25.01.2022 Vale Missy. It is with much sadness that CVC wish to advise on the passing of Missy. Missy was the pet of Phil’s daughter Evie. As well as being half of Missy and Moo’s diary, Missy was a blood donor. Over the 14 years she was with us, she saved countless canine lives with her special Missy blood. She was a special puppa and we wish to pass on our condolences to Evie and her sister Annabelle. She will be missed but remembered.

19.01.2022 EXPLOSION OF BUFFALO FLY NUMBERS IN LOCAL CATTLE HERDS The blood sucking parasite is a serious pest for both cattle and buffalo and can cause subst...antial losses in production with a reduction in weight gain and a milk decline. North Coast Local Land Services' district veterinarian Liz Bolin said the warm, humid conditions are behind the spike. "The numbers are increasing and we're getting a lot more reports from producers about problem buffalo fly numbers," she said. "It's a biting fly so it feeds on the blood of cattle and it causes extreme irritation and pain, so we see decreased production and decreased animal welfare outcomes when the fly numbers get too high. "Most animals don't become too irritated until they get around 100 flies per side in beef cows and 30 flies per side in dairy cows, that's when we start to see production limitation due to the flies." But she said that low numbers can cause an issue for animals with a hypersensitivity to buffalo flies. "It takes up to only four flies in those circumstances to cause irritation," she said. "Those animals get extremely irritated, so they rub themselves causing sores on their fronts around their eyes." Dr. Liz Bolin said that LLS recommends an integrated approach, using both chemical and non-chemical options, to control the pest. "Non-chemical control options include buffalo fly traps, encouraging the activity of dung beetles because the fly basically lays its eggs in the cow poo so by encouraging the dung beetles we're reducing the amount of faeces there for them to reproduce in," she said. "Other things like culling those allergic cattle is a really good idea because then you're not treating your entire herd based on the actions of individuals and also it's a very heritable trait so you're just getting rid of that hypersensitivity out of your herd as well."

07.01.2022 Knowing Barn owls are nocturnal Keith quickly contained a Barn Owl he found sitting by the roadside in Lismore during the day. WIRES volunteer raptor carer Mel...anie responded to the call, and as the owl was obviously injured took the bird to Casino Vet Clinic where an examination revealed it had been savagely attacked by birds, most likely Magpies or Currawongs. Spring and summer can be a dangerous time for owls as other birds are very protective during breeding season and will often launch a combined attack. The injuries sustained to the owls head were significant, with one peck narrowly missing an eye. Fortunately the skull was not fractured, but the owl was certainly suffering from a heavy concussion. Melanie brought the owl home and with gentle care which included pain relief, ointment and antibiotics, the bird gradually healed over the next few weeks. Fresh new skin grew on the head but he was completely bald. When he was brought back to the vet for a check-up he was nicknamed Friar Tuck! It is now seven weeks since Friar Tuck was found and he is almost ready for release. His head feathers have nearly all grown back and interestingly, they appear to be a different colour than the rest of his head. Friar Tucks release will take place at night close to where he was found by Keith, but in a suitable area with lots of trees. Barn owls have exceptional hearing and their heart shaped facial disc helps direct sound waves to their ears, allowing them to pinpoint their favorite food such as mice and rats even in complete darkness. During the day they sit quietly concealed on a tree branch amongst thick foliage. Thank you Keith for saving this magnificent bird of prey.

01.01.2022 Please Check In. As you enter the surgery you will notice a QR code check in for NSW. Please take the time to scan the code with your mobile phone and check in. If you are unable to do this, please tell reception so they can do a manual check in. Although not compulsory for this business as yet, we take the Corona Virus threat very seriously and want to do our part to help prevent the spread and hopefully avoid the lock down measures of earlier this year.
