25.01.2022 Well the table is back in it's usual state of disarray. Two 1 pce 14ft blackfish rods on the go. Four repairs on the far side of the table and half a dozen other repairs sitting against the back wall. I like the fact I'm busy, I just hope the wife doesn't leave me. I think she is getting tired of walking the long way around the kitchen. I'll be sorry to see her leave if she does. Cheers

25.01.2022 Good evening everyone. I thought I would put up a picture of how a break is repaired in a rod blank. As you can see I have glued a spiggot into one section of the blank and also made up a ferrule for the other side of the blank. Next the spiggoted section gets glued to the other side of the rod. Then we glue a ferrule over the join to help strengthen it. Unfortunately it is a bit lumpy but the break really needs the extra support. So there you go. Now hopefully my FB page is working properly again, so here goes.

25.01.2022 Hi all, the rebuild is coming along. I am using the same guides that were on the rod originally as there was nothing wrong with them. I have however removed all the old decorative binding and binding on the guides. Removed the old white tape and spiral bound cotton and given it a fresher cleaner look. Still have a couple of guides to go then a couple of coats of epoxy and it will be just like new. Tight lines all. ,

24.01.2022 Hi all, Xmas at my place today with a shipment of Fiji hardware and another Samurai blank for a customer.

24.01.2022 Hi all I just delivered this short stroker to its owner over at H2O Marine in Fyshwick. He was really happy with the rod and insisted on the photo. It's a pity you can't see it in real life it looks spectacular out in the daylight. Now just 2 more rods to finish before the hospital trip and I will be done for a couple of weeks. I have just been informed I am now going in on Thursday arvo so I will be available for a couple of quick repairs between now and then if necessary. Tight lines all.

24.01.2022 Hi everyone, earlier today I had a customer ask if I could do something a little different for him. Basically what he wants is some heat shrink on the butt section of his new fishing rod. Then put a bind on reel seat on top of that. But he wanted to know if I could shape the ends of the shrink wrap a little to give it a rise on both ends of the plate seat. I am reasonably happy with the result except for the fact that I need to make the swells under the heat shrink a little larger. It was a nice way to spend a bit of time this afternoon experimenting with this concept. When I build the real thing I will put up some photos of the finished product. Cheers

23.01.2022 Hi, I just thought I would put up a couple of photos of a rod that I am rebuilding for a customer as the bindings are disintegrating. If you look at the binding can you guess the colour. Then look at it when I have stripped it off the rod. My wife tells me it is purple, but I don't know. Notice how the manufacturer took the cheap and easy way out with the white parts, white paint instead of cotton. Anyway I quite like bringing these old rods things back to life and doing it properly. Gives me a nice warm fuzzy feeling. Cheers

22.01.2022 Leanne came over this arvo to pick up her prize for winning the latest competition. So now I can put up a photo of the finished pattern to you can all see it. Thanks for the couple of bottles of red Leanne and Chloe, much appreciated. Cheers

22.01.2022 Ok, it's official, I now have a business. I would like to thank all of those people who have been supporting me and bringing me their work to do. Without you this would not have happened. I will continue to do both repairs and builds. If any of you have any speclal requests for rods I will try to accommodate you to the best of my ability, assuming parts are available. When I get them finished I will put up a couple of photos for some slightly differently designed Blackfish Rods for Josh. Finally a massive thanks to Julz for letting me post to his page frequently, I couldn't have gotten here without you buddy. Tight Lines All.

22.01.2022 Five rods on the bench for the one customer. Got the two 1 piece 14 footers completed and going out today. Now for the other three 12 foot rods. Fun fun fun

21.01.2022 This is just a test to see if I can still share a post on this new version of FB. Sorry for the repeat photo, but as I said it is just a test. Tight lines all.

20.01.2022 Well in the lull in the storm with repairs and builds, I have finally managed to spend a bit of time on a project I have had going for myself for a while. Can't go any further with four builds as the wholesalers are out of stock. So here is my project. It is going to be a killer trout, bream, flathead rod It is a 7ft 1 pce Rainshadow blank that I extended 12 inches to make it 8ft. The blank is rated at 2-4 kilos, this thing is a weapon. Can't wait to get to use it. Tight lines all.

20.01.2022 Now that I can take my eyes of the computer after having watched the US elections way to much I thought I would put up a couple of photos. Recently I have been doing of a lot of builds, Fly Rods, Luderick Rods, Short Strokers etc. This interspersed with repairs. But today something a little different turned up at my place. An old 3 piece rod that appears to have been made out of solid pieces of bamboo and turned into a spin rod. Something of a family heirloom the owner wants restored. I am happy to do the job but glad he is prepared to wait. I could be a while. Cheers All

20.01.2022 Hi all, well I have done it again and broken the bank account. I have just ordered from America a range of carbon fibre grips. They range for grips for spinning, casting and through to fly rods. There are two distinct advantages with these types of grips. (1) they are substantially lighter than either cork or foam and (2) they amplify vibration which means you get much better bite detection. They also look really cool.... As my budget is limited in what I can carry I am only stocking limited numbers of these grips. These grips are a real game changer particularly with finicky fish. So keep them in mind if you are thinking of getting a special rod built.

20.01.2022 Next Tuesday I am in Canberra Hospital, unless plans change, for about a week for my third lot of open heart surgery. I am kinda used to these surgeries now and somewhat blase about the whole thing. This means that as of next week I won't be posting for a little while, at least till I get back on my feet. I will still be able to do repairs and builds while I recuperate as I reckon they are good therapy and will keep me occupied. Just don't be in a hurry. Cheers all, and as always Tight Lines.

19.01.2022 Evening everyone, well after the excitement of picking up the Poly Boat yesterday it was back into building rods again today. I have just finished fitting and assembling the grips and reel seat for the butt section of another Samurai Blank. The blank is a 9ft 6in, 2 piece 12-20lb stick, and light as a feather. I must say I am in love with this rod, I think the owner is going to have a hard time persuading me to give it to him when it is finally finished. G'night All.

19.01.2022 The other day a broken butt section of a heavy rod came in for repair. They only way to fix it properly was to manufacture and internal spiggot for the break and then cover the join with a ferrule to add extra strength. I made a double thickness spiggot up for the internal section, manufactured and glued the ferrule in place and then covered the whole lot with some black shrink wrap to make it look a little better than just covering it with black cotton and epoxy. I hope the join holds up for the customer, but obviously can't guarantee it because the blank has been broken. But it should be ok now. It helps getting old broken rods of people when doin this type of repair that way I have the bits of blank I need to make these repairs. Thanks to all who donate.

19.01.2022 A little while ago I came across this 12ft 2pce Silstar surf rod on Gumtree. It was going cheap $30.00 so I bought it. The blank is in perfect condition but the rest of the rod needs work. So sometime in the next few weeks it is going to get a total rebuild. Take of the perished butt cap, take off the horrible front and rear grips, remove the reel seat and strip off the guides and tip. Replace the guides with a set of the new Fuji Fazlite guides, put on new butt cap. A new re...el seat will be going back on, but much further up the blank, and dress the whole thing with black shrink wrap. One extreme makeover coming up for this old girl. Thank God I don't charge myself for my time, but hey that is a thought. Will put up photos when finished. Cheers

17.01.2022 Rebuild finished and epoxyed. Quite a difference. Anyway good night all.

17.01.2022 Hi all, I haven't been on for a few days but I have been busy with repairs and builds, very busy. However, I am now catching up again so all is good. In builds I like to use some fairly hi-tech components and I suspect that some of use think I use hi-tech to build with, but it is not so. Below is my hi-tech cotton tensioner (home built) that I much prefer to using that the lathe that I have sitting on the bench. The lathe does get used but mainly for sitting a rod in to dry e...poxy on. My new grips should be arriving from the USA next week late so I will put up photos of them when they arrive. Talk about hi-tech, they are. I will build up a light spin stick when they arrive and you is welcome to come around and have a look and feel of it if you like. Cheers

17.01.2022 Renovation done. Left as original as possible. Sorry I can't do any more repairs of builds for a few weeks now as I will be out of action due to upcoming surgery on Friday morning. As always Tight Lines

14.01.2022 Hi all, I have just finished binding up this 9ft 6 Samurai surf rod for a customer. Now to start epoxying it tomorrow. I can't wait to see how it turns out. While the coats of epoxy are drying I need to strip and rebuild another surf rod for someone, so I still have a bit on. Just waiting on a couple of bind on reel seats for someone else and a fly rod blank to come in front Scotland for another build. So I am busy, busy, busy. If you needs repairs, rebuilds or full builds done in time for summer please get in sooner rather than later. Cheers

11.01.2022 Hi all, I saw a 12ft Silstar Surf Rod a little while ago going for a reasonable price second hand, so I bought it. I have the identical rod at home only it is the 10ft 6in version, so Silstar had taken 18 inches out of the butt, but in all other respects ideantical. The rod I bought was not in good condition, the butt cap, reel seat and grips and guides were all rubbish. The paintwork was also bad so I stripped it back to a bare blank. It now has been given several coats of camo paint and I am about to start rebuilding. Will show you when it is finished. I have left it at 12 foot as the person that is going to be the recipient of this masterpiece is somewhat bigger and taller than I am so it will fit him nicely. Tight lines.

11.01.2022 Well, I gave up on the tinny and decided to get a Poly Boat. The one I bought is 3.1m and will carry 500kg. It will still float when full of water and carrying two people These things are virtually unsinkable, and super stable, a lot more so than a tinny. I love the centre compartment where I can put marine ply on it and turn it into a seat, I I can unscrew the plug in the bottom and let water in. The water rises to the water line and forms a live bait tank, pretty nifty. Gotta say I am chuffed with it. Will be buying an outboard when I find one at 5hp or less as I don't want to have to register it. Mainly will be used in rivers, lakes and estuaries around the oyster leases. What do you lot think of my new toy?

11.01.2022 My kitchen table's second use, fishing rod repairs

10.01.2022 I decided to take the day off from Canberra Fishing Rod Repairs today. So what can I do on my day off, Cod season is closed for 3 months. I know lets strip the Silstar 12ft surf rod I got cheap a month ago so that I can get on with the rebuild. So step 1 strip rod done. Now wait for the new paint to turn up. So much for the day off.

04.01.2022 Good evening everyone, a couple of hours ago I had this repair arrive at home. The person who delivered it was not the actual customer and wasn't sure how it became broken. I said I could repair it, but it would need an internal spiggott and an outside sleeve, and that was agreed on via phone to the owner. If you look very closely at the blank you will notice a number of marks in the epoxy on the guide and also what appear to be some paint marks on the side of the blank. As t...he rod is not suffering from a crush break, and I would guess it is not a high stick break I am beginning to think the blank suffered from some sort of impact damage. Either by falling against something or having something hit it at some stage. The owner may not have noticed the damage to the blank and went to use it and bang, there you have it. The point I am making is this, pure graphite blanks are incredibly strong, however if they suffer some sort of damage they can be very fragile. So for some applications I may not recommend a straight graphite blank, but rather a composite mix of graphite and glass as they tend to be a bit more durable. Downside is they are a little heavier. Anyway Tight Lines All.I

03.01.2022 Hi all, well this is my last post for a little while. I would like to thank all those people who have supported and encouraged me in Canberra Rod Repairs and Custom Rod Building. I saw this post below a little while ago and thought it applicable to craftsmen and women everywhere. It is a longer post than I usually put up but well worth the read. I will start posting again when I am out of hospital and will start working on rods again when I am physically able, so don't worry ...I am not going anywhere anytime soon. This post is about woodworking but 110% applicable to rod building A customer asked me how much it cost to make a table.... I answered him: $ 1500 He said: So expensive for this job? I asked: How much do you think it would cost you? He answers me: $ 800 maximum... That's a pretty simple job right? !" - For $ 800 I invite you to do it yourself. - But.... I don't know how to. - For $800 I'll teach you how to. So besides saving you $700, you'll get the knowledge for the next time you want - It seemed right to him and he agreed. - But to get started: you need tools: A table saw, a planer, a top, dormants, etc... - But I don't have all these equipment and I can't buy all of these for one job. - Well then for another $250 more I'll rent my stuff to you so you can do it. - Okay, he says. - Okay! Tuesday I'm waiting for you to start doing this work - But I can't on Tuesday I only have time today. - I'm sorry, but I'm only available Tuesday to teach you and lend you my stuff. Other days are busy with other customers. - Okay! That means I'm going to have to sacrifice my Tuesday, give up my tasks. - I forgot. To do your job yourself, you also have to pay for the nonproductive factors. - That is? What is this?" - Bureaucratic, tax, vat, security, insurance, fuel etc. - Oh no!... But to accomplish these tasks, I'm going to spend more money and waste a lot of time! - Do you have them? You can do it to me before?" - Okay! - I'll make you all the material you need. Truck loading is done Monday evening or Tuesday morning you'll have to come by 6 loading the truck. Don't forget to be on time to avoid traffic jams and be on time - At 6??? Nope! Too early for me! I used to getting up later. ... - You know, I've been thinking. Y ' all better get the job done. I'd rather pay you the $1500. If I had to, it wouldn't be perfect and it would cost me a lot more. When you pay for a job, especially handcrafted, you pay not only for the material used, but also: - Knowledge - Experience - Study - Tools - Services - Time to go - punctuality - Accountability - Professionalism - Accuracy - Guaranteed - Patents - Sacrifices - Safety and security - Payment of tax obligations No one can denigrate other people's work by judging prices. Only by knowing all the elements necessary for the production of a certain work can you estimate the actual cost. I did not write this dialogue, but am sharing it to support craftsmen and women everywhere. Tight Lines All.

03.01.2022 Something a bit different. I am selling my float tube if anyone is interested. Cost $460 new now only $290. I have partially inflated it to show you what it looks like. Comes with flippers, pump and carry bag. Only used a couple of times and in excellent condition. No longer needed as I have bought a poly boat. Cheers

03.01.2022 Good evening all, I am sorry I haven't been posting much in the last few days, but I have been very busy with repairs and builds. Today a customer came in with a couple of repairs, something a bit different for a change rather than just replacing a guide or a tip. The guy had a short stroker with the tip broken off right at the base of the roller guide. And the second rod had the butt broken between the two rear grips. I had to manufacture a new butt section for the second rod and also include a gimbal. I will put up a photo of the finished repair tomorrow. As it is this is what I had to work with. Good night all, and tight lines.

02.01.2022 Good evening everyone, I thought I would put up a sequence of photos to show you how a pattern builds up. This is the pattern I have put on Leanne Master's rod, the winner of the last competition. When it is covered with a coat of epoxy it will look a lot different. I will put up a photo of that for a comparison for you. Have a great night all.

02.01.2022 Hi all, the photo today shows the repaired butt section of one of the rods below. The short stroker had the tip snapped off at the base of the pipe tip. This meant that I had to drill the pipe tip out, remove the first roller guide and reposition it and then rebind and epoxy. I reckon it turned out pretty well. The only thing is that the rod is now about 2cm shorter because of what was left iin the pipe tip originally is now gone. Anyway that's all for today. Tight lines all.

02.01.2022 Well it felt like Christmas at my place today. An order for a few fishing rod components I placed with a wholesaler in America, on Monday last week, turned up today. Talk about service. I ordered a couple of fly rod blanks, some upmarket Winn grips for them as well as some nice machined aluminium reel seats. I also ordered some of the range of Winn grips for spinning rods. I love delivery days. Cheers

01.01.2022 Christmas arrived early today. The new range of carbon fibre grips I had been expecting arrived. I pulled one of the longer ones out of the plastic bag to give you a better look at it. The benefit of these grips to the angler is far better bite detection through the grip to your hand. Also they weigh less than traditional grips and I have to say it they look really sexy. Tight lines all.

01.01.2022 Hi all, I am in the process of building a detachable bent butt short stroker for a customer (deep drop rod) if you like that term. So I thought I would put up a quick picture of the binding. The first photo shows the underbind, pinning and single overbind. The second photo if you look carefully, shows a double overbind on the guide. Normally you would not see a double or a triple overbind because the epoxy on the binding hides it, so I thought I would put this up to show you. Tight lines all.

01.01.2022 Just started another rod for a customer today. This one is a little different to the ones I have been doing recently which have been 12-14ft 1pce Blackfish and Drummer rods. This little guy is being built on a Samurai Premium blank and is going to be a 2pce 7ft 1-2 kilo stick. It is running split grips and a full set of silicon carbide guides. Talk about going from one extreme to the other, but it does make life interesting. Tight lines all.
