25.01.2022 This is quite amusing but also when I think about how that would have been trained it’s really impressive. There is no way force/pain could be safely used on a huge ass seal like that the only way those behaviours could have been trained is R+. I don’t understand the argument that some dogs need P+ it’s only because essentially any human, especially armed with what are basically weapons can overpower just about any dog that we get away with thoughts like that. Could you imag...e trying to put a prong collar on that seal? It’d make very short work of you for doing so. So we can train a seal that weighs I dunno let’s guess 250kg to do behaviours that I wouldn’t say were natural, like I don’t see seals in the wild doing sit ups, but there are people out there who claim it’s impossible to train a dog that weighs 100kg or less to walk at heel without pain? 25.01.2022 Please sign and share this for our friends in NZ. Sadly NZ laws around assistance dogs are archaic. We are petitioning for legislative change that will grant fairer access to assistance dogs for people with disabilities in NZ. Because of the limited options available over there I have clients who have approached me for help because none of the approved assistance dog orgs in NZ can meet their needs. https://www.parliament.nz//petition-of-jenny-mcardle-great

24.01.2022 It is International Assistance Dog Week! Lets raise a glass to our assistance dogs and give them a special treat. Assistance dogs change the lives of their disabled handlers. Granting people with a disability more freedom, more independence, greater access to their communities and undoubtedly improve the mental health of their handlers too. Share a pic below and tell me, what is the single greatest benefit YOUR assistance dog has given you? #capablek9s #assistancedog #servicedog #disability #tasktrained #assistancedogtrainer #servicedogtrainer

24.01.2022 Its time to decorate the tree and hang up your stockings. We here at CapableK9s wish you and yours a very merry Christmas and a happy new year ! We are closing until 6 January 2020 to have some well earned holiday break ourselves. #capablek9s #christmasphoto #santaphoto #borzoi #italiangreyhound #iggy #assistancedog #servicedog #dogtrainer #vacation

24.01.2022 Happy new year!!!! Hopefully with the insanity that was 2020 behind us 2021 will be a better year for us all. Thank you so much for all your patience while I had some much needed time off. My calendar is again open and I’m taking new client applications. However I am getting close to capacity and it has always been my philosophy to provide quality over quantity. CK9 will never be the biggest org in the industry, but I do strive to be the best for my clients. This means I keep my active client list pretty small so I can give each client the time and attention they deserve. I have capacity to take on two more new clients before I will have to start wait listing people in order to maintain that balance. #capablek9s #assistancedog #servicedog

22.01.2022 This months star student is Harry. He has made amazing progress and Im super proud of how hard this team is working on their journey to become a fully certified @capablek9s assistance dog team! #capablek9s #assistancedog #servicedog #intraining #positivereinforcement #dogtrainer #disability #tasktrained

21.01.2022 My Melbourne followers!!!! A client of mine has developed an anaphylactic reaction to cats. This means she has to find a new home for her 11 year old cat Maia. Shes heartbroken and I would love to find a new home for Maia that will be happy to send updates to my client periodically. Maia would be best in a home with no other cats but she is used to living with a dog. Please help me find a great home for her. Microchip 943094320052306. Source number: EE108270

19.01.2022 As there has been a rapid growth in the use of assistance animals over the last decade there has been a vocal minority who want there to be a centralised register of assistance animals and want legislation to replace the Disability Discrimination Act and other state based laws pertaining to assistance animals. This on the surface sounds like a great idea. One stop shop, one uniform ID card, One set of regulations etc. But this is short sighted and overlooks the very reasons the DDA was written as it is. https://www.capablek9s.com.au//po/standardisinglegislation

19.01.2022 Just a note to let you know that for the next week or two I’m closing my calendar and taking some time to do some self care. I can’t give my clients the attention they deserve if I don’t look after my mental health. During this time emails will still be checked but reply times may be longer then you are use to.

18.01.2022 Seems like a good time to restate this post.

16.01.2022 This months star student is Maggie! Maggie and her human have had a rough month or so, Maggie was desexed and needed to recover from her surgery and her mum was having a bit of a hard time with her disability too. Yesterday was the first time we caught up since early September, but despite this these guys had not let their training slip! Their homework was amazing and showed no regression in skills, and as if that’s not impressive enough, yesterday we started task train...ing and Maggie worked really really hard, we struggled a little bit but this amazing team worked through it and we got there in the end! I’m so proud of these girls and it’s now time for me to start getting their public access pack ready because this team will be ready in no time to step out now COVID restrictions are easing! Keep up the good work Maggie! #starstudent #capablek9s #assistancedogintraining #assistancedog #servicedogintraining #servicedog #tasktraining #standardpoodle #soproud #positivereinforcement #positivereinforcementtraining See more

16.01.2022 Just letting clients know I have no access to my phone until Thursday. Please contact me via email until then!

15.01.2022 Capable K9s is excited to be partnering with Coles to provide a partial assistance dog training donation. Capable K9s is now taking application for this donation. The donation from Coles will subsidise the cost for 12 months of Assistance Dog Training. To be eligible for this donation you must be committed to the training program, on a Disability Pension, already own a dog that is suitable for the assistance dog training program and be able to afford the additional costs not covered by this donation. Application packs can be requested by emailing [email protected] Applications for this donation close Aug 29 2020. #assistancedogtraining #servicedogtraining #donation #assistancedog #servicedog #capablek9s

15.01.2022 With Christmas coming I know many people want to include their dogs in gift giving, and whose dog doesnt love treats! However tempting raw hides look, please dont give them to your dogs. None are safe. Because they are non-digesting if your dog swallows a large enough piece it can cause an intestinal blockage too! #capablek9s #christmasgifts #treats #dogtreats

14.01.2022 In the current climate of a global pandemic we need to be thinking about our most at risk members of society. While dogs cant catch COVID 19 it is especially important to remember many Assistance Dog Handlers may be imunocompromised. Please now, more then ever, dont touch working dogs. Remember to wash your hands, dont touch your face, and participate in social distancing however you can. Stay safe, stay healthy. #capablek9s #donttouch #socialdistancing #covd19 #pandemic #coronavirus #assistancedog #servicedog #immunocompromised #invisibledisability #atrisk #staysafe #stayhealthy #publicserviceannouncement

14.01.2022 The reason I have shut down for a week or two is to focus on myself and my currently broken heart. There is no upside when you have to wash your assistance dog in training out. I am currently looking to find the right forever home for my puppy. https://www.capablek9s.com.au/blog/post/washout

13.01.2022 Yesterday the Victorian Capable K9s Crew went on an outing to Melbourne Zoo. A lovely day was had and the zoo was very welcoming.

13.01.2022 Please share this far and wide. Maybe if the public had an understanding of WHY it causes so much harm to take their pets in to places pets should not be, maybe with a little education we might be able to change a few peoples behavior. https://www.capablek9s.com.au/blog/post/petsinshops

12.01.2022 Though the tasks psychiatric assistance dogs do may not be obvious to onlooker the support they provide to their handlers is literally life saving. Many handlers with psychiatric disabilities were so debilitated that they often remained housebound or reliant on a human carer. With their assistance dogs by their side they are able to participate in the community and the tasks such as shopping that other people take for granted. Just because you may not be able to visibly see a persons disability does not mean it is not significantly impacting their lives. #breakthestigma #breakthestigmaofmentalillness #assistancedog #servicedog #capablek9s

12.01.2022 It has been a while since we have run one of these, but its back again with limited places! Register today so you dont miss out! This webinar is a requirement for all Capable K9 Assistance Dog Teams but is open to any handler wishing to get a greater understanding of what the law says and how the law applies,... handler etiquette, rights and responsibilities, how to handle the public and addressing access challenges. 12.01.2022 This is my board and train client for the next 4 weeks. Shadow is training as an assistance dog and this was his very first public access. We did a very quick trip in to Kmart after the main Center was closed so it was not to overwhelming for his first go. Over the next 4 weeks shadow will be building up his public access hours to busier and busier places (especially because it is the silly season) he will also be getting some training about being a good house guest, some pack integration, and building up his ability to politely cohabit the same indoor space as cats. #boardandtrain #assistancedog #servicedog #publicaccesstraining #publicaccess #capablek9s #dogtrainer #positivereinforcement #positivereinforcementdogtraining

11.01.2022 LEPTOSPIROSIS ALERT TO ALL PET-PARENTS IN EASTERN MELBOURNE **Follow this post and share with other local pet-parents for more updated information as we find ou...t more.** **11th Nov Update: We are getting quite a few questions on vaccination. The answer is yes we do offer vaccination. At this stage, we are recommending it on a case by case basis. If you are interested to find out more, please call our hospital & emergency centre on: (03) 8595 6655 between 8am to 8pm.** In the last week we have had a confirmed diagnosis of Leptospira interrogans (italics) serovar Copenhageni in a dog living local to the Maroondah area. Although he and his family fought hard, sadly the dog was extremely unwell due to both liver and kidney failure and unable to be saved. We do not know of other confirmed cases in Eastern Melbourne, however, it is possible that the disease is being seen but not confirmed. ***Leptospirosis can cause severe illness in people, can be lethal in dogs and cats and infect many different mammals. *** Because of the severity of disease this bacteria causes, as well as its ability to spread between people and animals, all cases must be reported to the Department of Agriculture immediately. This bacteria is more commonly seen in the humid conditions of Northern Queensland, and quite rarely seen in the southern states. However, in the past few months, there has been a spike of cases confirmed in central Sydney and now the Bayswater and Maroondah area. At this stage, we have created a brief infographic to help you reduce the risk of exposure to your beloved pet. We sincerely hope we dont see any more cases in the near future. Rest-assured we are surveilling the situation extremely carefully to make sure we keep your pets safe and healthy. We will be updating this post regularly to keep you in the loop. **Please share this post and spread awareness if you know of any pet parents in Eastern Melbourne.** If you want to learn more, please refer to: https://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au//Conditi/Leptospirosis https://www.health.nsw.gov.au//fa/Pages/leptospirosis.aspx Or contact our 24/7 vets on-site vet hospital in Ringwood: (03) 8595 6655 or your local veterinarian.

11.01.2022 Due to poplar demand and the fact that Ive fleshed this webinar out to include even more information it will probably run over the hour scheduled Im increasing the available places to 10 participants. Get your bookings in soon because places are filling fast! This webinar covers your rights and responsibilities as a handler, what the law says and how to meet the legislative requirements, how to deal with the public, how to deal with public access challenges and some important issues about assistance dog safety. It is suitable for handlers with an organisation and also owner trainers who are not affiliated with an organisation.

10.01.2022 Learning to work along side mobility equipment is an important task for this young assistance dog in training. There are many moving parts to make a team cohesive and one of the most important is positioning the dog close enough to the scooter to navigate public spaces, yet not running over their paws. This can take some practice!! #capablek9s #assistancedog #servicedog #mobilityequiptment #training #practicemakesperfect #costco

09.01.2022 This is a very good explanation about why here at CK9 I do not train for restrictive practices and focus on how to best assist the autistic person, not the autistic peoples carers.

08.01.2022 I had a really interesting conversation with my client today and I’ve decided to share it with you. When you have proofed training who are the treats really for at this point in training? Is the handler using them as a security blanket or is it really for the dogs benefit? https://www.capablek9s.com.au/blog/post/treatfree

08.01.2022 Shout out to the super rad handler who spoke up for us tonight at the hospital. Nikki and I got carted off in the ambulance again tonight and are currently sitting in the waiting room at the emergency department of the hospital. There was this older man standing really close to where Nikki and I are sitting just literally starting at Nikki. He was there for ages. I was aware of him, but trying to avoid having to engage. I feel like shit and just want to be left alone. This su...per rad lady comes over and very politely but firmly asks him to stop staring at us and tells him it’s rude. Thankfully because she advocated the man went away. Then not too long after someone stood on Nikki and made him Yelp, then got abusive with me when I suggested she watch where she was going. Super rad handler asked if we were ok and came and sat with us. She didn’t have her AD with her tonight, but at a time when I’m sitting here feeling incredibly unwell it was so lovely to be offered that support by a perfect stranger who gets us/our experience. If you see a handler being intimidated/abused or stared at by another person I can almost certainly assure you that they will appreciate if you speak up. #capablek9s #assistancedog #servicedog #hospital #emergencyroom #ambulancevictoria See more

07.01.2022 Due to personal circumstances CK9 is closed for business this week. I will contact to reschedule all exisiting appointments but Ill be away from all social media and client emails until Dec 7th. Im sorry for the inconvenience.

07.01.2022 If you are thinking about training your assistance dog yourself, here are some key points to be aware of. https://www.capablek9s.com.au/blog/post/owner-trainiing

06.01.2022 Today I had the pleasure of going to visit MornDew Retrievers to do a litter assessment and select an assistance dog candidate puppy for a client.

06.01.2022 After only just posting my pleas to pet owners earlier in the week, this is a true story of the shit we have to deal with.

06.01.2022 I do not care how solid you think your dogs stay is. DO NOT LEAVE IT OUTSIDE A SHOP, ON THE FOOTPATH UNTIED. Myself and my assistance dog In training were just charged by a dog that already tried to have a go at us at the lights. Then the peanut thought he could go in and get bubble tea leaving his dog at the door. This is every assistance dog handlers worst nightmare. My dog was on leash and behaving appropriately until it was growled at and lunged at and charged at by th...is peanuts dog. My 41kg of over excited 10 month old puppy was not easy to contain on my own. Also thanks for nothing to all the pedestrians who stood there and looked at me like I was a moron when I asked for someone to please help me and pick up the loose dogs leash. He didnt even apologise. The training and desensitisation Ill need to do to remedy this situation with my puppy in training is going to be time consuming and things like this can break a working dogs career if it becomes reactive after an attack. Im all for people taking well behaved, well socialised pets out in appropriate spaces when handled appropriately. This man failed to be responsible and I have to pay the price.

05.01.2022 I’m as proud as punch that one of my teams won runner up Top Dog With a Job NZ!!!!!! This team is made of star stuff and so glad they got the public recognition of just how wonderful they are !!!!!!

05.01.2022 So I was sent these adorable photos by one of my teams today and I asked for permission to share them. When I asked I asked if Laura Hinchcliffe would be comfortable to share a review I could post with it, I did not expect this. I literally cried happy tears. This is a genuine, heartfelt review from a real CK9 team. This is what Laura and Maggie had to say: After long, desperate internet searches for anyone who would provide me with a trained assistance dog, I realised that ...Continue reading

05.01.2022 Please guys, Stay home, Stay healthy and keep those most at risk safe!!! I know its hard and inconvenient, but the world needs us to do this right now. #capablek9s #pandemic #covid19 #covid19memes #stayhome

04.01.2022 Today’s post is for those of you who do NOT have an assistance dog. Please, do not take your pet dogs in to pet prohibited places. Even if you get away with it. I don’t care if your dog is being carried, in a bag or pet stroller or just on a leash. When you do this you are not only breaking rules (and in some cases even the law) you are also putting people like me, people who use assistance dogs at unnecessary risk. It takes an incredible amount of training to make sure t...hat an assistance dog is safe and properly behaved in these environments, I promise you, your pet hasn’t got that training and experience. Also should your dog see my assistance dog and bark/growl/yap/lunge at him you are literally putting my life at risk. If he is distracted by your pet that shouldn’t be there anyway and he misses an alert that has very real and very dangerous outcomes for me as his handler. If you choose to leave your dog outside the shop please do not tie it up right near the door. I have to navigate getting in and out of the store with my assistance dog, and I have to assume every unattended tied up dog is a risk to my assistance dog. I don’t know if that dog is going to ignore my assistance dog or try to attack him. When you tie your dog up right near the entryway especially where there is a single door it makes my life harder and is frankly terrifying. Assistance dog handlers appreciate you doing the right thing and being considerate about where you leave your dog if tied up unattended.

04.01.2022 Fresh of the press. My newest blog post. No matter where you are in your assistance dog journey this should be mandatory reading. If youre a new handler it can be hard to think this far ahead, or maybe you are also at the same place with your current dogs retirement looming. Either way, having an assistance dog has a profound effect on your life, and one day they are going to have to hang up the harness this can be a scary and daunting time as a handler trying to plan for your future and there are many emotional factors that come in to play that are not applicable with other disability aids you may use. https://www.capablek9s.com.au/blog/post/successor

02.01.2022 Today I was bested by Miss Josie. She’s 9 weeks old and growing puppies need a lot of sleep. Josie decided she was too sleepy to wake up and train for her lesson today. Not even for bacon or turkey So let sleeping puppies lie and told Joise’s mum we would try again later in the week later in the afternoon. I’m sure later this afternoon she will be up and full of beans but afternoon naps are essential to a healthy puppy’s growth! #capablek9s #labrador #puppy #assistancedog #assistancedogintraining #servicedog #servicedogintraining #positivereinforcement
