25.01.2022 Happier days in Myanmar. This photo was taken during one of the the first years Cameras for Asia went to Myanmar perhaps in 2010 or 2011. This centre is also where this program was birthed. These kids have all long since graduated and moved on with their lives, part of the community now under the recently established military dictatorship. A coup took place here on February 1. As a result, schools and children’s centres like this one are now closed due to a protest movement known as CDM (civil disobedience). I was told last week that schools are now closed indefinitely and children are returning to their villages where it may be safer. Contact me if you’d like to learn more or help in some way. . . . #savemyanmar #camerasforasiamyanmar #camerasforasia #myanmarlivesmatter #myanmar #kidswithcameras #kidsphotography

24.01.2022 If you’re new to this account, here’s a brief synopsis. In a normal year, Cameras for Asia visits up to three countries teaching photography and leaving behind donated digital cameras. The workshops are fun, furious and there’s a lot of laughter and learning as in this picture! The program has been running over 10 years. Most cameras are from Brisbane, but also other parts of Australia. The sale of honey , beeswax and other bee products fund this program so you will see a ...variety of images here as a result including bees . The funds raised are still heading overseas to centres still open with children/needs. The canvas of their life has changed a lot to. Hopefully next year is different! I will continue to share photos of and by the kids, of the bees and any new developments. Camera products are always welcome and please come and get some honey! PM for details but I am in Auchenflower. . . . #camerasforasia #kidswithcameras #kidsphotography #childrensphotography #childrensphoto #myanmarkids #myanmar See more

23.01.2022 A PRACTICAL WAY TO HELP IN MYANMAR: Andrew is connected to two of the places Cameras for Asia teaches in Myanmar. His friends are my friends. If you want to assist in any way, bank details are in his post, or contact me for details.

23.01.2022 COVID UPDATE NEPAL: Children in Nepal are not yet back at school since schools shut earlier in the year, particularly if there is no online learning option. Concerning reports from friends in Nepal and online give some idea of the long term ramifications of this.

23.01.2022 Holidays are over! The girls haven’t given me much work since February (an unusually long break) but have decided the off season is over. Frames in all the hives are ready for extraction! That means honey! About time too as it has been the first time in years my stocks were down to the last 100 jars. And yes, need glasses now to see the eggs Please remember honey sale money is still going overseas even though my program is not running this year. By year end, more donations will be sent, particularly to India. Keep supporting them. Thanks! . . . #camerasforasiabees #camerasforasiahoney #honeybees #brisbanebees #urbanbeekeeping #ilovebees

22.01.2022 This is a school in north India where I have held classes. What a fabulous lesson idea!

21.01.2022 UPDATE FROM NEPAL: "Six months down the line, some experts say the lockdown was started too early and without a strategy for testing, tracing and quarantine. Indeed, the fact that after lying dormant for the first three months, the number of confirmed cases and fatalities have zoomed up."

21.01.2022 CORONAVIRUS UPDATE: Here's a quick summary of where Cameras for Asia's contacts are with Covid-19. Fiji has reported only 31 cases and is probably the first place Cameras for Asia can return once quarantine and travel rules change for Australians. Myanmar has done okay (although numbers may not be accurate), but there have been some larger increases in recent days to 1,709. Nepal (48,138) and India (almost 4.4 million) continue to struggle with mismanagement, population and m...any other factors contributing to the situation. Of all these places I have contact with, Indian centres continue to struggle the most. Please remember, Cameras for Asia honey and other products support these communities. As no trips are currently possible, I will send what comes in via these sales through donations before the end of the year. So, if you need honey, please come and get it. The girls are starting to produce again after a very long winter. I will also start preparing some products for Christmas gifts and details will follow in the next month. A calendar will also come out again this year. Thanks for your interest and support. See more

19.01.2022 Remember Myanmar ... one of my all-time favourite images by Esther, one of the gorgeous AYDC kids where I teach in Yangon. This image was used in an exhibition hosted by Myanmar Deitta featuring images the children took. It was called Yangon, Through the Lens of Children and had images from all over Yangon they had taken in tourist attractions, transport, markets and more. A military coup recently seized power here and as teachers are not working in protest, children are again out of school. . . . #myanmar #camerasforasiamyanmar #exhibition #photographyexhibition

18.01.2022 MYANMAR UPDATE: "The leaders of the United States, India, Australia and Japan, meanwhile, declared they would work together to restore democracy in Myanmar following a meeting of the so-called Quad alliance."

17.01.2022 UPDATE FROM MYANMAR: "Myanmar’s largest city, Yangon, has rapidly built new quarantine centres as it scrambles to contain the commercial hub’s first significant coronavirus outbreak, with overworked medical staff fearing thousands more cases to come."

17.01.2022 Ever wanted to see a bee’s tongue? Well, look closely and you’ll see how it extends into the centre of the flower for the bee to lap up the nectar ! Bees fold the tongue into their body so you don’t see it when they’re flying around or doing other tasks. They do clean their tongues as well which is quite a sight. Imagine if we had to clean our tongues? The bloodwoods are going mad around Brisbane which is great for bees! . . . #bees #beetongue #honeybees #ilovebees #beekeeperlife #beekeepers #brisbanebees #urbanbeekeeping #brisbanebeeping #camerasforasiabees

16.01.2022 Flashback to Orissa! some days I really miss running the program and Instagram helpfully informed me this place is 10,000km away. I remember many cheerful faces, little lives developing, skills burgeoning and the fun of a photographic adventure. These dear ones in India are safe but only stay on their compound, although some of these kids have since graduated and could be in larger towns or villages now. Miss them Spare a thought as Indian cases surpass six million! Jai Hind. . . . #india #camerasforasiaindia #camerasforasia #kidswithcameras #kidsphotography #indiankids #indianchildren #indialove

16.01.2022 Spring is here! These bees were having a gluttonous turn-of-season feast on this apple blossom on the Granite Belt this week. . . . The leptospermum have budded and some have even flowered in my garden, so it’s finally back on for my girls in Brisbane. On a sad note, one of my hives didn’t make it through the winter. They aren’t dead - they left. Too much space for a small colony. They were in a nuc (small box) but bees don’t do well in large spaces. It was a nuc create...d from a hive wth two queens late last season. They were going gangbusters so the nuc seemed an okay idea, but about two weeks later the season ended suddenly and early in February. It was obviously too late by then and they struggled all winter. They had plenty of honey, just too much space to warm with very few bees. It was a tricky call on their last inspection as I knew they needed help but didn’t want to compromise my other hives. I decided to leave them and hope they’d get through the next weeks until it warmed up but they clearly made their decision while I was out on the Granite Belt. I probably should have closed off half the space but you make a call and you have to live with it. I wish them well. . . . #beekeeping #brisbanebees #camerasforasiabees #springtime #appleblossom #granitebelt #visitstanthorpe #urbanbeekeeping See more

16.01.2022 HONEY SALES: Healthy visitors are welcome to buy honey direct from 15 Eagle Terrace, Auchenflower. Honey contains anti-bacterial and immune boosting properties so it's a particularly good dietary option at this time. All the honey was bottled before the pandemic and we are healthy, but it's easy to wipe down the jars first. Here are a few ways to make your visit easier, if you have concerns: 1. PM or text (ph. 0415 166 967) your order. 500g ($7.50), 700g ($10.50), 1kg jars/tu...bs ($15). However, walk-ins are fine. 2. Pay by bank transfer or cash (there should be no issue with giving change now with low incidence of COVID-19 in Queensland, but if you are concerned bring the right amount). 3. Honey paid for by bank transfer will be left on my steps with your name on for pickup anytime. Thanks everyone! Pure beeswax, lip balms and body butter are also available.

15.01.2022 Today, I've shared some of the troubling updates from countries that Cameras for Asia visits from India to Nepal and Myanmar. Instead, here's something positive: Ugandan kids dancing to "Jerusalema" a gospel-influenced house song that has inspired dancing around the world. Enjoy and feel your spirits lifted!

15.01.2022 Finally got into the brood box of all the hives post winter, now temperatures are consistently warm. They are doing well. Nowhere near as rapid a development as I have experienced in many other Spring seasons, but I am hopeful to extract honey in the next month - the first since February. It has never been that long between production and the girls have done well to soldier through the winter with their supplies. Honey and bee products will be expensive this year but please buy local and support ethical brands or your local beekeeper. . . . #beekeeping #brisbanebees #beevideo #camerasforasiabees #urbanbeekeeping

15.01.2022 Spring is in the air. Bees having a field day on lavender in the Scenic Rim, Queensland. . . . Did my first pre spring inspection today and I am calling time on winter. Enough! The girls need a break. I was really lucky not to lose two hives this winter. It’s been a miserable winter for all the colonies bar one (and much of summer too). Time to end all pandemics and enjoy the abundance of Spring. New life, growth, community and bounty. ... . . . #queenslandbeekeeping #brisbanebees #honeybees #lavender #camerasforasia #beekeeping #beesinlavender #ilovebees See more

14.01.2022 "In a way it's given them a licence to dream." How great is this?

14.01.2022 "So how do these insects make honey, you ask? You’ll find the task is one requiring teamwork and organisation."

13.01.2022 THANK YOU: A huge thanks to Graham Stevens in WA for his recent and very generous donation to the Cameras for Asia program. This will be very helpful as I continue to donate funds to the centres I visit that have increased need due to COVID-19, despite being physically unable to visit them this year. It's good to point out that not all have been economically affected. While they have ongoing needs, some are actually better off this year in strange ways. But some places also really aren't doing well, particularly in India. So, if you are buying honey or other products, do note money is still getting where it needs to. Thanks for your support!

13.01.2022 INDIA UPDATE: "The number of recorded COVID-19 infections in India has reached six million cases, as the country edges closer to overtaking the United States as the nation worst hit by the pandemic."

13.01.2022 Italy calling! So wonderful to receive this donation yesterday from Italy from Alessandro Corsetti. Not only does it encourage me that life is continuing beyond our bubble of relative normality in Australia, but gives me hope that one day, soon I hope, I will be back teaching and using this. Thanks Ale!

09.01.2022 "Noosa Shire Council has backflipped on banning new beehives in the suburbs in response to an outpouring of opposition from beekeepers and the public."

09.01.2022 UPDATE FROM NEPAL: One of the gorgeous girls I met through MDF that had been studying in Thailand had finally got home to Nepal. Quite an ordeal but thankfully she’s now home.

05.01.2022 "Also, experts say, India's relatively low fatality rate doesn't tell the whole story, and some believe that there is substantial undercounting in several states."

05.01.2022 Classes with Cameras for Asia look increasingly on hold due to Covid-19, but I have been playing with some gear the kids might like next time. Lens ball seems a good option for the teenage kids. Anyone used these much with kids? I had fun so figured they would too . . . #camerasforasia #kidsphotographyideas #lensball #lakeweyba #reflections #visitnoosa #camerasforasiaaustralia #visitsunshinecoast

04.01.2022 "Sunshine Coast Beekeepers Inc secretary Bill Spencer said he was extremely concerned and would lobby to have the new bylaw overturned. "It is absolutely short-sighted and unnecessary," he said. "There is absolutely no need to put an exclusion on native bees for a start, and we believe that European honeybees, handled responsibly and correctly which all our members do, don't pose a problem to the public in any way."

01.01.2022 Early signs of Spring seen at Mt Coot-Tha today in Brisbane. Here’s hoping for the girls (bees ) for a swift change in seasons. Their products (honey and wax) fund the Cameras for Asia program and they haven’t had a great winter, which followed hot on a poor season last year. Pre Spring inspections to happen as soon as the rain stops and temperatures rise a little. Need sun and warmth to get into the boos box. I’m actually really looking forward to the season even though it can be an exhausting amount of work at times. Stay tuned. . . . #springiscoming #spring #mtcoottha #australianativeplants #bees #urbanbeekeeping #brisbanebeekeeping #brisbanebees #ilovebees #camerasforasiabees @ Mount Coot-Tha
