25.01.2022 ... of course, there was no warning of this potential situation.... https://www.theguardian.com//former-fire-chiefs-warn-austr

23.01.2022 We are currently working out protocols and hope to be reopening for tours by the beginning of September. Updates will be posted here as issues are sorted out so watch this space!

22.01.2022 WAKE UP PEOPLE! Wee Jasper is closed! No camping, no food, no fish, no caves. Stay home for Easter!

22.01.2022 To put the situation in Wee Jasper in context : Wee Jasper is a very popular camping destination because of the very nature of the campgrounds - it also means that numbers cannot be controlled. In fact, the only limiting factor is when there is no room to pitch another tent. Because most of the campers are regulars they know how things work, are very respectful and there is rarely any trouble. The weekend before the closures there were heaps of campers from Canberra who had n...ever been here before and came because most of Canberra was shut down and they wanted to go out somewhere . When asked why they had decided to come at this time, some of the younger ones said it was because the pubs were closed and this was the only place they could get together to drink. With the coast shut down, where else can people go to camp that is relatively close? At Easter (our heaviest traffic time of the year) we have at least 1500 people camping each night (concentrated mainly in 3 campgrounds) and in some places the tents are wall to wall. If people know they can camp here the situation would be intolerable to manage: fees to collect, toilets and showers to service, not to mention physical distancing. Only a couple of rangers to deal with 5 campgrounds over a 14 km spread in the valley, so do the maths. It is not just the odd couple of campers who may be very aware and keep to themselves. Don't get me wrong - we welcome visitors under normal circumstances, and we handle the Easter influx as it only lasts for a few days of the year. The rest of the time it is nowhere near as concentrated. But we are not in normal times at present, and whilst Wee Jasper is not a cruise ship, any potential form of concentration could be catastrophic. And don't forget that 50% of the population is below average IQ! See more

20.01.2022 I think this says it all ....

18.01.2022 We are conducting tours on Sunday 22 March. Closed during the week due to mains power maintenance work.

18.01.2022 PLEASE NOTE: DUE TO THE PREDICTED CATASTROPHIC WEATHER CONDITIONS IN THE AREA WE SHALL BE CLOSED ON SATURDAY 21 DECEMBER. WE EXPECT TO BE OPEN ON SUNDAY.

18.01.2022 Unfortunately we shall not be open for the June long weekend. The distancing issue is still difficult, plus the decontamination aspect of restrooms, handrails, seating etc will be problematic for a while yet. We are watching to see how everything unrolls generally with lifting of restrictions.

17.01.2022 Grand Designs Australia is currently covering building of an underground house in Canberra. GD spent time today shooting introductory/background footage in Careys Cave. Our 30 seconds of fame (which took about 3 hours to shoot) will go to air round about August this year. The crew were great - good to be involved in the project!

16.01.2022 Unfortunately we will be closed on Friday 29 June due to unforeseen circumstances. Open on weekend.

14.01.2022 We have had a great response to the new format of our tours since reopening! We are still maintaining Covid precautions of mask-wearing, hand sanitation and restricted group size, however people are enjoying the different way our tours work. Bookings are advisable to avoid disappointment and the best way to do this is via email or calling 6227 9622. Wee Jasper is looking glorious after the recent rain and is a great destination for a day trip

12.01.2022 Yes folks - we are open tomorrow for Australia Day with tours at 12.00, 1.30 and 3.00 pm. 15degC underground!

11.01.2022 All other NSW tour caves are now closed due to bushfire damage or COVID-19, leaving thousands of hopeful cave visitors with Wee Jasper as their only option. We have all witnessed the slide into social disharmony demonstrated in the Great Toilet Roll Crisis, so we feel it would be unfair for our staff to have to handle the potential biffo resulting from all these visitors vying for tour places. We are therefore closing temporarily until all return to their senses, hopefully sooner than projected. Stay safe.

10.01.2022 A somewhat long article but most relevant commentary. Dr Kevin Kiernan is a geomorphologist with more than 40 years’ experience in researching the history of ice ages in Tasmania and the natural climate changes that drove them. He has experienced the loss of his own home in a bushfire and was captain of the Smokewalkers of Tasmania Rural Fire Brigade that was formed in the 1970s to combat wildfires in remote areas. That the smo...Continue reading
