21.01.2022 When was the last time your vitamin D was tested? I find that a lot of my patients have low vitamin D levels. Research on vitamin D has increased by more than 900% the past few decades and last year 4000 research papers have been written about the benefits of vitamin D.... Vitamin D plays a key role in our health - for optimal health and to support disease. Some of its key actions are: Increases gut absorption of calcium playing an important role in remineralisation and healthy bone density Supports leaky gut by regulating the tight junctions of our intestinal wall Regulates composition and function of the bacterial community in the gut Helps relieve atopic eczema by regulating the immune system and reducing inflammation Supports cognitive health deficiency in vitamin D may result in neuronal degeneration and has been associated with cognitive decline and degenerative brain disease in the elderly It is a potent immune regulator and supports autoimmune disease. A study from Science Daily: Professor Richard Mellanby, of the University of Edinburghs Centre for Inflammation Research, said: "Low vitamin D status has long being implicated as a significant risk factor for the development of several autoimmune diseases. Essential nutrient in supporting fertility it influences the production and development of sperm cells in men, egg cell and uterine lining growth in women, and sex hormone production in both male and female Click on the link below to read my blog for more information! https://naturalhealth.net.au//vitamin-d-essential-for-opt/

21.01.2022 If you think of how energy is produced and delivered in your body - think of your body as a car. I will give you examples of just a few of the parts I will cover in the coming weeks: The engine is our mitochondria ... The fuel comes from our gut health and diet Oxygen comes from our lungs The accelerator pedal is our thyroid gland The gear box is our adrenal gland Service and repair is our sleep.. I am currently doing a post-graduate course in the Mitochondria and this comparison to the car that I use in this post is courtesy to Dr Sarah Myhill who is doing a few of the lectures in the course. When I looked at this analogy it resonated so much with me as this is the holistic view that you need when dealing chronic fatigue. Contact me for an appointment, I also do Skype consultations. #chronicfatiguesyndrome #adrenalfatigue #adrenalglands #hypothyroidism #hashimotosdisease #fatigue #mitochondria #holistichealth #brisbanenaturopath

20.01.2022 Are you feeling chronically tired? I recently listened to a webinar on Chronic Fatigue and the importance of the Mitochondria (more on this later). What really resonated with me during this talk is the importance of getting back to the basics in our lifestyle as I always talk about this when I see my patients. . Perhaps today, check on yourself and see what you do to support yourself physically and mentally to get through your day and week.... Consider the following: Do you sleep enough (you need 7-9 hours) and is it a good quality sleep? Is your diet fresh, wholesome and free of preservatives? Do you manage to do some exercise? How do you deal with your stress levels? Do you get time to relax and do things that make you happy? Reach out today if you need support

19.01.2022 With the new year in full swing and the children back at school, life can be a quite hectic for many of us. I want to remind you of the value of breathing and how it can, just in a few minutes, help reset our nervous systems. And the best of all its free! Diaphragmatic breathing activates the parasympathetic nervous system. This is the nervous system that brings us back to our rest, digest and healing state. The diaphragm is a big dome-shaped muscle that sits underneat...h the lungs and separates your chest from your abdomen. When you inhale, the diaphragm moves downward, causing your belly to expand and create more space for your lungs to fill up completely with air. When you exhale, the diaphragm moves upward, driving air out of your lungs while your belly flattens. Deep, diaphragmatic breathing has shown so many benefits. It helps to relieve anxiety and depression, soothes the nervous system, relaxes our muscles and helps improve our cognitive performance. Relaxing breathing can also lower heartbeat and stabilise blood pressure. So start breathing! Below are some steps you can take to practice diaphragmatic breathing: Sit or lie comfortably and close your eyes. Appreciate the solid support of the chair, floor or bed. Place one hand on your chest and one hand on your belly. Breathe slowly in while counting to 3 or 4 and focus on taking that breath to your belly so that the hand on your belly lifts and the hand on your chest remains still. Relax your shoulders while doing this. Breathe slowly out, count to 4 or 5 and feel your belly being drawn back in. Do this for a few breaths, enjoy the moment of stillness and cherish the feeling of grounding it gives you. Make this a routine so that you can practice this valuable way of resetting your nervous system. The more you practice it, the easier it will become and the more you will find the value in it. :-) #holistichealth #anxiety #brisbanenaturopath #gumdale #emotionalwellbeing #hecticday

17.01.2022 Are you deficient in Magnesium? Magnesium is a supplement I regularly recommend in my practice. It plays such an important role to soothe your nervous system and support energy production. I realised this weekend, after a night of restless legs, that I havent taken my Magnesium for a while, and again appreciated the benefits of it! It is not so nice to have difficulty to fall asleep when your legs want to move constantly.... Here are the most common signs associated with Magnesium deficiency: Fatigue Anxiety Muscle cramps Fibromyalgia Restless legs Pre-menstrual symptoms Menstrual cramps Headaches Sugar cravings Hypertension Do you have any of these symptoms? 16.01.2022 In recent years, Turmeric has been promoted from just a humble ingredient in curry dishes, to taking its place on the menu of most hipster cafes and on the priority order list of natural health practitioners. 15.01.2022 We are currently living in quite an unsure time in light of the spread of the COVID-19 virus, affecting many peoples livelihood, jobs and health. What can you control? How can you protect yourself and your family? While this must be frightening for us all, there is a lot that you can do to protect your health and support your immune system. Look after yourself by:... Eating healthy, wholesome and nutritious meals. Vegetables, nuts and seeds are high in important nutrients that we need right now, such as vitamin C, Zinc and vitamin A. Make soups, stews, stir fry, poke bowls - this way you can mix a combination of tasty veggies. Also add garlic, ginger and turmeric to these dishes for additional immune support. Avoid fast food, sugar and processed foods. Sugar feeds pathogens like bacteria and viruses. Have good and sufficient sleep at night - poor sleep can play a role in depleting the immune system. See my blog, https://naturalhealth.net.au//the-importance-of-sleep-imp/, on some tips on improving your sleep. Consider how you manage your stress (stress weakens the immune system) and prioritise caring for yourself and making time to relax and recharge. Stay hydrated. Continue to exercise - do what you feel is good for your body. Go for long walks! Moderate exercise plays a role in enhancing your immune system. If you do get flu-like symptoms like fever, body aches, sore throat and a cough stop strenuous exercise as your body then needs the rest to help it recover. I offer short video consults for acute care and individualised advice on immune support to help you look after yourself and your family. Please reach out if you need further advice. Also keep an eye out for more posts on immune support in the coming days. Look after yourself!

14.01.2022 What is Natural Health? Natural Health is a holistic approach to wellness. We take into consideration the fact that every humans body functions differently than one another, and therefore we do not believe in a one-size-fits-all approach to treatment. Naturopaths consider a variety of therapies, not just modern medicine. Our goal is to leverage the bodys natural ability to heal itself, combined with scientific analysis, modern medicine, herbal and traditional therapies. Carine Pieterse practices Natural Health in Brisbane, Australia, and offers virtual consultations to patients around the world from the comfort of their own homes. 12.01.2022 It has now become even more crucial to save our water with the raging fires the past few months and the devastating loss of animals, insects and trees. A lot of us feel desperate and helpless when we see and read about this devastation but this quote is so helpful; Just as ripples spread out when a single pebble is dropped into water, the actions of individuals can have far-reaching effects, by Dalai Lama.... Here are just a few easy ways to start to make a small change in your home: Wait until your dishwasher or washing machine is fully loaded before you turn it on. Turn off the tap while you brush your teeth or shave. Wash your vegetables and rinse dishes in a plugged sink or basin not under a running tap. Or you can wash it over a bowl to catch up the water and use that water for your pot plants Let water that you used for cooking cool down and use for plants Fix any leaky taps (we have one of those!) Install low-flow showerheads If you have more helpful ideas, please add to comments

08.01.2022 What fuelled your passion? My passion for healing and helping people with health related issues was stirred at an early age through my grandmothers love for natural medicine. She had a store on her farm in rural South Africa to assist local families and farm workers with their common ailments. ... From a childhood interest into my lifes passion and career, my mission is to help you to reach your goals towards optimal, symptom free health. 07.01.2022 A simple and almost zero-cost way to play your part in reducing the spread of the viruses, as well as the coronavirus - COVID-19, is by washing your hands regularly. Researchers examined how often people wash their hands at airports and discovered that only 20% of the people actually had clean hands and only 70% wash their hands after being at the toilet . The study shows that if the percentage of people with clean hands increase 20 to 60 percent it could reduce the global ...spread of disease by 70 percent! Here are the steps for thorough hand washing taken from the CDC (Centres for disease control and prevention): 1. Wet your hands with clean, running water (warm or cold), turn off the tap, and apply soap. 2. Lather your hands by rubbing them together with the soap. Lather the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails. 3. Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds. Need a timer? Hum the Happy Birthday song (or another short song of your choice ) from beginning to end twice. 4. Rinse your hands well under clean, running water. 5. Dry your hands using a clean towel or air dry them

03.01.2022 Are you getting enough Vitamin C during the flu season? Vitamin C is usually the first supplement we grab when we start to get sick and for good reason! It plays an important role in increasing your resistance to infection as it supports your Natural Killer cell and white blood cell activity, as well as having an anti-viral and anti-bacterial effect. ... Vitamin C also has other essential actions in the body, such as: Supporting your adrenal glands to produce our stress hormone cortisol. This is the hormone that can get depleted after long periods of stress Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant by helping to reduce the risk of damage to your cells Vitamin C also helps regenerate other antioxidants such as vitamin E and glutathione It has a natural antihistamine effect so can be helpful to take if you are suffering from allergies Vitamin C helps to repair your skin; it is an essential cofactor for the synthesis of collagen and can significantly speed up the rate of wound healing. It helps with improved iron absorption. It is important to take a buffered form of vitamin C to minimise irritation to your digestive system and its helpful if combined with a flavonoid to enhance absorption so that you can get optimal therapeutic value from the dosage. Another option is a Liposomal Vitamin C which gets absorbed by our oral mucous membranes and bypasses the digestive tract. Some foods that are high in vitamin C are: 1. Bell peppers 2. Strawberries 3. Oranges 4. Guavas 5. Broccoli 6. Kiwi fruit 7. Kale 8. Snow peas Reach out today to enquire #naturalingredient #flavonoids #naturopathicnutrition #lookingafteryourself #nutrientrich #foodisthymedicine #functionalhealth #fresheating #realfoodheals #healthytastesgood #healingdiet #livelifeontheveg #healthful #fruitandvegetables #nutritionlife #allthegoodness #healthybreak #clinicalnutrition #fluseason #goodforyourhealth See more

02.01.2022 "You have 2 homes... your body & Earth. Take care of them." What conscious decisions do you make to look after your body? What do you do to take care of the Earth?... Each of us can make small changes and conscious decisions every day which contribute to a positive future, not just for you, but also for Mother Earth. Things are some of the things I am doing: picking up plastic waste on our walks with our Husky using green cleaning products for our household recycling hard and soft plastic avoiding use of plastic as much as I can using bees wax sheets to cover my dishes in the fridge or store some of my veggies, instead of using glad wrap plastic always trying my best to remember to take my reusable bags when I do grocery or other shopping :-) not using any chemicals or poison in the garden (yes pulling out the weeds is quite a job!) considering plants in our garden to support our bees Id love to hear about the daily decisions you make to take care of yourself or our marvellous planet below #lookaftertheearth #earthmatters #theresnoplanetb #ecofriendly #makeecodecisions #greenerliving #looingaftertheearth #lookingafteryourself #livenaturally #naturopathy #naturopathicnutrition #functionalhealth #fresheating #realfoodheals #healthytastesgood #healingdiet #livelifeontheveg #healthful #nutritionlife #allthegoodness #healthybreak #clinicalnutrition #brisbanenaturopath

Are you suffering from anxiety, insomnia, or a depressive mood? You feel overwhelmed with your daily responsibilities Youve noticed that you are starting to develop issues with your immune system where you are getting sick more frequently Or are developing an increased tendency to allergies?
