25.01.2022 Early in 2020, the CSO moved into a new office space at 1 Farrell Place. Now, we’re thrilled to be teaming up with the UC Faculty of Arts & Design, who are designing and building a snazzy new reception workspace for our hardworking Ticketing Manager, David Flynn. The project is being fabricated at UC’s FAD WORKSHOP7, a new facility built to provide UC’s design students with almost any resource they might need for models, prototypes, production parts, and research projects. Th...e reception desk was designed and is being fabricated by WORKSHOP7 technical staff Bill Shelley and Ben Claase. Here’s one of many hand drawings from the design proposal stage, along with a rendering of the final proposal and some snaps of the fabrication in progress. The design employs traditional fine furniture and luthiery timbers coupled with more contemporary carbon fibre finishes on curved surfaces, inspired by timber marquetry techniques found on fine musical instruments.

25.01.2022 Strikingly titled The Hairyworm Hobble, this week's Australian Miniseries commission was written by Canberra-based composer Michael Sollis for his wife and collaborator, Kiri Sollis. Michael says: "The music certainly came first, although I did have an image in my head of an animal moving through landscape.... I discovered that carrying a decaying caterpillar (once described as a hairyworm) around your neck was an alleged cure for whooping cough in the 19th century. For those who are interested, the reference to hairyworms came from the wonderful Dictionary of Superstitions edited by Iona Opie and Moira Tatem. Interestingly, the etymology for the word caterpillar can be derived from 'hairy cat'." Michael creates captivating artistic journeys by sharing diverse worldviews with curious people, inviting audiences to discover and question the world around them. This has included his work as founder, composer, and director of the acclaimed The Griffyn Ensemble. His works have been performed by groups including the Australian String Quartet, The Australian Voices and Red Note Ensemble. 24.01.2022 We recently completed our Music and Memory pilot program for people living with dementia. Over the course of eight weeks, we saw a statistically significant reduction in disruptive behaviours. Anecdotally, improvements in mood and increased social interaction were also observed from the calming effect of the music to singing, dancing and reminiscing. A big shout out to all the performing musicians, as well as CSO's Kristen Sutcliffe, who oversaw and curated the program, an...d David Flynn, who arranged the repertoire chosen by our study group. We also thank Goodwin Aged Care Services and ActewAGL for partnering with us to make this program possible, and Heather Roche, third-year Psychology student at University of Canberra, for her invaluable contributions to program design and analysis of the findings. Have a read below (thanks The RiotACT ) and head to our website for the full findings. https://cso.org.au/music-memory-findings/ https://the-riotact.com/music-strikes-right-chord-in/406607

13.01.2022 Tomorrow night's Australian Miniseries commission "Dianna" (Liza Lim) is premiered by CSO Principal French Horn Dianna Gaetjens, and titled for her. The piece uses the harmonics of the French horn and various techniques to mimic the sound of the Australian bush, specifically magpies. This was one of several themes that Dianna discussed with composer Liza Lim in the collaborative development of the work. Dianna says, "All in all, it takes the listener on a very compresse...d journey of what the horn can do." Dianna received her masters from the Hochschule für Musik Hans Eisler where she studied with Professor Marie-Luise Neunecker. Aged 19, she was accepted into the Orchestra Academy of the Berliner Philharmoniker; she spent two years with the Berlin Philharmonic performing, touring, and recording. Dianna has toured Australia and internationally as a soloist, and received numerous international accolades. 12.01.2022 The CSO’s new reception workspace is taking shape in the capable hands of the team at UC Faculty of Arts & Design. The desk now stands on its own six feet and is starting to look like the drawings. For the fine furniture aficionados among you, the platform is supported by a Y-shaped spar, providing a cantilevered desk at the curved end which will create a wheelchair accessible space for ticket purchase. Looking forward to seeing the workspace in action!

12.01.2022 The next commission in our Australian Miniseries was written by Melody Eötvös, inspired by the character of Odin in Norse mythology. Disguised as Gestumblindi, Odin presents King Heidrek with a series of clever riddles. "I was intrigued by the idea of creating a short musical 'riddle' that attempts to project both an exchange between two characters, as well as the heavily metaphorical nature of a riddle." Melody has been involved in numerous festivals and workshops internatio...nally, most recently as a composer in residence with the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music in Santa Cruz. Recent commissions include The Philadelphia Orchestra (USA), the Australian Chamber Orchestra and the Grand Teton Music Festival Orchestra (USA). 07.01.2022 Sollis told Canberra Weekly that creating The Hairyworm Hobble has been his first opportunity in a long time to create new music. When you’re a composer, sometimes too much stress can be placed on making sure you have enough notes on the page; what you want is the right idea and framework for a performer, he said. TONIGHT--> CSO YouTube / Facebook... Thanks Canberra Weekly https://canberraweekly.com.au/sollis-greatly-composed-duri/

06.01.2022 This evening's online premiere of "Herr Beethoven's Audiologist" (Vincent Plush) is performed by CSO bassoonist and practising audiologist Kristen Sutcliffe. As well as the CSO, Kristen has played with the Australian Youth Orchestra, the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM), Lyric Opera and the Australian Classical Players. Kristen divides her time between her work as a specialist audiologist and musical work, including curating the CSO's Rediscovering Music program fo...r people with hearing loss. 06.01.2022 This week, our Australian Miniseries features Vincent Plush, widely known as a composer, ensemble leader, teacher, broadcaster, events and festival director and writer about music. Vincent spent a number of years living in Canberra, where he was Head of Research and National Public Programs at the NFSA - National Film and Sound Archive of Australia for several years. Vincent's piece "Herr Beethoven's Audiologist" was written for CSO bassoonist and practising audiologist Kris...ten Sutcliffe. Vincent writes: "...the piece takes the form of Beethoven himself being subjected to a present-day audiology test. [The composer famously wrote about his diminishing hearing in the Heiligenstadt Testament (1802).] "In his head, the blips and blurts of the test compete with a melody that strains to emerge, but never quite manages to do so, no matter how hard Beethoven pushes to the limits of the bassoon’s uppermost register." 02.01.2022 This week's Monday Mixtape is curated by Principal Second Violin Doreen Cumming. "In compiling this list, I noticed an undeniable trend towards dark, unsettling works," says Doreen. "I’ve always known these are the pieces that really captivate me; compiling this mixtape gave me the opportunity to think about why. "...The fathomless compassion and empathy these composers felt inspired them to capture the devastation they witnessed, or were affected by. This is really what we ...are consumed with as our emotions are tested by a haunting phrase or a jarring harmony. They allow us a rare insight into history, far more powerful than any written reference. An unforgettable slice of empathy, a reminder of humanity, that we can hopefully call upon should a similar event rear its ugly head."
