24.01.2022 Casino Rescue Squads snake handler stopped by a property in Wyan today to assist with the removal of a python from under a house, the reptile hadn’t moved on after a few days and despite the resident living in a rural area and being somewhat used to snakes, there were concerns for the dogs and a bird at the property. 23.01.2022 Casino Rescue Squad would like to wish our Captain Phil Cornish a very happy birthday.

23.01.2022 At 1:41pm today Casino Rescue Squads snake handler was again activated to a snake job, this time on the western end of North Street Casino. On arrival the elderly occupants had the unknown species of snake secured in the bathroom with towels across the door to impede its escape. On inspection the snake was identified as a common tree snake (Dendrelaphis punctulatus) This common snake is harmless, readily recognised as it is an agile snake with a very slender body and tail. Th...e body colour varies from green to olive-green to black, sometimes even blue, frequently pale yellow on the throat and belly but other pale colours have been noted, blue flecks are present on the flank. Eyes are larger than in most snakes. The snake was safely captured and released. Please note that the photo taken on the snakes release shows the snake being defensive, this is not an aggressive pose but a pose to warn you that the snake is feeling threatened. If you encounter this just stand still and don’t make and sudden movements. #vrarescue

20.01.2022 RIP Stephen. Casino VRA send our love and thoughts to your family, friends and our colleagues.

20.01.2022 At 12:20pm today Casino Rescue Squads snake handler was activated to assist with a large snake in a kitchen cupboard in the eastern part of North Street Casino. On arrival and after some careful manipulation of cupboard flooring a Red Bellied Black snake was found to be the cause of everyone’s panic. The snake was eventually safely captured and released in a habitat suitable area. Below is some information on one of Australia’s most commonly encountered snakes.... The red-bellied black snake (Pseudechis porphyriacus) is a species of venomous snake in the family Elapidae. Averaging around 1.25 m in length, it has glossy black upperparts, bright red or orange flanks, and a pink or dull red belly. It is not an aggressive species and generally retreats from encounters with people, but can attack if provoked. Although its venom is capable of causing significant illness, no deaths have been recorded from its bite, which is less venomous than other Australian elapid snakes. The venom contains neurotoxins, myotoxins, and coagulants and has haemolytic properties; victims can also lose their sense of smell. #vrarescue

17.01.2022 At approximately 1pm today Casino Rescue Squad’s snake handler was tasked by Police to attend an address in Kyogle regarding a possible eastern brown snake in an elderly ladies lounge room. The lady was in a right state and there was no WIRES or other snake handler available to assist. Casino VRA does not normally attend to jobs in this area as it is in the capable hands of the local SES however they do not have a snake handler. On arrival the snake was thought to be under a ...recliner and after some prodding and tapping a Yellow Faced Whip Snake (Demansia psammophis) was found to be the culprit and cause of all the panic. The snake was quickly captured and released safely away from harm and people. The Yellow-faced Whip Snake is a slender and fast-moving snake, active during the day. It is common throughout most of Australia. It is often confused with the Eastern Brown Snake. The Yellow-faced Whip Snake is a venomous snake, but is not considered dangerous. However, a bite could be extremely painful, with much local swelling. #vrarescue

16.01.2022 NSW Severe Thunderstorm Warning Large Hail, Heavy Rain, Damaging Winds Source: Bureau of Meteorology... For people in Northern Rivers and parts of Northern Tablelands Forecast Districts. Issued at 2:23 pm Sunday, 25 October 2020. SEVERE STORMS DEVELOPING IN THE NORTHEAST Weather Situation: Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding, damaging winds and large hailstones in the warning area over the next several hours. Locations which may be affected include Lismore, Grafton, Casino, Kyogle, Yamba and Maclean. The State Emergency Service advises that people should: * Move your car under cover or away from trees. * Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony. * Keep at least 8 metres away from fallen power lines or objects that may be energised, such as fences. * Report fallen power lines to either Ausgrid (131 388), Endeavour Energy (131 003), Essential Energy (132 080) or Evoenergy (131 093) as shown on your power bill. * Trees that have been damaged by fire are likely to be more unstable and more likely to fall. * Keep clear of creeks and storm drains. * Don't walk, ride your bike or drive through flood water. * If you are trapped by flash flooding, seek refuge in the highest available place and ring 000 if you need rescue. * Be aware that run-off from rainfall in fire affected areas may behave differently and be more rapid. It may also contain debris such as ash, soil, trees and rocks. * After bushfires, heavy rain and the loss of foliage can make the ground soft and heavy, leading to a greater chance of landslides. * Unplug computers and appliances. * Avoid using the phone during the storm. * Stay indoors away from windows, and keep children and pets indoors as well. * Stay vigilant and monitor conditions. Note that the landscape may have changed following bushfires. * For emergency help in floods and storms, ring the SES (NSW and ACT) on 132 500.

13.01.2022 We often get asked who we are and how did we form, in regards to the NSW VRA follow this link- https://www.rescue.org.au/about Casino Rescue Squad is a proud affiliate of the NSW Volunteer Rescue Association. For those of you wondering about your local squad here is our history - ... Casino Rescue Squad has a proud history in the town dating from the first meeting on September 21st 1979 and from there evolved into the cohesive unit it is today. On September 9 1980 a well-attended public meeting in the town unanimously decided to form a rescue squad to serve Casino and district. The Casino District Volunteer Search and Rescue Organisation as it was then called, was officially formed less than a week after the public meeting on September 15 1980. In six months with the help from Rotary an old one tonne International truck became the first fully equipped rescue vehicle for Casino. At that time the squad operated out of local man Trevor Chie’s garage on North Street. The first sod was turned in June 1986 for the current shed and was completed in 1988 (officially opened May 7 1988 by Casino Mayor Jim Dargaville). Fundraising to the tune of $30,000 accomplished this feat with untold volunteer hours including professional trades people. Of the original founding members Eric Box, Noel Ball and Bill Evans still provide 24/7 rescue call out service for The Casino VRA . The wealth of experience and knowledge that these original members provide give Casino a unique understanding of rescue in this area. Today we boast 14 members dedicated to the Casino Community. So much has changed and the face of rescue is constantly evolving. Our nationally accredited qualifications are a testament to those early years of the VRA. The perseverance, courage and relentless hard work provided the platform to build on for our 2020 version of the Casino Rescue Squad. Our existence is not only due to our members but also to the partners and families of our operators. Weekly training and 24/7 callout as well as fundraising commitments means time away from our loved ones. Casino Rescue Squad would like to acknowledge the sacrifice of all involved and also to the Casino Community whose unwavering support from day one has enabled what was a vision at the end of 1979 to become a reality. #vrarescue #thenorthernriverstimes #PRIME7
