10.01.2022 Have you taken up running now that the gyms are closed? Don't let shin splints hold you back from exercising. Read some info from one of our previous #physiotiptuesday posts and if you feel like you may be developing shin splints or you have any other niggles use our online system to book in you see your physio or give us a call on 02 6162 0999. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------... SHIN SPLINTS What is it? Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome (MTSS) commonly termed as ‘shin splints’, is a continued amount of local bone breakdown and remodeling which is directly related to training load and recovery. A person normally feels pain on the inside of the shinbone (tibia) and accounts for up to 18% of all running injuries, which can halt training unless addressed promptly. It is important to identify and treat this injury as soon as possible, to stop this injury from progressing and get you on your way back to full training sooner. What does it feel like? MTSS may initially feel like mild soreness along your shinbone which increases towards the end of a run session. If left untreated may become more intense, with earlier onset during running or training. Your symptoms may worsen to the point you experience pain with daily activities and rest, and it may be painful to touch anywhere on your shin. What causes it? Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome (MTSS) is caused by a progressive stress overload of the tibia beyond the healing capacity of the bone, leading to progressive tissue breakdown and local weakening. If this is not addressed immediately, this increased stress will eventually lead to a hairline fracture known as a stress fracture. The main factors for developing MTSS include: Too much too soon a rapid increase in training volume and intensity without appropriate recovery and healing time for the bone to adapt Change in footwear or running surface increase loading on the bone when switching from trails or grass to bitumen Biomechanical factors decreased calf muscle strength and size, or sub-optimal running technique, can place more load and bending force on the tibia Metabolic and hormonal factors low bone mineral density and altered hormonal profiles can weaken bones, leading to increased risk of fracture https://bookings.nookal.com/bookings/location/252UJ
