22.01.2022 As the owner of a home care business I often advise and encourage people to investigate and choose a home based care company in preference to moving themselves, their client or family member into an aged care facility. I recommend to do this if it is at all possible. Naturally this appears to be biased advice, so I would like to tease out a few of the pragmatic and logical reasons for this opinion. Be aware that this series of articles is based on numbers sourced from Gov...ernment published articles and websites. This week - Staffing The ANMF (Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation) have been running a campaign to bring in mandatory nursing ratios, such as exist in our childcare and kindergarten system. Currently there are NO MINIMUM MANDATORY STAFFING LEVELS in aged care. There figures quote an average of 2.86 hours per day of personal care per client on average across all aged care facilities in Australia. The for- profit sector which runs 1200 facilities uses a business model that seek to reign in the largest expenses wages. Hence, patient contact time in these 1200 odd facilities are lower. 40% of new care staff hired in the aged care industry are from CALD (predominately Philippines and India) and non-English speaking backgrounds. Anecdotally I am told that during a standard morning split-shift from 6am-8am a carer is rostered on for between 8 to 15 clients and expected to get them awake, showered, dressed and into the dining room for breakfast. That means an average of 8 - 15 minutes, not counting clients who are difficult or two person or hoist assists. So your normal confused, frail and vulnerable client is woken in a flurry of action at a time not of their choosing by staff who, of the time, come from cultural and linguistically different backgrounds to be deposited in a room to await breakfast. To summarise; your carers whilst you are in aged care will have the best intentions and will try their best to satisfy your needs, but will not be permitted to do so by the rostering structures that prioritise ROI over your quality of life.

19.01.2022 Here at Caregivers we like to think that we can treat you in the same way that your own dog would. We are always happy to see you. We are comfortable to just wait and see what you want. We won't badger you to do anything that you don't want.... It's just our way to remind you that you are better off staying at home with your old familiar things rather than taking the plunge to move into a retirement facility. Caregivers is as comforting and relaxing as the companionship of an old dog.

16.01.2022 Caregivers endorses this message: MONEY does buy you comfort and happiness as you age and require more help to enjoy the time you have left.

15.01.2022 Just listening to the thought provoking speech from Kristina Keneally on the changes coming from the implementation of the NDIS. There is a such a need for vision in implementing the services required to make a genuine difference in the lives of our clients. I'm loving the APNS conference.

14.01.2022 Just off to a four day conference in Sydney about industry best practise. Lots to still learn and implement.

12.01.2022 Isn't it sad and unfortunate that we need to be vigilant and thoughtful on behalf of those who have done so much for us when we needed them.

11.01.2022 http://www.sbs.com.au/news/insight/tvepisode/old-question Please do yourself a favour and catch up on the SBS Insight program from Tuesday night this week. A very moving look at the situation that many of us are dealing with now for our own parents, and that eventually we will have to deal with for ourselves and our partners.

10.01.2022 It is becoming unfortunately common to hear reports like this. There are weeks where I have more than one conversation with people who feel exposed to being taken advantage off. About time the various Government and quasi-Government organizations started taking positive action to measure the extend of the issue.

06.01.2022 Welcome to the Caregivers page where we will passing on tips and hints on the ways to provide quality support to you on dealing with your elderly parents.

05.01.2022 For those of you who may not appreciate what goes into providing a personalized home care service, it is the many little things that our team members do that make the difference for our wonderful clients. Snoopy has been visiting clients since 2007. Truthfully not all clients appreciated the intrusion of a 22kg affection monster. However Snoopy is a (partially) trained assistance dog - he did wash out of and hence fail, the assistance dog training course. I acquired him f...rom a disabled young man when their partnership wasn't working out so well. He does have remnants of his training still around - watching him around disabled kids is a real joy for me. Ultimately, having my dog visit with me distracts and entertains our clients, allowing me to check up on the paperwork and generally inspect the cleanliness and overall conditions that we create for our clients and carers in the homes we work in. I like to think that it helps the families of our clients feel that we are doing our best when the owner of the company visits regularly to make sure all the "eyes are dotted and the tees' are crossed" as my granddad used to say. Snoop is nearer to retirement than most of us. I am not sure who will fill his very large paw prints when he is no longer on the road with me.
