21.01.2022 NATIONAL GALLERY OF AUSTRALIA PAYS TRIBUTE TO FORMER DIRECTOR BETTY CHURCHER The National Gallery of Australia is deeply saddened to learn of the death of former Director, Betty Churcher. Betty Churcher is remembered by Gallery staff and volunteers, past and present, as an innovative, passionate and beloved Director, who widened the public appeal of the Gallery, emphasising its role as an institution of cultural significance nationally and internationally.... ‘On this sad day we remember Betty as a passionate promoter of the arts in Australia, who made an enormous contribution to the National Gallery of Australia,’ said Allan Myers, Chairman of the National Gallery of Australia Council. Betty was the National Gallery of Australia’s second Director, from 1990 to 1997. She created large scale, scholarly and popular exhibitions for the NGA with some affectionately referring to her as ‘Betty Blockbuster’. ‘Betty was a towering figure in the Australian art community and loved by so many,’ said Gerard Vaughan, Director of the National Gallery of Australia. ‘She will always be remembered here with deep affection for her tireless promotion of our visual culture, including her role as a popular presenter on TV, and I am reminded daily of her contribution to the nation.’ The National Gallery of Australia extends its condolences to the Churcher family.

21.01.2022 Ghosts and monsters at NFSA Friday the 13th Canberrans will get their scare on at the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia (NFSA) on Friday the 13th of March, with a special ghost tour of its art deco building hosted by Tim the Yowie Man, and a screening of the acclaimed psychological horror film The Babadook. This night of horrors starts at 7pm, with a screening of The Babadook the AACTA Award-winning debut from writer/director Jennifer Kent. It stars Essie Davis ...as a widow raising a son with behavioural problems, and facing the increasingly strange occurrences taking place at her home following the discovery of a macabre children’s book. Then at 9:30pm, join Tim the Yowie Man and NFSA Education Coordinator Tracey Langner for a spooky ghost tour of the NFSA’s headquarters. Formerly the site of the Australian Institute of Anatomy, this 1930 building has been included in several ‘most haunted’ lists. 'The NFSA building is renowned as one of the most haunted buildings in Australia. This intimate tour will bring to life the stories of ghostly apparitions and poltergeist activity experienced by staff past and present, as well as other mysterious stories about the building, from the 1930s to today,’ said Tim. Hear the stories, then grab a torch and enjoy a rare opportunity to visit the NFSA’s basement which housed laboratories used for forensic examinations, and also served as a morgue for some time. The tour will give visitors a unique chance to explore three levels of the building at night if they dare! The ghost tour is limited to 20 places, so book early to avoid disappointment. Once it’s sold out, people will be placed on a waiting list for the next tour later in the year (date to be confirmed). Tim the Yowie Man and Tracey Langner are available for interviews. 19.01.2022 Media Release 21st September 2015 Arts sector celebrates change of Minister... George Brandis has been axed as Arts Minister in yesterday’s ministerialreshuffle. Brandis has been replaced by VictorianSenator Mitch Fifield who will also head up Communications under Malcolm Turnbull’s new ministry. Free the Arts spokesperson Sarah Moynihan said: This is clearly a victory for the arts sector and the Free the Arts campaign, but there is still a lot of work to do. The change of Minister provides the government with the opportunity to fix the mess created by his predecessor before more damage is done and we look forward to working closely with the new Minister. Senator Fifield needs to put an immediate halt to the National Program for Excellence in the Arts (NPEA) and the Book Council and go back and consult with sector leaders. Most importantly Senator Fifield needs to consult with the Australia Council and with his Senate colleagues who have been leading the Senate Inquiry hearings across the country. He also urgently needs to talk with his state and territory colleagues as well as philanthropic sector leaders. The first priority will be to restore the funding stripped from the Australia Council over the last two Federal budgets. If the new minister sees value in the NPEA he needs to heed the universal calls to find new money for it. We also call on him to deliver any new programs and initiatives through the independent, arms length peer reviewed mechanisms provided by the Australia Council. There is an opportunity for the government to restore confidence and respect in the Australia Council and its role as Australia’s arts funding and advisory body and enable Council to get back to implementing its strategic plan." 17.01.2022 CSO Chief Executive Officer to retire at end of 2015 Chair of the Canberra Symphony Orchestra, Air Chief Marshal Sir Angus Houston AK AFC (Ret’d), announced today that the orchestra’s Chief Executive Officer, Henry Laska will retire at the end of December 2015. Sir Angus Houston said Mr Laska had led the organisation since 2007 and had achieved a great deal during his term. Henry has led the CSO for nine years and it is with regret that he has informed me that he will retire... at the end of this 2015 season, Sir Angus said. Since Henry joined the CSO he has provided strong strategic leadership that has positioned the organisation for continued growth in the future. His commitment and dedication has steered the CSO into a position of financial stability and artistic excellence as the orchestra of the nation’s capital. He leaves a strong legacy of achievements which is greatly appreciated by the Board, the management team and the community which the Orchestra serves so proudly. Mr Laska will be missed by the orchestra, his colleagues and subscribers. The CSO wishes him every success in the future. CSO’s Chief Conductor and Artistic Director Dr Nicholas Milton expressed his gratitude and thanks to Henry Laska for the unwavering devotion and the strong leadership he has brought to the role. We’ve been incredibly lucky to have worked with Henry for almost a decade. His energy, enthusiasm and leadership have transformed the organisation and played a major part in positioning the orchestra as among Australia’s most successful, Dr Milton said. Reflecting on his time with the CSO, Mr Laska said his involvement with the CSO had been a thoroughly rewarding and fulfilling one. I have had the privilege to work with Sir Angus Houston and a dedicated Board of Directors, and an exceptional and loyal management team. It has been an honour and a privilege to work closely with Nicholas Milton our inspiring Chief Conductor and Artistic Director, Mr Laska said. We have shared a strong partnership with an effective vision that has seen both the artistic and financial aspects of the organisation develop in a united way, each aware of what is required to develop the organisation in a viable and sustainable way for the future. I look forward to continuing my association with the CSO by joining the growing audience attending concerts and being a passionate advocate and supporter. Sir Angus Houston also announced that, as part of the organisation’s succession plan, the Board was pleased to advise that Sarah Kimball will return to the CSO in the role of Deputy CEO in August 2015 and that she will take over as CEO in January 2016. As the former Corporate Partnerships, Marketing and Events Manager at the CSO for eight years, Sarah has extensive knowledge of the organisation and returns from Melbourne with a wealth of experience to provide the CSO with stability and strong leadership into the future. 08.01.2022 BRICK EXPO RAISES $70,000 FOR CHILDREN AT CANBERRA HOSPITAL A cheque for $70,000 from Canberra Lego enthusiasts to benefit sick children at Canberra Hospital was accepted by Minister for Health Simon Corbell today on behalf of the Canberra Hospital Foundation.... Brick Expo is an annual event, now in its fifth year in Canberra, which attracts Lego enthusiasts of all ages to view unique static, moving and robotic Lego models, monuments and sculptures, Mr Corbell said. Brick Expo also provides an opportunity for the community to support the sick children at Canberra Hospital, with all the event proceeds going towards much needed medical equipment and furnishings for the Paediatrics Unit. The $70,000 raised from Brick Expo 2014 is double the original target of $35,000 and again highlights the generosity of the community. The total amount raised over the past five years from Brick Expo is more than $180,000. The continued generosity and support of the Brick Expo committee is greatly appreciated. This cheque represents the commitment of community and government working together to support the needs of people in Canberra. Half of this year’s donation from Brick Expo will be used to fund a Cosycot, which is a specialised piece of equipment used to safely transport babies from the Emergency Department to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. The remainder of the donation is planned to be used for Lego inspired artworks that will help to create comfortable and non-clinical environments for children and families to enjoy whilst having appointments or treatment in the Paediatrics Unit, Mr Corbell said. It can be a very stressful time for families when their children are unwell, and to be able to create areas where the children feel more relaxed is so vital for their general well-being and recovery. I’d like to thank the Brick Expo Committee for their commitment to organising the 2014 exhibition and for their incredibly generous donation to the Canberra Hospital Foundation. Donations such as this provide practical benefits while allowing Government to focus on the delivery of the core health services that underpin a great public health system.
