25.01.2022 A high pollen count is expected in Canberra throughout the week If you're suffering from allergies, here are a few tips: Download the AusPollen app for your area, or visit https://www.pollenforecast.com.au/. These resources will help you to identify high-risk days and alter your plans if necessary.... Keep the house and car windows closed, and fit the home and car air conditioning systems with an air-filtering system. Remove any plants that trigger your hay fever symptoms. Exercise indoors at an indoor pool or inside a gym, especially on high-pollen days. Your local community pharmacist is available to help you find the right treatment to manage your symptoms. Visit your local Capital Chemist pharmacy today!

18.01.2022 Public Health Alert: Possible thunderstorm asthma event on Saturday 28 November The ACT Health Directorate is warning of the potential for a thunderstorm asthma event in the ACT region on Saturday 28 November 2020. The warning comes as we see elevated pollen levels and the possibility of severe thunderstorms on Saturday, increasing the risk of a thunderstorm asthma event. There is also a possibility that raised dust may impact the ACT on Sunday 29 November due to stron...g and gusty winds. Thunderstorm asthma can be triggered by a combination of high grass pollen levels and a particular type of thunderstorm, which causes some people to develop severe asthma symptoms over a short period of time. The risk of thunderstorm asthma may be increased this year with wetter than usual conditions encouraging grass growth and increased stormy weather in our region. Not all thunderstorms produce an asthma event, and thunderstorm asthma is a rare event. However, people who suffer from hay fever and/or asthma are encouraged to be vigilant over the weekend for any worsening of their condition. People who have been diagnosed with asthma in the past should also be prepared for a thunderstorm asthma event, particularly if they have suffered or continue to suffer from hay fever. Carry a reliever (blue puffer) with you. Where possible avoid being outside during a thunderstorm especially in the wind gusts that come before the storm. Go inside and close your doors and windows. If you have your air conditioning on, turn it onto recirculate. If you develop asthma symptoms, use your reliever (blue puffer) medication and follow your asthma action plan, if you have one. If you experience asthma symptoms that are not relieved by usual asthma treatment, you should seek further urgent medical advice. In the event of a medical emergency you should call 000 See more

16.01.2022 Sometimes, things don’t go according to plan. If you find yourself in this situation, you can speak with one of our trained pharmacists to access emergency contraception (also called the Morning-After Pill). Emergency contraception discussions are private and will take place in a private part of the pharmacy or a consulting room. A female pharmacist is often available if you prefer. The person requiring emergency contraception will need to participate in a confidential interv...iew with the Pharmacist, to ensure that the product is appropriate for them. Emergency contraception is time-critical so don’t hesitate to contact your local Capital Chemist.

11.01.2022 No one likes sweltering in the summer heat, and neither do your medicines. Extreme heat and exposure to light can cause your medicines to physically change. Check your medicine label to ensure you’re storing your medicines correctly. https://www.tga.gov.au/whats-my-medicine-label

11.01.2022 Our 2021 Community Calendars are now available in-store! This year’s calendar is supporting a cause particularly close to our hearts. Australia's black summer of 2019-2020 scorched nearly 20 million hectares, destroyed 6,000 buildings and tragically killed 34 people. The major fires directly affected a dozen Capital Chemist pharmacies and their communities in NSW and ACT.... All of our stores felt the flow-on effect, with thousands of evacuees stranded away from home. With this in mind, we are asking for a gold coin donation for our 2021 Capital Chemist Community Calendar. Your contribution will make its way to a local Rural Fire Service as a thank you to the brave men and women who helped protect us last year.

06.01.2022 ACT Health is warning Canberrans about the potential for a thunderstorm asthma event in the ACT region today (Sunday 22 November) and tomorrow (Monday 23 Novemb...er). The warning comes as we see elevated pollen levels and the possibility of severe thunderstorms over the next two days, increasing the risk of a thunderstorm asthma event. People who suffer from hay fever or asthma are encouraged to be vigilant for any worsening of their condition. Thunderstorm asthma can be sudden, serious and even life threatening for people with asthma or hay fever. Protect yourself, or someone you care for, from risk by: staying indoors with windows and doors closed staying in air-conditioned premises, and if possible, switching the air conditioner to ‘recycle’ or ‘recirculate’ to reduce the amount of dust entering the building avoiding all vigorous exercise, especially if you have a heart or lung conditions If you experience asthma symptoms which are unrelieved by their usual asthma treatment, seek urgent medical advice. In the event of a medical emergency call 000. If it is safe to do so, check on elderly neighbours or people who you think might need extra help. For more information visit health.act.gov.au/public-health-alerts

05.01.2022 Changes to the wording on your prescription from February 1. ‘Active ingredient prescribing’ becomes the norm. So you might see a script or repeat with wording that says ‘esomeprazole’ instead of Nexium, ‘atenolol’ instead of Tenormin, or ‘paracetamol’ instead of Panamax. Active ingredient is another word for generic ingredient. It’s the name of the actual medicine in your prescription. ... This change reduces the chance of errors and mis-communication between episodes of care, between doctors, pharmacists, nurses, hospitals and other health care providers. It’s important to note that the product you are supplied with won’t change; in most cases brand choice rests with you, the patient. For more information, ask your pharmacist or have a quick look at the government’s guide here: https://www.nps.org.au//active-ingredient-prescribing-all-
