25.01.2022 Meet the master mimic of the Australian bush, the Superb Lyrebird. Filmed from the boardwalk at Scenic World Blue Mountains. Lyrebirds are often seen on Katoomba trails, early mornings (as in this video) or evenings. Interestingly, male lyrebirds learn their song, not from the sounds around them, but from other male lyrebirds. The erroneous belief that they imitate man-made sounds is now widely accepted. Thanks, in part, to Sir David Attenboroughs film of Chook, a captive ...lyrebird who had learnt to mimic construction sounds, car alarms and the human voice. There is also the case of a lyrebird raised in a 1920s flute playing household who passed the call onto the lyrebirds of the New England Tablelands. To the human ear lyrebirds display call can sound mechanical, how many can you hear in this video? 24.01.2022 This is the equivalent of finding a small dinosaur alive on earth. So said then director of the The Royal Botanic Garden, Sydney, Professor Carrick Chambers in 1994 when the Wollemi pine was discovered. 10.01.2022 "Sometimes you need quiet in which to breathe, trust, let go and see what happens." Anon The Tomah Suite is the perfect place to find that quiet, nestled in the back corner of the Third Floor, when you close the door you feel as if all the noise is another world away. The suite is named for its views of Mt Tomah to the north. Tomah is believed to be the Dharug peoples word for the tree ferns that proliferate in that area, now home to the Blue Mountains Botanic Gardens... Recent renovations have created a fresh, textured feel to this spacious two room suite. Featuring distinctive blue pressed metal walls, ornately detailed plaster cornices and a bathroom to die for! Lie back on your comfy bed, luxuriate in the deep bath or in the huge double shower and gaze out into the reflective distant views. 08.01.2022 "...a pilot and an aviator. One is a technician; the other is an artist in love with flight." Elrey Borge Jeppesen In the 1920s & 30s aviator/artists were feted like rock stars, mobbed by their adoring public wherever they went including, during historic visits to The Carrington by two of the greatest, Amy Johnson and Bert Hinkler.... Amy Johnson, at only 26, the first woman to fly solo from England to Australia in 1930 and Bert Hinkler, first person (and an Australian!) to fly solo from England to Australia, 1928 and to fly solo across the South Atlantic, 1931. Contemporary newspaper accounts are a treat to read; "The Maid of the Mountains", June 1930 and "Capt. Hinkler Visits The Blue Mountains" June 1928. "Hundreds of people gathered in the spacious gardens of the hotel...After lunch the party was taken up by the lift (the same lift in use today!) to the roof of the hotel...Amy was charmed with the view from this excellent position..." Blue Mountain Star, Saturday 14 June 1930 http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article190110873 Amy flew across oceans and kept vigil by her plane in the desert, revolver in hand, but had to have a chaperon when visiting Katoomba! "A large crowd assembled at Goyders Corner ...cheers and hand-waves ushered the visitors into the Carrington gates....Over the dinner the speeches were brief almost to vanishing point." Hinkler acknowledged the scenery was "magnificent...(but) It would present added beauties if enjoyed from the air." Blue Mountains Echo, Friday 1 June 1928 http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article108954880 Air services to the Blue Mountains is a topic still hotly debated today! 06.01.2022 "There is a hidden message in every waterfall. It says, if you are flexible, falling will not hurt you." Mehmet Murat ildan Flexibility is definitely desirable in these challenging times, but we dont recommend "falling"! Todays walk is from #ScenicWorld_aus along Prince Henry Cliff Walk to the top of the Furber Stairs, its then an easy walk to Vanimans Lookout with its great views to the waterfall and across to the Three Sisters. You may wish to stop here or descend down... several steel ladders to Juliets Balcony and the Rainforest Lookout. Continue to take a left turn onto the Underfalls Track to the first landing of Katoomba Falls. This part of the walk has steep stairs and steel ladders, so please assess your fitness level and allow sufficient time to descend and ascend especially if you attempt all 951 stairs of the "Furbers". Dont forget if you go all the way down you have to climb back up again (if you are not continuing through to the valley below and ascending the Giant Stairway or through Leura Forest and up the Leura stairs. Both of these options require a much greater commitment of time and a good level of fitness.) Coming back up on the Scenic Railway from the bottom of the Furber Stairs is an option when Scenic World is open, Thursdays to Sundays. Double check train times before you set out as you dont want to miss the last train www.scenicworld.com.au Dont forget when visiting Blue Mountains National Park, stay on the track and "take only pictures..leave only footprints". . . . #WildWednesday #bushwalk #katoomba #carringtonhotelkatoomba #bluemountains #bluemountainsnationalpark #worldheritage #historichotel #GoBlue #stayanightortwo #LoveNSW Ask Roz Blue Mountains NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service Explore Blue Mountains Blue Mountains Visitor Information Centres Visit Blue Mountains Visit NSW

05.01.2022 "And if it is your business to make people comfortable by big or small acts of attention, false pride or snobbishness should not prevent your performing them." Sir James Joynton Smith At todays Carrington we are still in the business of making our guests comfortable "without false pride or snobbishness." and would like to think that Sir James would approve of the level of comfort and attention to detail in the suite that nears his name.... This welcoming two room suite has access to the First Floors shared balcony enjoying stunning views across Katoomba towards Jamison Valley. This suite has a separate lounge with pullout sofa bed and a bedroom that features a queen sized four poster bed. 01.01.2022 "..there is no task in any business ... that should be beneath him. Dignity resides in the way you do your work....To be above your business is to be beneath contempt." Sir James Joynton Smith This man is too big for one post so consider this an introduction. ... Owner of The Carrington from 1911 until his death in 1943, he added 200 rooms and our glorious Art Nouveau stained glass verandah, literally, and figuratively, electrified Katoomba, created our first bank, started a football team and newspaper, at the same time maintaining extensive interests, both commercial and personal, throughout the mountains and in Sydney. Sir James was beyond colourful, running away to sea as a boy and dying a multimillionaire, his estate the subject of a scandalous court case not settled until 6 years after his death. The stories of his life are fascinating and many, no surprise considering he was, in no particular order; a hotel owner, racecourse and racehorse owner, President of NSW Rugby League, publican, gambler, union organiser, newspaper proprietor, sportsman, politician - Lord Mayor of Sydney, friend of Clyde Packer, champion of the working man, founder of South Sydney Hospital and philanthropist. He dabbled in cars, selling war bonds, cinemas and multiple marriages, played the concertina and billiards, sang, boxed, backed Sydneys first radio station all the while being attracted to the supernatural.....what a life, what an inspiration! We look forward to sharing some of his stories in detail over the coming months.
