21.01.2022 Glass artists, this one's for you! Final call for entries into the Toyama International Glass Exhibition 2021. Applications close Thursday 10 December 2020, 11:59PM JST. The Toyama International Glass Exhibition 2021 is an international, open-submission triennial competition that showcases the outstanding works of contemporary glass art from around the world. It is held at the Toyama Glass Art Museum, which shares its mission is to support breakthroughs in creative... expression. This competition is the second in a series started in 2018, when there were 1,110 entries from 46 countries. Contemporary glass art, in which art is used as a material for artistic expression, grew out of new art movements in Czechoslovakia in the 1950s and the United States in the 1960s. In the twenty-first century, its range of expression has expanded, making it an artistic genre with infinite potential. This exhibition will showcase new perspectives in this form of artistic expression and offer a new opportunity to establish Toyama, the Glass Art City, as a global center for glass art. https://toyama-glass.jp/en/ Image: Installation view "Toyama International Glass Exhibition 2018", 2018. 08.01.2022 As Smoke & Mirrors draws to a close, we will be hosting an exhibition floor talk in the gallery with artist, Simon Maberley, this Sunday. Based on the south coast of New South Wales, artist Simon Maberley investigates contrasting themes such as technology and climate, industry and nature and human and animal. His highly narrative artworks critique the way contemporary culture engages and deals with challenges. In early 2020 much of the New South Wales coastline was devastate...d by bushfires. Living through this catastrophic series of events was unforgettable for most people who experienced it. In response, Maberley has produced a body of work which attempts to convey the effects on land and community. He is asking us to reflect on the feelings we experience after such dramatic events and to remember that from the loss comes renewal. Join us for our floor talk 2:30pm Sunday 15th November, Canberra Glassworks gallery. Booking is essential https://canberraglassworks.com/visit/artist-talks/ Image: Simon Maberley, Epicinium, 2020, ground mirror, wooden frame, coal, blown glass, video. Photo by Brenton McGeachie.
