25.01.2022 Why do we swing? Well it has everything to do with the vestibular system. The vestibular system provides a foundation for the development of all other sensory systems such as touch, vision, sound and proprioception. It is an important for the following to function optimally: ... central nervous systemdevelopment of balance coordination motor control of the eye bilateral coordination limbic system, which is crucial for the development of further physical, emotional and psychosocial regulation and wellbeing. the cerebellum, combining visual information to enable reflexive eye movements. This is needed for tracking moving objects, scanning, discriminating objects and visual gaze stabilisation. At CCOTS, we aim to ensure children are receiving vestibular experiences to enable them to classify, integrate and process the input through play. This involves activities which include lots of movement such as swinging, jumping on different surfaces, running and rolling over balls. Using visual targets such as throwing a beanbag to a target whilst on a swing is another example of good quality vestibular input. By providing children with these experiences, our therapists aim to change the vestibular element of the central nervous system, utilise neuroplasticity, and enable children to better attend to their everyday functional tasks. #occupationaltherapy #paediatrics

24.01.2022 Today we become multidisciplinary. A huge welcome to Linzi, our talented Speech Pathologist! Welcome to the Team . We’d also like to welcome back all our existing & new families! Term 4 looks so bright!

24.01.2022 If you have a child with a disability, delay, or developmental concern, you have probably heard the words your child needs OT. Depending on your previous experiences, you may or may not know what OT even is. You may be feeling some confusion over why a child would need an occupational therapist, as occupations commonly refer to our primary job or societal role (eg student, parent, caregiver etc). In OT speak however, occupations are the things we do throughout our days and... lives. They may be things we want to do, things we need to do, or things we are expected to do. From getting out of bed, to going to sleep, our days are filled with a variety of occupations we find purpose and meaning in. Our children are no different. Their primary occupation is to play, as this is where they learn and develop a multitude of skills required for personal and social development and engagement. They may also engage in non-play based occupations such as eating, sleeping, toileting, dressing, reading, writing etc. An occupational therapist is a skilled practitioner whose goal is to support occupational participation and engagement. If your child has difficulty engaging in or performing occupations appropriate (or expected) for their age, they may have been referred to an occupational therapist for support. CCOTS is here to assist. We have 3 paediatric OTs and a Speech Pathologist on our team delivering Therapy from our 3 clinic spaces, including 2 x state of the art sensory gyms! WE LOVE KIDS & WE ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT OT & SP

23.01.2022 Mindfulness and relaxation...so what’s the current evidence? A systematic literature review of RCTs of Mindfulness Based Interventions conducted by Dunning et al (2017) reviewed 33 independent studies including 3,666 children and adolescents in random effects metaanalyses with outcome measures categorized into cognitive, behavioural and emotional. Across all RCTs significant positive effects of mindfulness interventions was indicated, having positive outcomes for Mindfuln...ess, Executive Functioning, Attention, Depression, Anxiety/Stress and Negative Behaviour. The findings of this metaanalysis reinforces the efficacy of using Mindfulness Based Interventions for improving the mental health and wellbeing of youth. Therefore, teaching children the practice of mindfulness & relaxation is a life long gift; an investment in their current and distal mental health outcomes #mentalhealthawareness

This is one of the clinical reason why we have so many state of the art hammocks & swings in our clinic.
