25.01.2022 WA RAW FEEDERS have you checked out newly opened Pet Fresh located in Lord St, Perth? I have been trialing my dogs on their food and am super happy with the freshness, quality and range. Friendly, great service and and free delivery for orders over $50. Highly recommend them. My boys particularly enjoy their Supermixes. PS I am not getting a kickback from this. Just putting it out there because as a raw feeder I know how hard it is to source good quality fresh food :)
25.01.2022 WOW 10.6 kg of jewellery bound for Singapore! Big THANK YOU to my clients and friends who have generously donated jewellery to help the dogs rescued from the dog meat trade in Cambodia and China. These pieces will be up upcycled and used to recreate unique new pieces by designer Stanley Shen. 100% of the proceeds from the sales will go to Michael Chour and the Chu Hui and Wang Yan shelters. ... More than USD$6000 has been raised since this initiative started in July 2017. People from around the world have donated beads and unwanted jewellery for this wonderful cause. It is not too late. I am still collecting for another trip in July. No donation is too small, every piece helps.
25.01.2022 Many of the vegetables we buy from stores have been there for weeks and have little to no nutrients. For a truly organic, fresh and nutritious food, nothing beats growing your own sprouts. And if I can do it anyone can! It is super easy and can be grown indoors. You dont even need soil! The easiest method I found was using Mr Fothergills Microgreen trays. They are available from Bunnings for around $10 each. You just need to buy the seeds.... If you dont fancy growing them yourself, sprouts are readily available at most farmers markets and grocery stores like Coles and Woolworths.
25.01.2022 Check out Impressionable Kids Aubin Grove WA for doggy memorabilia. They are a local business and Sonia is great to deal with!
24.01.2022 WHAT FISH ARE SAFE AND SUSTAINABLE TO FEED YOUR DOGS? My top 3 fish (based on contamination levels, health benefits and sustainability): 1. Wild caught salmon 2. Sardines... 3. Mussels ***SALMON*** Wild caught frozen salmon is also safe to feed. If you dont have ready access to wild caught salmon, salmon from Australian company Tassal Salmon is a good option. It is not wild caught but Tassal salmon are non-GMO and grown in ocean farms where the health and welfare of the fish are a priority. They are available in fresh and canned varieties.
24.01.2022 No time to make bone broth? Check this out from Broth of Life - dehydrated, organic bone broth for dogs. Just add hot water or sprinkle on food. My own dogs love it and it is a pantry staple when I run out of home-made broth.
22.01.2022 Is there a conflict of interest when vets sell dog food? The next time your vet recommends a commercial dog food, do your own research and question if it is a biologically appropriate food for your dog.
22.01.2022 If making bone broth all the time is not your thing, the only bone broth I was able to find that had the same quality as homemade broth is from Kettle and Fire. Made from grass fed cattle, super gelatinous, it is the richest bone broth I have found. Australians can buy Kettle and Fire bone broth online from iherb.
21.01.2022 Does your dogs joints stiffen up after he or she is stationary for too long? But once they get moving, they loosen up? You see our spines have joints that contain a fluid called synovial fluid. The role of the synovial fluid is to lubricate and reduce friction between joints during movement. Movement encourages the circulation of this synovial fluid. Regular movement helps manage muscular and joint pain. It keeps muscles and joints flexible. I am NOT not recommending OVER...-activity either! For dogs with muscular and orthopaedic issues, the key is low-impact short and frequent exercise.
21.01.2022 My super easy and healthy ice-cream will help you and your dog stay cool in summer. INGREDIENTS 6 large ripe, spotty bananas (store in chunks overnight in freezer) ... 500 ml Coconut Cream METHOD Blend bananas and coconut cream for 1-2 minutes in a powerful blender until the mixture is smooth and silky (like the texture of soft serve ice cream). The ice cream is delicious when eaten immediately but it will be quite soft. Transfer to a container and freeze until solid like traditional ice cream (about 6 hours). It freezes well so pop any leftovers back in the freezer. TIP: Remove from the freezer 10-15 minutes before eating. It helps with the scooping out.
20.01.2022 FISH TO AVOID Confused about the whole mercury and heavy metals thing when it comes to feeding fish to your dogs? Here is my list of fish to avoid. 3 factors were considered:... 1. Contamination 2. Overall health benefits 3. Sustainability The first toxin to consider is mercury. When your dogs have large amounts of mercury in their bodies, it can cause serious central nervous issues such as muscles that do not contract well and general feelings of weakness. It takes 12-18 months for mercury to clear out of their systems. Since mercury is odorless and invisible, its not easy to detect and cant be avoided by trimming off the skin or other parts. The fish that have high amounts of mercury are usually the large predatory fish such as shark, tuna, king mackerel and sword fish. The second toxin to consider is industrial chemical toxins. These are the by products of factories that leak into our waterways. These toxins are heavier and higher density than water and end up sinking down to the bottom of the ocean. The fish that these usually affect are the bottom feeders, the ones that loiter on the bottom of the ocean floor such as eels, sea bass, trout, flounder and cod. Worse than lead and mercury these industrial toxins take 5-8 years to clear out of the body. LIST OF FISH TO AVOID : shark, tuna, king mackerel, sword fish, tilapia, eel, sea bass, trout, flounder and cod ***Note on TILAPIA*** One of the worst fish you can feed your dogs. It is a very low nutrient fish. Tilapia is all farmed, never wild caught. They usually come from countries that dont pay attention to quality standards. Disgustingly Tilapia can live off faeces. Avoid at all costs!
20.01.2022 Be scrupulous in sourcing meats. On your next shopping trip become familiar with the terms organic, grass-fed and finished, cage-free, free-range and pasteur-raised. If you are buying beef it should be grass-fed or/and grass finished, if youre buying chicken and pork, it should be pasteur-raised. Organic meats could still come from animals fed a grain and corn-based diet. Pasteur-raised animals consume some feed and lots of grass, bug, worms and anything else they find in th...e outdoors. Overuse of hormones and antibiotics is a big issue in animal agriculture . Even if you avoid giving your dogs antibiotics, it is in the meats your dogs eat. Switch from conventional raised meat from stressed factory-raised animals to grass fed meat. Conventional raised animals is fed a diet of grains. These grains can be detrimental to your dogs health. Grass fed meat is not as hard on your dogs gut because it is rich in omega 3s which lowers inflammation.
19.01.2022 What are the signs your dog is in pain? Dogs that exercise regularly live longer and are happier. However we need to be wary of over-exercising our dogs especially puppies and senior dogs. Make sure to incorporate rest days between intense workouts to allow the muscles to recover. Many dogs will push themselves because they love being with their owners and are eager to please. Be sensitive to your dogs behaviour and be watchful for these signs that your dog is in pain:... Excessive panting Lagging behind Limping Laying down Reluctance to go for a walk Rolling back muscles indicating muscle fatigue
17.01.2022 Pack a bottle of coconut water for your dog before venturing out on a hot summers day. Also known as NATURES GATORADE, Coconut water is great for replenishing fluids and electrolytes. To reap the maximum benefits, opt for fresh coconut water over the bottled version. Use a spoon to scoop out the juicy coconut meat. The meat is rich in fibre, iron, manganese, copper and phosphorus.
15.01.2022 Happy holidays! Huge thank you to all my clients for your support throughout the year. I look forward to seeing you again in 2018! Thank you for making my first year such an awesome one!!! ... CMW will be open during the holidays for intrastate clients so dont hesitate to ring if your dogs need a tune-up. For emergency cases, please see your vet.
12.01.2022 For decades, vets have prescribed extended crate rest for post-surgery and injury treatment. It is now well established that IMMOBILITY IS DETRIMENTAL to muscles and joints. The most obvious effects of long periods of immobility can be seen in the musculoskeletal system: muscle atrophy loss of muscle strength... weakening of the joints. Muscles shorten and lose their full range of movement when they are immobilised. A rehabilitation programme of post operative exercises can prevent these issues.
12.01.2022 They may be tiny, but sprouts punch well above their weight when it comes to nutrition. Do you have a picky eater who picks out the greens in the food bowl? Sprouts are far superior in nutritional value than their mature plants so nutritionally, a little goes a long way. Plus they are tiny so they are easy to mix in with other foods.... The broccoli sprout is 50 x more anti cancer than the mature broccoli itself. And sprouts of red cabbage, cilantro, and radish contain up to 40 times higher levels of vital nutrients than their mature counterparts. Researchers discovered that red cabbage sprouts had 40 times more vitamin E and six times more vitamin C than mature red cabbage; whilst cilantro sprouts had three times more beta-carotene than mature cilantro. Note when feeding any plants to your dog: To help your dog absorb these healthy nutrients, plant matter needs to be processed in some way so the cell wall is broken down.(cooked/steamed/blended/grated)
12.01.2022 Dog diarrhoea getting you down? And all the natural remedies recommended on google have failed to produce firm stools - mashed pumpkin, bland diet of boiled chicken and rice, probiotics, slippery elm etc Have you tried boiling GREEN BANANAS??? So how exactly does green bananas stop diarrhea? ... The antidiarrheal effect of green banana has been attributed to its content of resistant starch. Resistant starch cannot be digested by the body but becomes a fertiliser for good gut bacteria. As it passes through the digestive tract it absorbs excess fluid making the stools firmer. Green bananas: Calm an irritable gut. Are a nutrient powerhouse. They are a rich source of vitamins like Vitamin B6 and Vitamin C; also high in minerals potassium, zinc, magnesium, phosphorous and manganese. Cooked green bananas is a popular side dish in many Caribbean islands where they are used like potatoes. When cooked they have the texture and taste of potatoes. Note: Most cases of doggy diarrhoea can be treated at home. But if your dogs digestive disease is severe or persistent, please see your veterinarian to rule out liver, kidney, endocrine or other more serious problems, parasites, obstructions and cancer.
11.01.2022 Enzymes in food help the digestion process by breaking down carbohydrates, fats and protein. Raw fresh food contain live enzymes. Food processed at high temperatures (such as kibble) are depleted of enzymes. So what are the consequences of improper food digestion? ... Bloating Farts Bad breath Improper food digestion Nutrient malabsorption Do all dogs need digestive enzyme supplements? Enzymes supplementation are particularly beneficial for dogs who: are fed cooked or processed food are suffering from digestive disorders Senior dogs Healthy dogs can also benefit from enzyme supplementation for optimal digestion and toxin elimination.

11.01.2022 Has your dog had on and off diarrhoea for months? And vet tests were inconclusive or the treatments worked only for a short time? The cause could be a lumbar injury. In the article below, Dr Dobias discusses this issue and how when the lumbar spine is injured, the underlying organ has reduced energy flow and becomes dysfunctional. Not sure if your dog has a lumbar injury? Make an appointment to see us. We dont charge for checkups and if your dog is injury-free.
10.01.2022 Last week when I posted about the use of cooked green bananas to stop doggy diarrhoea, a few of you wanted to know how to cook it. Well here it is my BOILED GREEN BANANAS recipe... INGREDIENTS Bunch of green bananas. Use the greenest bananas you can find.... METHOD Soak or wash the bananas to remove any dirt and pesticides. I use a 1:4 mixture of apple cider vinegar and filtered water. Cut off both ends of the bananas and score down skin the middle of each one. Green bananas can also be cooked without the peel. But I found boiling with the peel easier because it is difficult to remove the peel from green bananas. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the bananas, reduce heat to medium and cook over a low boil until the bananas are cooked through and can be easily pierced with a fork. This will take about 20 minutes. Remove the bananas to a cutting board. When cooled, peel, cut into cubes and serve.
10.01.2022 There is a misconception that a diagnosis of arthritis (or any other joint issue) means that you need to slow down activities for your dog to preserve his or her joints from further damage. Keeping your dog still is worse for its body than activity. Determine the right activity and level of activity. The choice of activity will depend on the age of the dog and the severity of the issue. A muscle therapist will be able to assist here.... CONTROLLED EXERCISE that keeps your dog stretching and moving and circulating blood to all its stiff joints DAILY EXERCISE Remember: The key is LOW IMPACT, SHORT AND FREQUENT. Do NOT over-exercise. Do not allow for long periods of inactivity when your dogs muscles have an opportunity to stiffen. Look for SIGNS OF EXERTION Such as heavy panting, pain . Stop the activity immediately. Pushing forward can cause injury. EXAMPLES OF LOW IMPACT EXERCISES Walking, swimming, use of Fitpaws equipment. Keep exercises short 15-30 minutes of activities daily is a good start. WARM UP AND COOL DOWN A minute or two of slow walking before initiating low-impact exercise activities will help arthritic dogs move easier. Cooling down reduces stiffness and soreness by assisting the removal of lactic acids in the body. You can give your dog a massage (such as effleurage) during "cool downs and gradually reduce their heart rate to a normal resting rate.
08.01.2022 IF YOUR DOG HATES NAIL TRIMS, using a pair of blunt nail clippers will make a bad situation worse. If the clippers are not sharp, instead of a clean, quick snip, the clippers crush the nail making it uncomfortable and painful for your dog. After being in use for some time, many clippers become dull and need replacing. Replace with a nail Grinder or new nail clippers. We like the ... 1. Dremel Micro 2. Millers Forge or Safari nail clippers Do not be fooled by the small size of these clippers. I have used them with success on large dogs with very thick, hard nails. The trick is to cut off little bits at a time. You shouldnt have to press hard. The clippers should cut the nail like a knife through butter.
07.01.2022 Did you know that the popping or cracking sound that can sometimes be heard during a chiropractic manipulation is actually made by the release of gases from the spinal fluid? When joint tissues are stretched during a chiropractic adjustment, the pockets of air "pop," which creates that cracking sound you hear.
06.01.2022 Serious injuries like limps are obvious but most times signs of muscular injuries are not obvious to the untrained eye. To identify injuries, I recommend owners train themselves to be observant of their dogs movement and behaviour. Observe your dog daily so you are cognisant when he or she has an injury. Study your dog stretching, turning, walking, running. Study your dog well so that you will notice subtle signs like tightness, tenderness and restricted movement. Early detection and prompt attention to any muscular injuries is important so that it does not become an issue. When a dogs structure is perfectly aligned and muscles are toned, its movement is balanced and graceful. Any muscular injuries will cause a change in gait.
06.01.2022 A senior dog needs daily outings and exercise. Many people think that as a dog reaches his or her senior years, there is no longer a need to walk them because they dont require much energy draining. A senior dog might have reduced desire for physical exercise but he still has an emotional need to feel fulfilled and stimulated by going on outings and experiencing nature. In a multi-dog household I recommend walking your senior dog separately. Be guided by him and keep the wa...lks short. Limit strenuous activities such as games of fetch and walking in deep grass or sand for long periods. These activities are fatiguing for a senior dog after a short time. No matter how short or long the walk, dont be distracted by your mobile phone, be present with your dog and celebrate each walk the way you did when he was a puppy. Similar to caring for an elderly human, provide relaxation activities such as massages. Help them if they have trouble going up and down stairs, use physical aids like ramps and harnesses if you have to. Most of all, be patient and protect them. He might be slower, hard of hearing and sight but he still loves you unconditionally. Embrace and enjoy every moment with your senior dog. Celebrate his life for your time together could be numbered x
05.01.2022 Thank you to all my wonderful clients who continue to support me. For non-urgent visits, to maintain patient care please remember I am just a phone call or email away.
03.01.2022 Muscular injuries can be unpredictable especially in young dogs who play roughly. But how can you protect your dog from most preventable injuries? 1. WARMING UP Preparing the muscles for activity by warming them up will decrease risk of injury. Warm up exercises include... Brisk walking Stretching (For eg Stand on hind legs on a park bench to give the back a good stretch) Playing tug (excellent for actively stretching the whole body but BE GENTLE!) Bowing Backing up Circles 2. AVOID OVER-EXERCISING Exercising your dog to the point of muscle fatigue is dangerous. When the muscles are fatiqued, they are at risk of harm from muscle strains as well as ligament and joint damage. 3. FOLLOW A BALANCED STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING PROGRAM A well designed strength and conditioning program will strengthen muscles, joints, ligaments and tendons. Why is this important? Stronger muscles help hold the body in proper alignment when moving or under impact. A good program will also address weak areas in the body to decrease risk of injury.
03.01.2022 Does anyone have any unwanted jewellery and beads they would like to donate to a great cause? Stanley Shen is a talented designer who upcycles and recreates unique new pieces from old jewellery to support dogs rescued from the meat trade in Cambodia and China. 100% of the proceeds from the sale of Stanleys creations go to Michael Chour and the Chu Hui and Wang Yan shelters. USD$3200 has been raised since this initiative started in July 2017. People from around the world have... donated beads and unwanted jewellery for this wonderful cause. Many times I have recoiled with horror and disgust at the images of dogs destined for the meat market. But felt helpless and didnt know how to help them. Clicking the angry emoticon and sharing the post was not enough. So I am doing my little bit and collecting old jewellery from family, friends and clients. I will hand them to Stanley when I am in Singapore in January. If you can help, jewellery can be: 1. Sent or handed to me personally 2. Dropped off at Alpha Dog at Dogswest. I will be collecting till mid January. Please place into a zip lock bag or envelope labelled with your name so you can be credited for them. If you are interested in purchasing a bracelet, please go to Stanley Shens facebook page. They sell for USD$50 (includes delivery)
02.01.2022 Looking forward to trialling my dogs on the new Prime100 salmon rolls. They make great treats when chopped into cubes.
02.01.2022 The saturated fats in coconut oil has anti-microbial and anti fungal properties which can help balance gut bacteria. But did you know that if coconut oil is taken at the same time as omega 3s such as oily fish, leafy greens and chia seeds it can make them twice as effective???
02.01.2022 CAVALETTI training is great for increasing reach and drive in your show dogs. Basically it is trotting your dog over poles. This video shows all the muscles activated by this simple exercise. Low impact and cheap to make, it teaches correct foot fall and timing. Cavaletti is routine practice for show horses but unlike horses, most dogs dont know they have back feet. Cavaletti teaches dogs to be aware of their feet placement. PVC pipes from Bunnings work well. The pipes cann...ot be glued on solid because your dog must realize that the pipes will move if he is not careful with his feet. To start training, the distance between the pipes should be about the distance from the ground to your dogs withers (highest point of shoulder). Work your dog daily back and forth at least 10 times in each direction. When the dog is trotting comfortably over the poles, work out his max stride length. This differs for each dog. Play with the distance between the poles - I find that for many dogs this is 1.5 x the distance from the ground to the withers. Feel free to try out our Cavaletti equipment at your next appointment. We will teach you to make it a fun activity that you and your dog will enjoy.
01.01.2022 Wow I need one of these!
