22.01.2022 So many of us are unable to access our favorite Library books and other resources- we recommend these lectures by UWA's Associate Professor John Kinder- a very entertaining and learned series from our friends over on the West Coast this is an exciting new initiative of the Dawson Society for Philosophy and Culture. It is a generous series for our locked down days and nights!

22.01.2022 As you all know, most of our public institutions are being closed due to the spread of the coronavirus COVID-19. Because of the risk of infection by the coronavirus, and to keep our members and volunteers safe, the Committee has decided to close physical access to the Library premises until further notice. This decision is effective immediately, and includes both members and volunteers. You may receive automated reminders about overdue books from time to time, but you should ...ignore due dates until the Library reopens. The situation will be reviewed regularly, in the light of advice from the medical profession and government. We will inform members and supporters of the situation by email and post as appropriate. Our work of nourishing faith and culture is not stopping in this time of isolation and deprivation. We plan to increase our online support of our members and supporters, and also increase our postal communications for those without internet access. Further details to follow. If you have any questions, please email [email protected], or call 0411 483 494. God bless you, and stay well! The Committee

19.01.2022 A message from the Pope: "Dear brothers and sisters, In these trying days, while humanity trembles due to the threat of the pandemic, I would like to propose to all Christians that together we lift our voices towards Heaven. I invite all the Heads of the Churches and the leaders of every Christian community, together with all Christian of the various confessions, to invoke the Almighty, the omnipotent God, to recite at the same time the prayer that Jesus, our Lord, taught us.... I, therefore, invite everyone to do this several times a day, but all together, to recite the Our Father this coming Wednesday, 25 March, at noon, all together. On that day on which many Christians recall the annunciation to the Virgin Mary of the Incarnation of the Word, may the Lord listen to the united prayer of all of His disciples who are preparing themselves to celebrate the victory of the Risen Christ. With this same intention, this coming Friday, 27 March, at 6:00 pm, I will preside over a moment of prayer on the sagrata of Saint Peter’s Basilica, before the empty square. I invite everyone to participate spiritually through the means of communication. We will listen to the Word of God, we will lift up our supplication, we will adore the Blessed Sacrament, with which at the end, I will give the Urbi et Orbi blessing, to which will be connected the possibility of receiving the plenary indulgence. To the pandemic caused by the virus, we want to respond with the universality of prayer, of compassion, of tenderness. Let us remain united. Let us make our closeness felt toward those persons who are the most lonely and tried. Our closeness to the doctors, the healthcare workers, nurses, volunteers Our closeness to the authorities who must impose stringent measures, but for our own good. Our closeness to the police, to the soldiers who try always to keep order on the streets, to ensure that the things the government asks to be done for the good of all are implemented. Closeness to all. Pope Francis

14.01.2022 Vale Fr Paul Mankowski S.J. (1953- 3rd August, 2020) The Caroline Chisholm Library community joins many in prayer and sorrow at the news of the sudden death of Fr Paul Mankowski S.J. this week. To call him an outstanding and incisive man of letters would be to radically understate the man. At the time of his sudden death, Fr Mankowski, had been Scholar-in-Residence at the Lumen Christi Institute augmenting the courses at the University of Chicago and offering popular class...es in scripture, ethics and the humanities. He was born in South Bend Indiana, then a steel-manufacturing centre. He never lost his respect for the working man or woman. His adult life was one of outstanding academic, he gained a M.A. from Oxford and a PhD in Semitic Philology from Harvard University. He was a lecturer for many years at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome but was most well known for his many sharply crafted articles on literature, language and the life of the Church. Most will remember him as an outstanding priest, whose devotion to the faith and to the Catholic Church was both clear-eyed and outspoken. In 2003 he delivered a memorable lunchtime talk which was given to a full-house at the Caroline Chisholm Library : Catholic Liturgy and the Language of Worship https://www.cclibrary.org.au//catholic-liturgy-and-languag
