25.01.2022 which includes Controversies in Illustration and Art,....

25.01.2022 Well done Matt Golding, Cartoonist of the Year 2018. Fairfax Media's Matt Golding took out the top prize, winning Cartoonist of the Year for his piece Curiouser and Curiouser. To mark the exhibition's opening, a dress-up Alice wandered the halls of Old Parliament House, seemingly dazzled and confused by the events portrayed.

23.01.2022 A message comes through from a friend. Theyre going ballistic about your dad." I roll my eyes and log onto Twitter to discover hes trending at number one. This has happened before and will probably happen again. This time he has offended people with a cartoon depicting a mother more in love with her phone and Instagram than the safety of her baby. The cartoon at the centre of the controversy. Illustration: Michael Leunig The cartoon at the centre of the controversy. Illus...tration: Michael Leunig CREDIT: Im not here to defend my fathers cartoon or work or to tell people they dont have a right to vent their anger at a drawing, but rather offer something of a different perspective after I watched the whole furore play out over 24 hours. Early in the morning I switch on ABC breakfast radio and listen to the co-hosts debating the cartoon. Of course its a more intelligent and nuanced discussion than what is playing out online. One of the hosts happens to be an old friend of mine who disagrees with the cartoon. It starts to feel a little weird. An hour or so and many talkback callers later my aunty Mary, also a cartoonist, is interviewed by Virginia Trioli. Mary is not happy and personal family matters are discussed. Mary and Michael no longer talk. She has drawn a cartoon of herself killing him that is now being lauded and shared across social media. Mary explains, Us Leunigs are a bit dopey, we just do things a bit with humour. I agree and I feel she may have inadvertently just defended her brother.

08.01.2022 "A day at the beach" 10th December 2019. Normally I photograph the natural beauty of the local area - this morning you could taste the smoke and was eerie as th...e foghorns sounded from the ships off Maroubra Beach making their way to Port Botany. I feel for my friends up the Coast and the fire fighters who have travelled to where the fires are threatening their homes and producing this thick smoke. Is it unprecedented, apathy on our part, mismanagement at Federal and State level or is nature doing its thing? See more

03.01.2022 The political cartoons of Dr. Seuss: A decade before he broke through as a famous children's book author, Dr. Seuss (Theodor Seuss Geisel) created more than 400... political cartoons for the liberal New York tabloid PM during the war. Primary targets for his biting caricatures were Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini, conservative politicians, and isolationists. Dr. Seuss also condemned anti-black and anti-Semitic beliefs, but he targeted all Japanese as potential enemies of America. In cartoon pictured aboved, which appeared in PM on February 13, 1942, he expressed the fear that most of the Japanese Americans on the Pacific coast were potential saboteurs. His cartoons contributed to the hysteria that led to the internment of Japanese Americans in 1942.

02.01.2022 Something from the files from about 10 years back, but it never seems to go out of date.
