23.01.2022 'The Little Red Case' To cut the story short- A Little Red Case was left at the Canungra Op Shop which then found its way to the Canungra Information Centre. Full of photos and pics relating mainly to the family 'TAPLIN' some from the 1800's. Our lovely Historian Alison from the Info Centre went on to trace a family member and delivered the case to Emily in Sydney recently. Q. Does anyone know the name 'TAPLIN' or how the case made its way to Canungra. Pic: Emily & Alison

18.01.2022 BOYLAND Where did the name come from?? From sometime in the late 1890s, 1900s a family of Boylands lived on the property where Wagon Wheel Drive runs... through today. # In the application to form the Canungera Rifle in 1907 among the signatories are William H Boyland [42 yrs] and Albert J Boyland [48 yrs] -- both dairy farmers from Boyland. # From The History of Biddaddaba Creek [1999] ---The Boyland Railway Station was named in c. 1915 after a Tambourine Shire Councillor, George Boyland, who had died in 1908. # In the history of the QCWA Wonglepong Branch it states:- with voluntary labour from our menfolk, the hall was erected and opened on 4th December 1935 by Mrs. Buchannan, President of Central Region. A sports day, organized by Mr. Tom Boyland on New Year’s Day resulted in the hall being free of debt In the Wonglepong Cemetery are the graves of Tom Boyland [d.29-04-1945] and Edith Minnie Boyland [d.07-08-1990]. Edith was known as Sissy. The Boyland Family had originally farmed [dairy] near Archerfield There is a small historical cemetery near the airport known as God’s Acre where many of the Boyland Family are buried. When visiting this site recently Alison Anderson [Canungra Historical Society] met a couple -- Bill and Lenore Ferguson. Bill is related to the Boylands and Lenore is a Gr-Grand daughter of William Kidston. In 1910, Laheys invited William Kidston [Premier of Queensland] for the weekend in an effort to persuade him that the Government Railway needed to be extended from Logan Village to Canungra. After the railway opened in 1915, a public auction of the town blocks was held on May 2nd, 1916 -- a poster shows that one of the main Streets was named Kidston Street in recognition of the premier ’s assistance. story by Joyce LIbke With an interest in history Bill and Lenore often visit Canungra. 17.01.2022 A couple of months ago Rod Duncan and I had the privilege to visit an old Canungra resident, Don House. Don and his family moved to Canungra in 1934, his father Harry House took up the position as Post Master, at that time the post office was still being run out of David Smith’s store. Harry acquired the position through the soldier settlement scheme. Around 1937 Harry built the current Post Office and their house which is now the Metz Cafe. In the photo is Rod Duncan, Don and his niece Jocelyn. I hope to have Don Visit Canungra in the near future and have more time to sit and talk to him. Alison Anderson

14.01.2022 BINNA BURRA Binna Burra Mountain Lodge, begun in the 1930s by Romeo Lahey and Arthur Groom, forms part of the World Heritage listed Central Eastern Rainforest Reserve and is a cultural landscape listed on the Queensland heritage register. So sad that the legacy of these wonderful people has met such a fate.... Copied from the Beaudesert Town and Surrounds page posted bt Terence Egan. For some reason the links would not work. 14.01.2022 Hi All Just to remind people about the Art Exhibition by Harry McVey this Saturday 1) A Bush Poetry Performance Competition in memory of Mum (Betty Markwell) open to entries from Beaudesert and the surrounding areas. We have made a lovely trophy from timber form a red cedar the grew in Mum’s garden 2) An exhibition of the artworks of Harry McVey (my Grandfather and Betty’s father) Details are here: https://harrymcveyart.wordpress.com/poetry-paintings-and-p/ We have never had all of Grandads artworks all together for an exhibition - so this is a once off not likely to be repeated. It will be held at the information centre in Beaudesert (just next to Wongaburra) On Saturday 2 November open from about 8am till about 1pm.

10.01.2022 Q.A.T..B. station at Canungra (Contributed by: QldPics) A horsedrawn ambulance wagon was bought in 1915 and Matt Braiden became Q.A.T.B ambulance man. Two-store...y building was erected in Appel Street in 1916. (Description supplied with photograph. This home is still standing and located in Appel Street. See more

10.01.2022 Thomas Allen & Mary Ann Charlotte Watterson (nee Chisler) and eight of their nine children, Canungra circa 1908. The family settled in Canungra after leaving the Cudgera area in Northern NSW sometime between 1902-1905.

09.01.2022 GOOD NEWS Our firefighters found the Binna Burra Lodge Lunch Bell among the wreckage and have returned it to staff. It's from the historic train that travelled from Canungra to the base of Binna Burra transporting logs and timber during its build. Great work everyone!

07.01.2022 Memoir from Vicki Rayner of her family days growing up on ‘Tabletop’ and the family visit back there in 2016. Tabletop is the name of the property at the end of Tabletop Road, Pine Creek, as it was known then, now referred to as Illinbah. I lived there from birth to around 5 years of age, and although that wasn’t a long period of time, Tabletop holds many enduringly vivid and happy memories! As it was, Yesterday we all went back to where it began, Tabletop! I have some v...ivid memories of living there as a small child....... one Easter waking up with my sister Vanessa Whitty, and making our way down to Mum & Dad at the dairy to show off what the Easter Bunny had left us. A great swing set out the front of the house, a Granny Smith apple tree out the back, horses & dogs!! I also recall the terror of parts of that road leading to home! When I started to organise this family day, I drove up to the 'locked gate', as I have done many times since, just to see what condition the road was in. Totally out of the blue, those terrors returned! I returned to a time when I was a small child who, sitting in the back of the Landrover, thought we were going to fall off the side of the mountain!! Sook!!! Anyway, I so looked forward to seeing the old homestead, but Paul Mahony told me it had been taken off the stumps in the 60's?? Oh!..Ok... so it’s the old house on a slab now (I thought) Nothing prepared me for what we found!!, Crikey, hell, bugger, poop (as Mum would have said), what a bloody shame!! Other than this disappointment, we all had a fabulous day, reminiscing of bygone days, (Thanks mostly to Greg Peel and Paul Mahony) of carefree childhoods running around at the top of the world! We set up under the shade of a big fig tree, away from the flies and cow poo! and all enjoyed a delicious lunch, watched the kids climbing the old fig tree & making their own fun. I found an apple tree ( could be the one I remember?, so I took cuttings and also of a Camellia tree(Mum loved camellia's) it looked old enough to be one of hers? Despite myself, I got a wee bit teary as we drove away, (I!) sad to leave. (I hope we can do it again, but who knows) It was a day that I will treasure forever, spent with very special family! fb/2018/+pics3/local0001

04.01.2022 Volunteer Defense Corps 1944-1945 Canungra Qld. This Photo was supplied by Karen the daughter of Allan Rosser. Allan is one of the few remaining Volunteer Defense Corps in our area. Lots of local names were mentioned as being in the VDC and we were wondering if your family was? Allan is middle row, fourth from the right.... Does anyone know where the photo was taken?
