10.01.2022 Tonight President Phillip Bowman addressed the council meeting of the Port Macquarie-Hastings Council in the School of Arts Building in Laurieton. The question asked was: How is progress going on Councils appraisal of the application to Heritage List the Camden Haven's WW1 memorial trees in Laurieton. The response was positive from the council and audience and it was indicated the the Society will receive a letter early next week. Phillip later spoke to Mayor Besseling and he gave verbal approval to apply to the NSW Heritage Branch to list the trees on the State Heritage Register once we got councils letter of support.

08.01.2022 Street name search: Members of the Camden Haven Historical Society are undertaking research to learn the origins of the street names in Laurieton. This is to prepare material for a new historical walk down our main street, Bold Street, to complement our existing historical walk in Laurie Street. On our new walk we would like to explain the history of the names of the streets we cross, beginning at Ocean Drive (rather self-explanatory) and proceeding south to cross Castle Stre...et, Tunis Street, Seymour Street, Laurie Street, Mill Street, Hanley Street and the historic Rodger and Austral Streets. We know that Laurie Street and Laurieton were named after Joseph Laurie, a founder of the village, and that Mill Street recognises one of the early timber mills in the village. Rodger Street is named after John Rodger who ran a general store and a sawmill in the early 1900s. Hanley Street is clearly linked to Hanleys Point, but we need more information about the Hanley family. In particular the present-day main street, Bold Street, is curious. Perhaps, as one member playfully suggested, it was merely a request by a clerk that the name be written in BOLD type? If any of your readers can enlighten us regarding Castle, Tunis, Seymour or Austral Streets, or any of the other street names in Laurieton, we would be grateful. Information can be sent to the museum. Alternatively if you are in the area, please visit us at the museum which is open 9.00 am to 1.00 pm, Tuesday to Saturday. We will be closed for the Xmas break from 22nd December 2019 to 1st January 2020. 08.01.2022 Our Rivers Our History online exhibition wins National Museum Award The innovative online exhibition Our Rivers Our History has won a 2016 Museums and Galleries National Award (MAGNA) for permanent exhibitions. Our Rivers Our History was a collaborative project, managed and led by Museums Australia - Mid North Coast Chapter, involving seven volunteer run museums on the lower Mid North Coast: Wingham Museum, Tinonee, Camden Haven Museum, Mid North Coast Maritime Museum, Po...rt Macquarie Museum, Wauchope Museum and Kempsey Museum. The enduring web exhibition and river trails were launched in April 2015 and continue to attract new audiences. The judge’s comments included: Outstanding project that linked core museum activities to cultural tourism priorities. The project helped to continue to preserve Australia’s valued past, skilled the community in benchmark museum practices and gave further rise to sense of community spirit in linking all the local areas and their museums. Great to see themes driven by objects and collections. The emphasis on significance has certainly worked well for this project and for the staff in the volunteer museums. The tourism network and benefits are obvious. The website and collateral are well designed and play to the strengths of each object. This is a good model for other regional networks and could easily be expanded to other collecting institutions and tourism attractions... The web exhibition uses local museum objects and collections to illustrate the history and stories of the Manning, Camden Haven, Hastings and Macleay Rivers, says Project Manager, Debbie Sommers. We are very pleased to see our collaborative efforts and the project’s outcomes recognised by our peers. The project involved 18 museum volunteers who contributed in excess of 3000 hours to create the ground breaking project. While traditionally going to a museum and viewing objects and displays was the way we most learnt about history with the technology of today it is no longer the only way, and this project brings local stories told by objects and museums to people anywhere and at any time. The Our Rivers Our History online exhibition and website showcases some of the most significant objects held in our museums relating to our rivers and coastal waters which are such an integral part of our history. Each has its own story but is also part of a larger story. It is hoped that such an insight obtained online will encourage people to then visit our museums and discover more of our stories. Our Rivers Our History can be viewed at http://www.oroh.com.au/. Under the working title ‘Waterways the project was awarded one of two Regional Museum Networking (RMN) Grants in late 2013, the first year of the grant program. The Regional Museum Networking Grant program was an Arts NSW devolved funding program, administered by Museums and Galleries NSW on behalf of the NSW Government.

A guided "Laurie Street Heritage Walk" is again on offer from the Camden Haven Historical Society during this year's Heritage Festival which runs from 14th April to 20th May 2018. Whether a local wanting to know more about your local history, a newcomer to the Camden Haven or just visiting on holidays, come along and reminisce the early pioneering days when Laurieton was getting established in the 1800's a...nd early 1900's. Join our guides as we stroll down the "Avenue of Honour" and contemplate the early days when you collected your supplies from the old Government Wharf !! The guided 'Walks' are for offer on Saturday, 21st April and Saturday, 28th. They will commence at 9am from the Laurieton Museum, School of Arts building, on the corner of Bold & Laurie Street. It takes about 1 to 2 hours. You need to be there 5-10 minutes before the "Walk' start time. We are asking for a contribution of $5/person - all proceeds will go to the museum which is run entirely by volunteers. 06.01.2022 Bad day for Camden Haven's Historic Buildings as the DA for the old Post Office site was approved unchanged apart from two minor changes to the conditions.
