23.01.2022 Have you ever wondered what the life as a paralegal at Canberra Community Law entails? We asked Robert, our CCL paralegal. Working at CCL as a paralegal is a pretty unusual job anything could come up! In my role, I work across two of the teams. On Mondays and Tuesdays, I work with Naomi (CCL’s Senior Litigation Solicitor) to assist clients with social security or housing matters. The sort of work involved ranges from day to day, but includes things like file notes, rese...arching legal issues and writing up applications or submissions. It can also change very suddenly, like when an urgent eviction comes up and we need to respond. Then from Wednesday to Friday, I work as part of the Street Law team. Street Law helps out clients at risk of or experiencing homelessness with a range of different issues. This means I could one day be calling a client to help them with fines and the next day be talking to the Passports Office about identity documents. Either way, it means that every new task is a new challenge for me to try. Sometimes, the work can be difficult because there are complex legal issues involved, while at other times, the challenges our clients face can be quite confronting. However, even on the harder days, CCL has an amazing team of supportive, dedicated and kind people who have taught me a lot about how to not just be a better lawyer but a better person too.

21.01.2022 Modelling from the Australia Institute, released on Wednesday, estimates the reduction will push a further 155,000 people, including 18,000 children, below the poverty line. When the government first introduced the $550 coronavirus supplement, it was the biggest poverty alleviation policy that I think Australia has ever seen, said Matt Grudnoff, senior economist at the Australia Institute. 21.01.2022 We work collaboratively with our peak body, Economic Justice Australia and our fellow social security community legal centres to ensure that we are providing up-to-date, easy to understand and accurate information on social security (Centrelink) changes. This is particularly important right now due to the changes relating to the Covid-19 pandemic. Here is a photo of our latest meeting with Economic Justice Australia, Social Security Rights Victoria, Welfare Rights Centre NSW and Basic Rights Queensland. If you, or someone you know, would like free legal help with a Centrelink matter, please call us on 6218 7900 if you live in the ACT or visit http://www.ejaustralia.org.au/legal-help-centrelink/ for your nearest legal centre. #freelegaladvice #workingtogether #Centrelink

19.01.2022 The theme for this years NAIDOC week is Always Was, Always Will Be. Always Was, Always Will Be recognises that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years. NAIDOC 2020 invites all Australians to embrace the true history of this country a history which dates back thousands of generations. It’s about seeing, hearing and learning the First Nations’ 65,000+ year history of this country - which is Australian history. We want all Australians to celebrate that we have the oldest continuing cultures on the planet and to recognise that our sovereignty was never ceded. #NAIDOC2020 #NAIDOCWeek

This Clinic, once up and running, will be available to Alexander Macononchie Centre prison population, and will facilitate early referrals to lawyers who can assist with legal issues, and to advise and represent Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in housing, social security and race discrimination. 14.01.2022 For #naidoc2020 we hosted a lunchtime screening of Running to America for staff. The documentary follows the story of 4 young Aboriginal men who were selected by Rob de Castella to train over a period of 8 months to run the New York City Marathon. This story is the beginning of the Indigenous Marathon Project for the The Indigenous Marathon Foundation which now has seen over 100 graduates having run a marathon on 6 months training! The movie was the perfect choice in celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander achievement. #naidocweek #alwayswasalwayswillbe

13.01.2022 Tomorrow (Thursday 19 November) is the Raise the Rate National Day of Action to Raise the Rate for Good before Christmas. There are lots of ways to get involved. You can: Visit your Member of Parliament’s (MP) electorate office to deliver a holiday card in person Call your Member of Parliament’s (MP) electorate office Contact members of the Expenditure Review Committee Organise your own actions.... The goal of the Raise the Rate campaign is to fix our social security safety net for good so that it keeps people out of poverty, with income of $500 per week. Experts define the poverty line in Australia as $480-$500 per week for a single person with no children, including housing costs. Before the COVID-19 crisis, the rate of Newstart had not been increased in real terms for 25 years, while the cost of living, especially housing, has gone through the roof. There is broad support for a permanent increase to the JobSeeker Payment (formerly Newstart Allowance), including from community organisations, such as anti-poverty networks, unions, business groups, not-for-profit organisations, local governments, territory governments and several federal parliamentarians. You can register for the National Day of Action by visiting https://raisetherate.org.au/take-part-in-the-day-of-action/ #RaisetheRateforGood

05.01.2022 The 2020 NAIDOC Week poster features the stunning artwork titled Shape of Land by Noongar and Saibai Islander artist Twrown Waigana. Tyrown’s artwork tells the story of how the Rainbow Serpent came out of the Dreamtime to create this land. It is represented by the snake and it forms the shape of Australia, which symbolises how it created our lands. The colour from the Rainbow Serpent is reflected on to the figure to display our connection to the Rainbow Serpent, thus our connection to country. The overlapping colours on the outside is the Dreamtime. The figure inside the shape of Australia is a representation of Indigenous Australians showing that this country - since the dawn of time - Always Was, Always Will Be Aboriginal Land. #NAIDOC2020 #NAIDOCWeek

01.01.2022 Leasa says, If people on income support cannot afford nutritious food, rent, transport, healthcare - not only can they not apply for work, but their health, mental and physical will suffer. Then we are facing additional costs of increased health care demands and interventions to keep people safe. Adequate income support does not discourage work it boosts health, safety and self-esteem. I see evidence of this every day in my work as a financial counsellor. The additional coro...navirus supplement gave dignity with financial support. Raise the Rate for Good. Instead of cuts and short term measures, we need the Government to put in place a permanent, adequate rate of income support not just for Christmas and the Holidays but permanently. TAKE ACTION: Use the Raise the Rate digital tool to have a physical holiday card sent to key Government leaders with your personal message: https://raisetherate.org.au/holiday-message-2020/ You can also send your own card or print out the one on our website and post to other members of the Government: https://raisetherate.org.au/send-a-holiday-card-to-our.../ The featured card was also designed by Raise The Rate grassroots campaigner Cassie Francisco!
