17.01.2022 It’s this weekend!!! A musical journey from Bizet to Barcelona. Lose yourself in an evening of songs and music, inspired by Spanish nights. Enjoy favourite hits from Carmen and folk songs including Besame Mucho, Chick Corea’s classic love poem Spain and authentic Andalusian flamenco pieces.... The stellar trio of Adelaide-based artists flamenco guitarist Aloysius Leeson, swinging fiddle player Julian Ferraretto and opera and folk singer Elizabeth McCall will entertain you with a performance showcasing their exquisite talents. A love of flamenco led Aloysius to spend time in Spain following the traditional apprenticeship of accompanying singers and dancers. Since returning to Adelaide he has continued to perform as both a soloist and accompanist. Career highlights include performing with his quartet at the 2014 Adelaide Guitar Festival and a number of performances in Singapore with dancer Antonio Vargas. Composer and violinist Julian Ferraretto has toured the world as an improvising fiddle player including performances with Natacha Atlas, Bruce Springsteen, Shakira and Eska. Highlights include regular performances at Womadelaide, sold out performances of his own works as a soloist with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and performances at all the major European jazz festivals. Singer Elizabeth McCall sings with the South Australian State Opera Chorus as well as performing her own works as a soloist and with her duo the McCall sisters. 14.01.2022 Buleria with castanets! Definitely an inspiring Flamenca

13.01.2022 Ricardo has done it again! We are loving our journey learning Farruca on Monday evenings and Ricardo was inspired to do this cartoon

13.01.2022 Richard (AKA Ricardo) inspires each of us at Casa de Flamenco. Wise, consistent and brave, qualities that make for a wonderful dancer and person, he has them all. Thank you Richard for sharing about your flamenco journey with us below: "One of the most memorable events in my life was seeing for the first time Flamenco dancing. I was mesmerized and totally captivated by the raw fusion of music, singing, human expression, movement and color together with a dynamic dialogue bet...ween artists and audience. What I saw was the distilling of sophisticated complexity and professionalism into the most remarkable visual experience. The revelation of a hidden language. From that point on I was driven to experiencing and understanding more the art of Flamenco. The opportunity arose to go further on this quest when Kristy Manuel accepted me as a beginner’s student at Casa de Flamenco. This was a remarkable opportunity for me in Flamenco, the equivalent of not just admiring a beautiful painting but to magically step into it. My appreciation for the skills of those who dance Flamenco skyrocketed and further enhanced my appreciation of this artform. Kristy’s mentoring, guidance and tolerance particularly for someone who has come to dance so late in life has been so important and hugely appreciated. I have come to understand and appreciate the additional important features of being a student of Flamenco dance. It is a most powerful way to exercise memory, balance and agility in the company of supportive students who share a love of the dance. You will gather I am constantly learning and very passionate about Flamenco dance. It is an important part of my life for I understand fully what Martha Graham the dancer meant when she said; Dance is the hidden language of the soul of the body." Photos by Luke Greaves

11.01.2022 Marisa is a joy to share flamenco with and I am so proud of how far she has come. It takes a lot of determination and patience to stick with flamenco and I am grateful to be her guide. Here is a little about her flamenco journey so far: "I’ve been going to Kristy’s classes for about 5 years now and each year I fall in love with Flamenco more and more. Before I went to my first class I hadn’t danced since I was a child, so it took me a while to find my feet in the beginning, e...specially as I never saw myself as a dancer. However, I really liked the way Kristy taught, and I always felt encouraged and supported during class so I kept coming back. Eventually I became more confident in my dancing abilities, and nowawadays I'm really proud of the progress I've made. I like how Kristy creates a very inclusive space for people of all ages and abilities, so that there's no need for competitiveness, and we can focus on being the best dancers we can be. I'm not sure how she does it, but Kristy is able to find the perfect balance between being thorough when teaching us techniques and choreography, pushing us when we need it, yet still making sure it's at the right pace for the group and that we can ask questions every step of the way. Plus she does all of this whilst making it a fun and enjoyable experience at the same time. I've also loved getting to know some of the awesome people who attend her classes, and I always look forward to connecting with them too. Coming to flamenco each week has become really important to my overall wellbeing, so even when I've had a big day or long week at work, I never want to miss a single class. I'm very grateful I came along to my first class all those years ago as it has truly changed my life for the better, so I'd recommend Kristy's classes in a heartbeat." Photos by Luke Greaves

05.01.2022 This is Alison's story with how she begun flamenco and why she loves it. Alison is a kind and compassionate person with whom I have had the pleasure of sharing flamenco and yoga with for many years. "After cancer surgery I was looking for ways to be more active. As I was already a yoga student of Kristy's for many years I started flamenco. I found myself tentatively learning about Sevillianas, flats and opposites and a host of other terms that tested my brain, body and coordi...nation. Flamenco is challenging, emotive and fun (especially when you can laugh with fellow students at your attempts to get something right). Kristy provides a welcoming learning community at Casa de Flamenco. As a former secondary school teacher, it’s good to realise that learning can be challenging, that it takes many attempts to understand something, get it right and even then learning is an ongoing process. I’ve undergone further major surgery and flamenco has been key to helping to restore and develop postural muscles. It’s helped strengthen ankles that used to turn easily. I’ve worked through tendon issues that have strengthened from one year to the next through regular classes and practice. In my work as a therapist, I witness a huge gamut of emotions. There are times dancing flamenco when I can express the pain, the pathos, the anger, the grief, the courage, the exasperation and the joy I see in my work with people. Flamenco has been very good for me. Thank you Kristy for your patience and encouragement." Photos by Luke Greaves
