16.01.2022 Yes, it’s true. After 30 years at Coward Springs we have handed over the reins to an energetic younger couple, Scott Palmer and Barb Dickson. Scott and Barb lov...e the outback and its lifestyle as much as we do and are keen to begin this new adventure. We had never intended leaving our outback home and business - unless of course - we found ‘the right people’. We began our seasonal life here in our late 30’s when we didn’t mind sleeping in our swags on the front verandah of the tumbling down Station Masters House. We slowly worked to restore the heritage of Coward Springs and Greg first stabilised then restored the ruin into a comfortable home. Business was slow to build too because in the 90’s there were very few travellers along the Oodnadatta Track and not everyone called in to camp (to see five vehicles a week was not unheard of). We are pleased that Coward Springs is now well and truly on ‘the map’ and that everyone who camps loves its ambience. And we are sure that Scott and Barb will not only look after our very special outback oasis but give it some new energy. We will of course miss Coward Springs and the country surrounding us. We have put down some strong roots here and so will be sure to maintain contact with the land that we love and those people who live here who have become friends. For those of you who have camped or camel-trekked or been regular visitors in other capacities, you can - and please do find us at our other home on Kangaroo Island. Never retired - but engrossed in some of those things put on hold until ‘after Coward’. So - over to Scott and Barb congratulations. We wish you all the very best in your new venture, plenty of good times with friends new and old and some leisure to enjoy your new home.

03.01.2022 On International Women's Day we celebrate all women who are adventurers in their own right: today we celebrate Anne Beadell. In 1962, Anne Len’s 20 year old w...ife, fresh from London and Connie Sue, his 20 week old daughter accompanied him on a 5-month expedition to perform reconnaissance for the Connie Sue and Anne Beadell Highways in the Great Victoria Desert. Anne’s mother was sure she would never see her granddaughter again when they set off on their adventure in the desert, but Len assured her that since it was winter they were more likely to freeze to death than to die from heat exhaustion. Grandma Ruth did not find this very reassuring, but Anne was determined to experience what took up so much of Len's time, and in the process, see the great Australian desert. With no disposable nappies and allowed only one bag for her personal belongings, Anne set off with Len and Connie in a Land Rover loaded high with food, water, spare parts and surveying gear and baby essentials a huge box of toilet rolls and another of Heinz baby food. Conditions were harsh, but they experienced many precious moments including bush bashing through the scrub, visiting Aboriginal communities, and spending time with the other members of the Gunbarrel Road Construction Party. Connie having a bath in the bucket is one of her most popular photos The story can be found in Bush Bashers lenbeadell.com.au/shop Anne always had the kettle on and welcomed many travellers to their home who came to visit Len to plan their next bush trip. Many of these travellers became good friends. In amongst this excitement, Anne learned to play violin and became an accomplished musician in her own right, teaching students and playing in many quartets and orchestras. Connie Sue Beadell has gone on to do her own adventuring with Beadell Tours. Another remarkable woman with many great achievements including the Len Beadell Plaque Restoration Project.
