25.01.2022 Great news. A fantastic choice for Rotary International President in 2022-2023.
25.01.2022 Last Thursday we were privileged to have an overseas guest speaker address our meeting. Julie Dockrill joined us via Zoom from Timaru New Zealand. It was somewhat timely as we had all just received an email from R. I. President Holger Knaack (Rotary Opens Opportunities) in which he had discussed how Rotary was adapting to the COVID crisis and mentioned the attraction of being able to have International guests. Julie obtained a postgraduate midwifery degree from Monash some 20... years ago. She is passionate about the benefits of Childbirth Education. This was graphically bought home to us by her well-presented talk on her experiences in assisting with the problems of maternal health, firstly in Mongolia and more recently in Nepal. In 2013 the Rotary club of Waimate NZ was able to divert funds from a proposed water project in Mongolia into a Maternal Health program when they learned this was of more pressing need. Infant mortality was 60 per 1000 live births and maternal mortality was 10 times that of countries like ours. Julie joined a group of 4 other midwifes in carrying out a series of courses for midwifes and health workers. They conducted 3-day childbirth education session and a 1-day emergency skills training. They had prepared a childbirth education manual which had been translated into Mongolian, this was so well received it was later taken up and distributed by the Mongolian Ministry of Health. The interactive and participatory method of learning was readily adopted. Over time they helped train some 500 midwifes and many more ancillary workers. The maternal morbidity/mortality has fallen by 50% and the infant mortality by 30%. More recently in Nepal when engaging with Health officials they were told that in spite of dedicated programs results had not changed in 10 years. Officials on learning of their success in Mongolia and Rotary support have welcomed their help. Julie and her team are to be congratulated and are certainly making a difference

08.01.2022 Vale - Grant Butterfield 20/8/1969 - 16/6/2020 After a three-year battle with cancer Grant passed early this morning. Grant is survived by his beautiful family,... wife Donna and their three kids Sam, Scarlett and Toby. Grant participated in the ring three times 2014, 2015 and 2016. Whilst fighting his own battle he missed 2017 and 2018, but in true Grant style continued to help behind the scenes whilst gravely ill to ensure the nights success. That was just part of his tenacious and philanthropic personality. 2019 saw him back in the ring emceeing rather than boxing where he entertained the crowd with his quick wit and humor. To all those who participated and supported the Corporate Clash, Grant held you in the highest esteem and was always most grateful and thankful. Grants well used sayings around the gym was one of Mike Tysons Everyone has a plan until you get punched in the face. Going from participant to patient definitely wasnt Grants plan but he fought hard and never gave up. Rest in peace Grant, you will be sorely missed.

03.01.2022 Our guest speaker for this coming Thursday night is Julie Dockrill coming to us via Zoom from Timaru N.Z. Julie will be discussing Maternal Child Health Projects Can They Make a Difference? Julie has been in health for over 35 years now, firstly as a registered nurse in a variety of settings and then after completing a post graduate degree in midwifery at Monash University as a midwife for over 20 years. Currently she is the manager of a small rural maternity unit at As...hburton. Julie has a real passion for antenatal education and has seen the benefits that if, and when it can be provided in an applicable workable manner will mean it has the ability to change lives. Julie will talk about her maternal health project in Mongolia, the aim of which was to equip Mongolian hospitals and rural staff with the skills to deliver effective evidence-based health programmes related to childbirth education. Here are the Zoom details for this online meeting. https://us02web.zoom.us/j/82216578954
