18.01.2022 We hear you. You might have heard something a little troubling or out of the ordinary lately. As the current situation continues to unravel with COVID-19 people are stressed, fearful and isolated. You might dismiss it as not your business. Or maybe its not that bad, its a once off.. surely, right..? Wrong. The Corona Virus is leaving many families feeling the strain. And we should all be very concerned about the DV risk some will face. But this isnt a family matter you sho...uld just turn away from. Is it easy to help? No, not always. Theres no exact rule book here but one thing we can say is that these situations leave friends of victims often feeling helpless. Packing up and leaving isnt always an option adopted straight away. Did you know that most Victims may stay or return to perpetrators repeatedly before they finally leave for good? It isnt black and white but its still upsetting to witness. So while the world feels uncertain, we want to be realistic. Validate her. Listen. Just be there, even if you feel frustrated for her and youre wondering why she just wont leave. Of course, you should speak up if you feel she or her children are in any imminent danger. Often compassion and validation is what she needs until shes ready to take the next steps. Encourage her to have a plan. Just be there for her, unconditionally. The ripple effect for women is extreme right now - with the passing of Hannah and her kids.. followed by coronavirus, huge financial strains that appeared overnight, lost jobs, home schooling kids, isolation with perpetrators.. it is a serious risk to women and children, those already suffering and potentially many more who may find themselves in uncharted territory at home. If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic or family violence contact 1800 RESPECT on 1800 737 732 for further advice and support. Dont go it alone. You can also reach out for help by contacting Lifeline on 13 11 14. Men who have anger, relationship or parenting issues, should contact the Mens Referral Service on 1300 766 491. 15.01.2022 * LAST DAY FOR EOFY TAX DEDUCTIONS! * The COVID-19 health crisis is having a devastating effect on all our lives. But for some people, the impact is being felt worst of all. Financial hardship, isolation, and domestic violence cases are all increasing at alarming levels. Did you know our professional Board operates completely pro bono? This means when you donate, youre not paying for administration - so every donation we receive, big or small, goes towards building and main...taining the Camden Womens Shelter. Our local area needs this. We need YOU! All donations are 100% tax-deductible and can be made via our PayPal giving fund, GiveNow or via direct deposit. Even if you cant donate - we would love to to share our post will help!

15.01.2022 Whose turn is it first!!

14.01.2022 Why didnt she just leave? Its a question that doesnt necessarily have a sinister intention. In a sense, its an attempt to distance ourselves from the possibility that it could ever be us who finds ourselves victim to intimate partner abuse. So we tell ourselves a convenient story: that people who are abused make mistakes. That they make bad choices. That something about their behaviour is what keeps them there. The scary reality is that this simply isnt true.

14.01.2022 Support your local shelter - and sweep aside traditional views about who does what chores at home. www.choresforacause.org.au Just in time for Spring Cleaning, this month, Womens Community Shelters are launching a new, innovative fund-raising campaign. A pioneering program building young peoples awareness of gender inequality and domestic violence and womens homelessness, Chores for a Cause empowers young people aged 8-18 to support the women and children in need in thei...r community by completing chores in exchange for money they can then donate to the shelter of their choice. WCS would be thrilled if kids could raise up to $25 for Blue Wren House - Camden Womens Shelter. Why not more? This isnt just about a few young people doing the heavy lifting and raising lots of money. This is an opportunity for everyone to feel they can pitch in and do their little bit too. Because solving domestic and family violence and homelessness needs everyone to care and contribute. WCS CEO, Annabelle Daniel OAM says; Domestic and family violence is a chronic and ongoing social problem that spikes during times of widespread disaster and stress. Charities are often the very first responders to the vulnerable, the isolated and the homeless who are at particular risk right now during this pandemic. We have seen significant numbers of potential fundraising events planned for WCS and our shelter network cancelled for the foreseeable future. Innovative, positive campaigns like this one have the potential to not only help our sector raise much-needed funds, but to provide a sense of hope. Our Education Officer, Dannielle Miller explains why this is not only brilliant for our shelters, but for the kids who roll up their sleeves and support the initiative too: This initiative offers a powerful opportunity to start some really important, age-appropriate conversations in our homes and schools around chore equity (what sort of chores do families need to do, and how often does each family member usually spend on these?), gender stereotyping (theres no such thing as girls work and boys work - we can all do all the things!) and respectful relationships (every member of a family should feel safe and respected). The research also clearly shows that meaningful fund-raising opportunities like this one are just what our young people need right now. During times of uncertainty, altruistic acts boost our morale, foster a sense of connection, and give us back a sense of control. Lets do this! www.choresforacause.org.au The Haven - Nepean Womens Shelter The Sanctuary - The Hills Womens Shelter Great Lakes Womens Shelter Northern Beaches Womens Shelter Parramatta Womens Shelter Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Womens Shelter Bayside Womens Shelter #choresforacause

13.01.2022 We are so thankful and proud of all the people we have behind the scenes working hard to pave the way for our future Shelter. With their own talents and skill, they guide us, lead us and most importantly champion us on every step of the way. One of those people is Annabelle. She captains not one but seven and counting Landspeeders right now (read the article and the reference will make sense!) Her unwavering support and the collective knowledge from Womens Community Shelters continues to really help our Board to flourish. https://amp-dailytelegraph-com-au.cdn.ampproject.org//ea17

12.01.2022 *TRIGGER WARNING* Our heart breaks at sadly, yet another estranged partner attack in SA ... probably the most difficult part to fathom is that "Neighbours say they heard screams for help throughout the night but, despite the cries, nobody called triple zero." 09.01.2022 Charmed and Dangerous: A Woman’s Guide to Reclaiming a Healthy Relationship, has been developed for women by women as a tool to break free of controlling, abusive or violent relationships and reclaim a healthy relationship. https://publications.legalaid.nsw.gov.au//Pu/Files/754.pdf We hope this sharing of information may assist you in your journey to achieving and maintaining a healthy relationship; a relationship based on trust, respect, positive communication, honesty and... balanced power. Domestic and Family violence is not just about the family; it is a social concern. As a result of inherent cultural and social beliefs millions of women globally from all socio-economic groups are abused and treated violently by men everyday. Family violence is not about a male partner being angry or losing it, it is a way for the abuser to have control over and dominate their partner and/or children.

08.01.2022 A key focus of the package will be women escaping violence. Funding will go towards the states 84 womens refuges, for additional staff, food vouchers or safe phones for victims. We look forward to the day our shelter provides relief for women and children in need!

06.01.2022 For those who watch (or can’t turn away from) MAFS, there’s sadly a lot you can learn from seeing how relationships differ at the dinners to behind closed doors. Emotional abuse is real and coercive control of your friends and people around you is easier to spot when you know the signs..

03.01.2022 From the point of view of a man, who suffered immensely growing up, watching his Mum trying to shelter him from the DV and eventually losing her own life in the process. DV isnt a new problem, but back in the 70s no level wanted to deal with it. At least some small part of that [Government funded] money should go to womens refuges which are in huge demand but lacking in supply. Without them there are often no other places women and children can run to when they need to fle...e. If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic or family violence contact 1800 RESPECT on 1800 737 732 for further advice and support. Dont go it alone.
