24.01.2022 It feels good to be back! While COVID restrictions were in place, we had to move much of our activity online. This impacted several areas of our work, especially the recruitment and training of volunteers. As life slowly returns to normal, Volunteer Coordinator Samantha Haines hosted our first 'in person' Volunteer Information Evening on Tuesday. A new cohort of volunteers will progress to complete our 'Building Bridges' training programme before taking up important volunta...ry positions with CARAD. A huge thanks to Seek Shelter who kindly allowed us use of their beautiful meeting space for the info session. Interested in becoming a volunteer? Check us out https://www.carad.org.au/become-a-volunteer

23.01.2022 A great example of a group putting their compassion into action and helping to solve the pressing issue of social isolation for migrant women. Well done Sister Project

22.01.2022 The recording of the COVID-19 and Detention Webinar our General Manager Joanna Josephs participated in with panelists from the International Detention Coalition, International Committee of the Red Cross and Centre for Vaccine Development and Global Health (University of Maryland), is now online. *See if you catch the moment Jo's cat jumps on screen!

21.01.2022 Check out some footage from Fare Go Food Truck's recent award of an Impact100 WA grant to expand their social enterprise. The next stage in Fare Go's development will be an ambitious contract with Warwick Senior High School to run the school's canteen. The lease will give the business a permanent base and allow for the expansion of the catering and events side of the business. The expansion of Fare Go will allow more people from refugee and asylum seeker backgrounds the oppo...rtunity for self-determination through gainful employment and will ensure more people in Perth get to taste their healthy, delicious food. Have you got any leads for catering opportunities? We'd love to hear from you!

20.01.2022 This week the government is set to vote on a bill that would allow mobile phones to be banned in immigration detention centres. For people seeking asylum in detention, phones are a lifeline - a way to contact loved ones and stay in touch with the outside world. CARAD has distributed more than 150 smart phones to people seeking asylum across Australia and strongly opposes this cruel, antagonistic proposal.... Take action today & call or email your local MP and State Senator. #NoPhoneNoLife

20.01.2022 With Labor voting against the prohibition of items like mobile phones in immigration detention, Senator Jacqui Lambie is now the critical vote in the Senate. Senator Lambie is calling for public consultation via a poll on her website asking 'Should I vote to make the Migration Amendment (Prohibiting Items in Immigration Detention Facilities) Bill 2020 law?' We ask all CARAD supporters take the time to advise the Senator against the proposed Bill. Mobile phones serve myriad es...sential functions for detainees, including allowing them to: - Communicate with loved ones within and beyond Australia - Coordinate visit times with local supporters - Correspond with legal professionals, including via email - Learn English and translate documents or conversations - Access personal photographs - Access medical advice - View entertainment, including movies and exercise videos - Read news from Australia and abroad - Document abuses or safety concerns within the centres and - Have a voice and a face in the public sphere The proposed Bill is an unnecessary overreach that will add more cruelty to an already punitive system. It's important we rally to prevent its passing.

18.01.2022 Huge shortages exist in our country's regional workforce and in other critical industries such as horticulture, aged care, meat production, child care and cleaning. An opportunity is being explored for a new initiative to provide people on temporary protection visas with a permanent visa if they complete 1 year of work in a critical industry to help in the Covid-19 recovery. What do you think about the proposal?

17.01.2022 This latest proposal is truly outrageous. Under the proposal, anyone that is convicted of an offence that could in theory warrant a 2 year prison sentence, will automatically fail the 'character test' and face detention or deportation. Let's play that out: - Person X is convicted of an offence that *could* warrant a 2 year prison sentence... - A judge examines the evidence and decides that in fact, this offence was not serious enough to warrant a 2 year prison sentence, and the appropriate punishment is a fine or community based order - The Minister can ignore the judge's discretion and cancel Person X's visa, detain them and deport them back to a country they fled as a refugee, on the basis of a theoretical sentence that was not given to them. Worse Still: The minister is also taking into account overseas convictions. So if you are a refugee fleeing an oppressive regime, a dubious conviction in your home country can put you at risk of being deported back into the hands of those you are fleeing. Get informed on the issues being debated in the senate and let your local senator know how strongly you oppose the proposals being debated.

17.01.2022 A hard hitting article from journalist and detainee Behrouz Boochani.

15.01.2022 We had a very special outing last week to see the New Museum of WA - Boola Bardip. CARAD is extremely proud to have collaborated on the "Journeys" project which features as a permanent fixtures in the "Connections Gallery." "Journeys" explores the perspectives of six residents of Perth, Western Australia and what it means for them to seek refuge in a place outside their country of origin. Seeing the final portraits and short films that emerged as a result of project participants telling their stories in the way they wanted them to be shared, was a powerful and moving experience that can now be shared with the Western Australian community for many years to come.

14.01.2022 Always great to be able to add something extra to our Foodbank deliveries! Thanks to a well connected donor we gave out brand new ASICS running shoes today

14.01.2022 Good vibes to start your Thursday When Frances, a volunteer tutor through our Opening Doors program, mentioned that her young Syrian student missed learning guitar having had to leave without her instrument - Samantha put the call out to our network and was amazed to hear a generous lady offered to purchase a brand new guitar for her. Pictured is the student in question having received their new guitar. We hope to hear her play at a CARAD event in the future!... Well done to all and a special thanks to the generous donor who wishes to remain anonymous.

13.01.2022 A HUGE win for WA's Asylum Seeker community To all our members, donors, and supporters thank you so much for enabling us to be able to do this valuable advocacy Check out the good news:... Earlier this month, CARAD confirmed that the WA Health Department has made a change that, effective from 01 August 2020, Medicare ineligible people seeking asylum in WA are to be non-chargeable for public hospital treatment. This is the result of some intensive advocacy that our Client Services Manager, Esther, along with the WA Refugee and People Seeking Asylum Network (WARPSAN) and many others have been working on since early last year. Already we have seen three clients without Medicare who were in need of urgent hospital treatment now able to receive treatment without having to worry about huge hospital fees and how they would ever be able to repay them. This is a particularly heavy burden when the majority of them are without work rights and/or any income to repay such a debt that has the potential to impact any protection visa being issued to them. This is a hugely welcome change as CARAD has seen around 30% of people seeking asylum here in WA without Medicare eligibility. A significant portion of the complex case work the Client Services Team has supported clients with is in advocating for people in this situation to be able to access hospital treatment such as urgent surgery, 3rd degree burn treatment, various child development therapies, crucial diagnostic investigations for life-threatening conditions, treatment for communicable diseases, and also apply for fee waivers once they have accessed these things. A special thanks to all the numerous advocates who assisted in making this change happen. This could not have been achieved without all of you.

08.01.2022 Important changes have been made to the SHEV Permanent Pathway Requirement in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. RACS - Refugee Advice and Casework Service have issued the following factsheet detailing the changes.

07.01.2022 *Urgent Food Appeal - Please Share* The COVID pandemic continues to have devastating consequences on many people from refugee and asylum seeker backgrounds. Unemployment, with no support from government, is seeing a sharp rise in the demand for food support. After packing next week’s pantry packs, our cupboard is in desperate need of restocking. We urgently need donations of the items listed below.... Donations can be dropped off to the CARAD office, 245 Stirling Street, Perth, Monday and Tuesday from 9am to 12 noon. Please share to ensure nobody in our community goes hungry.

06.01.2022 Encouraging to see the courts order the government to act on the much reported on risk of COVID-19 in detention. This ruling makes it clear that it is not possible to ensure the safety of vulnerable detainees. We're watching closely to see if the the man in question will be released into the community and are hoping this will pave the way for further releases.

06.01.2022 How good is this! Mar Knox is a CARAD Community Engagement Volunteer who delivers presentations to schools, corporate and community groups raising awareness of the issues facing our clients and engaging people to support our work. Pictured is Mar delivering a presentation to the Year 7's at Morley Senior High School. We received a fantastic note of thanks from the school yesterday;... "I can't thank you enough for your amazing presentation and for taking the time to help our students engage with such an important issue. They really enjoyed the presentation, and felt like they were treated as adults. Thank you so much." If you'd like us to present at your school, workplace or community group get in touch and we'll make it happen. Many thanks to Mar and all our amazing volunteers for your hard work and dedication

04.01.2022 Zaki is an extraordinary marathon runner and refugee advocate who fled Afghanistan 7 years ago. Despite being found to be a refugee he has only been given a 5 year protection visa, keeping him in a constant limbo, separated from his loved ones and unable to plan for his future. "I am 25- years-old. I can't plan my life in five years time, or even next year. My visa runs out next year and I don't know what will be next for me."

03.01.2022 Every single day security used to watch me, she says. I was sick of the rule of Serco [the company that manages Australia’s onshore immigration detention facilities], so when I get freedom it feels like I can breathe. Just breathe. Now I feel relief. I can eat what I want; I wear what I want; I can talk to who I want. I can walk free.

03.01.2022 Perth engineer Yuot A. Alaak's memoir, detailing his treachorous journey to safety during the second Sudanese Civil War, is a must read and an incredible tribute to his hero father. "For four years and hundreds of kilometres, he led them and other refugees across Ethiopia and Sudan to the relative safety of Kakuma refugee camp in Kenya, enduring starvation, attacks by lions, hyenas and crocodiles, aerial bombing, disease and drowning." You can purchase Father of the Lost Boy...s here: https://bit.ly/33SMQO2 The book is also available at City of Perth Library

03.01.2022 RIP Mercy Baguma. We are seeing an overwhelming demand for food assistance in Perth. In your city - there are people that would be left homeless and hungry if it wasn't for the intervention of charities. At the extreme, this is what happens when a Government's social security does not extend to all in the community. A shocking case of negligence that could easily be seen in our country if policy does not change....
