10.01.2022 LETS LIGHT UP CANBERRA IN PINK AND BLUE ON OCTOBER 15th Every four hours today, a baby will be stillborn, brought into this world silently and never to grow ...up as their families had so hoped and dreamed for. By the time you roll into bed tonight, 6 Australian families will be grieving and facing the shock of losing their loved and longed for baby. The death of a baby is an earth-shattering, life changing experience. But, sadly far more common than many people realise, even here in our ‘lucky country’ of Australia. Shockingly, 282 women a day in Australia experience early pregnancy loss before 20 weeks gestation that’s 103,000 couples a year with one in four women under 35 experiencing a miscarriage. By age 35, this increases to one in three, while half of all pregnant women over 40 will lose their baby to miscarriage. Every day while 6 babies are stillborn, there are another 2 babies who die within 28 days of birth (neonatal death). On October 15 to mark International Remembrance Day for Pregnancy and Infant Loss, Australia comes together to support families dealing with this pain and to honour the thousands of little lives lost. Since 2012 Pregnancy and Infant Loss Australia has been advocating for recognition of this important day right across our nation. Their advocacy and awareness work includes lighting up buildings in pink and blue across Australia each year. In Canberra, Pregnancy and Infant Loss Australia have worked closely with local Canberra stillbirth advocates, Bonnie & Steve Carter, to have our own city recognise this important day and to have buildings lit up to support Canberra families. This year on the evening of Thursday 15 October 2020, more sites than ever before will light up our beautiful city in pink and blue with 10 Canberra landmarks being illuminated, including: - Old Parliament House - National Carillon - Royal Australian Mint - National Archives of Australia - Canberra Airport (terminal) - Bowen Place (Lake Burley Griffin) - Kings Avenue Bridge (overpass) - Canberra Times Foundation (city) - Various Light Rail interchanges/stops - Telstra Tower We ask all Canberrans to visit the local sites and take a moment to reflect on the many people who experience the tragic loss of a baby or reach out to those who you may know that have been affected and let them know you are thinking of them. Please share your photos and stories far and wide, to help us break the taboo and silence around pregnancy and infant loss. For those who can’t get out to see the sites, please help us by being part of the International Wave of Light by lighting a candle for your friends and community. Please share this announcement with your networks and advertise on your own platforms wherever possible.
