23.01.2022 Spots are still available for the upcoming webinar on the 24th of February! Like the previous session, this one will focus on Place Value and how you can use highly engaging activities to maximise your students' learning. Getting your head around mathematics is all about understanding how numbers work and understanding how numbers work is what place value is all about! The good news is that you can make teaching place value in your classrooms highly engaging, and with high ...engagement comes high retention. 23.01.2022 Sorry that it's been a while since the last update! The first 1/3 of 2019 has flown by and RVEC has been as busy as ever. Recently, Rob spent a few days working in Kilmore at St. Patrick's Primary School - you can read a brief article about the teachers' and students' experience with Rob from the North Central & Whittlesea Review! Like what you've read? Rob will hosting a new round of RVPD Watch & Learn days in late October/early November of this year, and will soon be open to taking bookings! The venue is yet to be determined, and will be announced in the coming months. Happy teaching!

22.01.2022 Online Workshop Webinars with Rob Vingerhoets and Michael Minas Getting 2021 Off to a Cracking Start! Many of us are more than relieved to see the end of the madness that was 2020, but 2021 still poses a number of challenges for teachers as we try and piece together what was missed throughout a very messy year. So how can you start off 2021 as effectively as possible? The team of Rob Vingerhoets and Michael Minas are once again running a number of online webinars to teacher...s across Australia and beyond, with the first few session focussing on how to kick off 2021 the best way you can - at least in terms of teaching maths! Apart from some very engaging and worthwhile activities (featuring targeted activities for Foundation students) suitable for the first term of the school year and in particular for the areas of place value, counting, data, and measurement, there will also be direct ideas and advice for: - setting up your classroom effectively for you and your students, - knowing how to optimise every opportunity that arises, - understanding how to 'nail' the language of maths from the outset, - getting your expectations for your students in maths just right, - and refining your philosophy for maths learning and teaching. This session will run for an hour and a half, with one hour devoted to engaging activities and a further thirty minutes dedicated to covering the points listed above, and will be held on the 3rd of February, so follow the link below to book in as soon as you can! https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/getting-2021-off-to-a-crack

18.01.2022 The Trench of Lost Momentum Rob Vingerhoets Here's a little insight into how I organise an effective, engaging lesson. This is a graph showing what an effective teaching lesson looks like versus an ineffective maths lesson. The red line shows a highly engaging and effective maths lesson with a high level of maintained momentum, while the grey line shows an inconsistent and mainly ineffective maths lesson, which starts with a high momentum that isn’t maintained and eventua...lly leads to what I like to call the Trench of Lost Momentum. 1) Don’t lose the momentum and goodwill engendered by an engaging and fun warm-up. 2) The introduction to the student activity should be brief and concise outline the task, state your expectation, and let the kids get on with it. 3) Too much teaching talk takes up invaluable kids’ doing time. 4) This is where you teach during the student activity, not the introduction. Let the kids get started and teach at your points of need. 5) The Trench of Lost Momentum. No one digs this trench for you you dig it for yourself by adopting a lecture-style teaching method that disengages and loses your kids, and loses your momentum! 6) Concise, doable, effective share/reflection task.

16.01.2022 The recent March RVPD days were a great success! One teacher emailed to say, "I attended the Foundation PD on the 16th March which I thoroughly enjoyed and got so much out of. Not only for maths activities but also your advice on building language, challenging children, making the most of opportunities presented, even if that is not the set topic, and keeping expectations high. I just wanted to let you know I have tried out a couple of the activities this week with great suc...cess. I was pleasantly surprised how well the children did particularly with a game you called 'Get Me To Ten' they were so engaged. I have been using the keywords chart, something I will work to get better at!" More RVPD days will be running in May, with the venue to be determined. Keep an eye out for more details!

15.01.2022 Our recent webinar on collecting and recording useful data for assessment - without disengaging your students - was a great success, and the Foundation-Year 2 session is filling up fast! Like the previous session, this webinar will look at some highly engaging tasks that can be used to gather the assessment data you need for upcoming reports, and how you can use it to get a good idea of where your students are at after a very different sort of school year. All tasks are uniquely targetted at Foundation to Year 2 students, and will be different from the ones covered in the Year 3 - 6 session. Spots are still available, so if you're interested in making the most of your assessments this term, don't miss it! https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/collecting-recording-making

15.01.2022 Missed out on the first two webinars or looking to improve your maths activities arsenal? Good news - there are more webinars on the way! The first two webinars focused on using games to help engage students in their maths learning and were great successes. The next two will focus on differentiation and how you can use open-ended activities to cater for every student in your class, all in one activity. The first of the differentiation webinars will be run on the 9th of Septe...mber and tickets are already selling, so book in before they’re all gone! https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/differentiation-with-engagi Feedback from the first two webinars has been incredibly positive, with teachers from all over Australia (and even some from across the world!) tuning in. I have no doubt these webinars will be highly beneficial for all participants, equipping teachers with activities and strategies they can use in their online classroom the very next day and in their physical classrooms post-lockdown. I hope to catch you online soon. Cheers!

13.01.2022 The second webinar in the Warm-Ups focus is taking place next week! Spots are still available, so if you're looking for some engaging, motivating, and interesting warm-up activities that you can use in your classroom the very next day, be sure to sign up for April 26th session for Years 3 to 6. More information below! Warm-ups. They almost sound innocuous, but they certainly aren't! In maths as in most teaching it is vital to get the lesson off to a great start. An effec...tive, engaging, and mathematically worthwhile warm-up establishes momentum right from the outset of the session. Warm-ups form an integral part of any lesson structure/instructional model, so we need to get them right. This means activities and games that require minimal preparation, yet are mathematically rich, regularly open-ended and engaging, so that your students start the lesson feeling keen and motivated. The upcoming webinar on April 26th will feature a range of warm-up activities for Year 3 to 6 students that do exactly that: ready your kids for maths in an enjoyable and engaging way! Book yourself a place soon before spots fill up: https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/easy-engaging-and-effective

13.01.2022 September has arrived, which means the next webinar for Love Maths Enterprises (run by myself and Michael Minas) isn't far away! We already have a heap of teachers booked in for the September 9 session, but there are still spots available for September 16. These two sessions will focus on using engaging open-ended activities to cater for the range of abilities in foundation to grade 6 classrooms. I reckon if you talk to enough teachers they’re likely to tell you the 2 biggest... challenges in teaching (apart from teaching remotely!) are: 1. the range of ability in any given classroom (usually a 4-year spread) 2. trying to behaviourally manage your grade. These two challenges are related. Disengaged students play up and students who find the work too hard play up. In addition, self-esteem issues are always there when students see they are doing different (usually easier) work to other students. Open-ended tasks directly address these 2 issues. Students thrive in open-ended situations. They’re all doing the same task, just coming to that task with different skills and ability levels - BUT they’re all doing the same task. No need for 3 tasks for three (or more) different ability groups. One task, all students. Winner, winner! Michael and myself will take you through a range of open-ended tasks for Foundation to Year 2 students on September 9, and for Year 3- 6 students on September 16, and explain how to set up the tasks for engagement and success. If you're interested, book yourself a ticket using this link! https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/differentiation-with-engagi

11.01.2022 Term 4 has arrived and with it a whole new range of challenges for classroom teachers not to mention all the added difficulties of post-lockdown teaching for Victorians! After nearly an entire term of remote learning, how can you implement an assessment that gives you the data you need for reporting and to keep the admins happy, without disengaging or overwhelming your students? How can you get a good idea of where each of your students are, at the end of a year as bizarre ...as 2020? These next two webinars are designed to help you answer those questions. Rob and Michael will be covering a range of highly engaging, mathematically rich classroom tasks that provide the assessment information you need, all catered to the session’s specific grade levels. The webinars will also explore how to collect, record, and use the data from these tasks to make the most out of it for your reports and for figuring out where your students are at in terms of skill and knowledge. The webinars will be run on the 12th of October for Years 3 6, and the 26th of October for Foundation Year 2, at the usual time of 4pm to 5pm. Spots are expected to fill fast, so book yourself a place via the link! https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/collecting-recording-making

10.01.2022 The next round of RVPD days is open for booking - and this time the days follow a brand new format! While the upcoming November days will follow the boutique pd model they are different in as much as they are specifically targeted to setting up your classroom teachers and numeracy leaders for 2019 in terms of effective planning for maths and for getting term 1 off to a highly worthwhile start for content and lesson structure (with a focus on warm-up activities, place value ...and the 4 operations). More details and booking forms are available on our website: http://robvingerhoets.com.au/maths/rvpd/ Seats are expected to fill quickly, so be sure to get your form in!

10.01.2022 The very first webinar from the combined team of Rob Vingerhoets and Michael Minas hits the online stage tomorrow at 4! If you missed out on a ticket this time around, our second session will run on August 18th, this time with a focus on games and activities for year 3-6 classrooms. You can book yourself in through Eventbrite using the link here: https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/using-games-to-develop-flue... While remote learning is keeping us safe, it’s not always easy, and keeping maths lessons fun and engaging for students can be challenging enough in a face-to-face environment. That’s why I’ve decided to work together with Michael Minas to run a series of webinars over the next few weeks. I have no doubt these webinars will be highly beneficial for all participants, equipping teachers with games and strategies they can use in their online classroom the very next day and in their physical classrooms post-lockdown. Hope to 'see' you either tomorrow or next week - don't miss it!

01.01.2022 Well, 2020 hasn't quite gone as we'd planned, but all isn't lost! There's a way to give your students the best chance at keeping on top of and engaged with their learning, even while they're at home. While schools were out of action, I sat down and put together a series of maths activity packs to help you help your teachers to help your students. There are four packs targeted at four different teaching levels (Foundation, Years 1 & 2, Years 3 & 4, and Years 5 & 6) covering nu...mbers, probability and statistics, measurement, geometry, and more, with all tasks suitable for students self-isolating or quarantined at home! If you're interested, here's a flyer with all the details you need to know, or you can get in touch with me at [email protected] or 0408 350 048 to have a chat about what will work best for you and your school. These are strange times we're living in, but it doesn't have to be the end of maths as we know it! http://robvingerhoets.com.au//Maths-At-Home-bulk-email-fly
