23.01.2022 Blowing bubbles! Not only is it fun but you can use bubbles to help a toddler's speech and language skills. For instance, play language games by asking for "more", saying "pop", counting bubbles and concepts like "up and down". Blowing bubbles may help your child develop an awareness of their lips, tongue and mouth as well as the movements needed for speech sounds (such as rounding and closing lips). It's also a great exercise for breath control.

17.01.2022 Some tips for talking with your toddler. Meal times can be a social time for the family but by specifically talking about the food you're eating, you can also help develop language skills. Talk about what each food is, how it was cooked, the colours on the plate and tastes associated with it. Not only is your toddler exposed to lots of language but possibly new vocabulary (eg. sweet, sour, spicy, boiled, stir fry, baked, steamed, creamy, crunchy, soggy). When you've exhausted that topic, placemats can also become an opportunity to make up stories about the characters and scenes on the mats. Be warned - meal times may take a lot longer than usual!

17.01.2022 By five years of age, the majority of children that speak English are able to say 93% of consonants and 98% of vowels correctly (McLeod, S. & Crowe, K. (2018). If your child is older than five years of age and still lisping (thee v see) or produces "s" in a "slushy" or thick way, has difficulty pronouncing "r" (wabbit v rabbit) or saying "y" (lellow v yellow) - get in touch with Canberra Speech Therapy for assistance.

07.01.2022 School holidays - you’re either there or they’re fast approaching. Holidays are a great time to encourage your child to read! Order books online at your local library and stock up on all those titles your child may have asked for during the year. Make a day out going to collect them. If you’re not sure what to get or have a reluctant reader, your librarian can help you with appropriate suggestions. Reading with your child is an easy (and free) way to encourage a love of books..., vocabulary development, story narratives and retells. Best of all, it’s screen free! An important addition to the picture below is that a student who reads OR is read to... Photo credit: Scholastic.

06.01.2022 Read, read, read with your kids! Set aside 5-10 mins before bed each night and it becomes built into your child’s bedtime routine. Also, try not to crack up watching this Scottish granny reading to her grandson!

04.01.2022 Now that's a lot of questions...and there's still one week of school holidays to go! By answering your child's questions with a question of your own, you can help develop and enrich their language skills. You could ask: What do you think will happen if... (prediction skills)... How would you feel if that happened to you? How do you think ... feels? (consider other viewpoints) What make these different? What makes these the same? (comparisons) What could you do... (problem solving skills) What made you choose that? (evaluating skills)
