20.01.2022 Construction is underway on a series of small limestone reefs in Oyster Harbour near Albany, which will provide habitat for native Australian flat oysters - a t...hreatened species. Oyster spat to stock the new reef are currently being grown at Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development - DPIRD's Albany Shellfish Hatchery. Once established, the living oyster reefs are expected to improve aquatic biodiversity and water quality within Oyster Harbour, and provide habitat for popular recreational fishing species like whiting, bream and snapper. The project is being led by The Nature Conservancy with WA Government funding and support from Recfishwest, UWA, the Great Southern Development Commission and South Coast NRM groups. 05.01.2022 The tender for the new $1 million dollar northern metro artificial reef project, to be installed off Ocean Reef Marina, has been released. The reef will create... good recreational fishing and diving opportunities on the metro doorstep and is expected to become home to a range of fish species including samson fish (like the one pictured on the Dunsborough artificial reef), silver trevally, pink snapper and breaksea cod. The tender - open until July 5 - is for its design, construction and installation, which is planned take place in early 2020.
