25.01.2022 CASSOWARY COAST WELCOMES NEW AUSTRALIAN CITIZENS Seven individuals are Australia’s newest residents following today’s Citizenship Ceremony, conducted by Cassowary Coast Regional Council Mayor, Mark Nolan. Congratulations.

25.01.2022 Riverbank works commence at Innisfail Bowls Club Cheers of celebration resounded from The Corso as works commenced to save the Innisfail Bowls Club from a threatening landslip. Following a flood in 2019 which weakened the riverbank and retaining wall below the club, Cassowary Coast Regional Council joined forces with Innisfail Bowls Club to secure critical funding to rebuild the club’s retaining wall by the Johnstone River.... Cassowary Coast Mayor, Mark Nolan welcomed the Mager Constructions Pty LTD team on site and congratulated the Bowls club on the significant milestone. The works are jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland Governments under Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA) through the $18 million Community and Recreational Assets Program. 25.01.2022 MAYOR’S CHRISTMAS MESSAGE When reflecting on the year 2020, one word sums it up for me and that word is ‘Resilience’. The oxford dictionary defines resilience as the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties; toughness. The ability of a substance or object to spring back into shape; elasticity. ... Resilience allows us to overcome challenges, hardship and adversity and I am proud and thankful for Council staff who stood strong, dignified and were all heart during a challenging time. Now we are moving into Covid-Recovery and looking towards a brighter future and is fighting back against the effects of COVID-19. Queensland is predicted to rebound almost twice as strong as the Australian average. We are restarting our local economy to provide new opportunities and to support our residents. Along with our Chamber of Commerce and business groups, we will continue to work with State and Federal Governments to bring forward shovel-ready projects, apply for further funding and help stimulate the economy. We have delivered safer road upgrades, invested in projects such as the new Tully Grandstand and supported local community groups with grants. With scenic views of the Wet Tropics and the Great Barrier Reef, regional lifestyle, fresh fruit and vegetables grown on our doorstep and affordable housing, there is no better place to be than the Cassowary Coast. Thank you Cassowary Coast residents. The way you have all rallied to keep our community safe since COVID-19 has been exceptional. I look forward to a year ahead of growth and opportunity. On behalf of Cassowary Coast Regional Council, fellow Councillors and Council staff, I would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and above all, a healthy and safe 2021. 24.01.2022 STAY SAFE DURING WET WEATHER EVENTS With Far North Queensland experiencing heavy rainfall and damaging winds from Ex-Tropical Cyclone Imogen, Council is encouraging residents to stay safe and stay prepared. Cassowary Coast Regional Council Mayor Mark Nolan said that the Cassowary Coast region had already experienced heavy rainfall with more predicted.... Flash flooding is forecast to develop between Cooktown and Ingham on Monday afternoon and continue into Tuesday. Residents should continue to monitor the Bureau of Meteorology for updated advices and warnings. Council also offers the latest advice, information and updates on the Cassowary Coast Disaster Dashboard. In times of wet weather events and natural disasters it’s important to have a single point of reference to access up to the minute information including road conditions, weather advices and warnings, power outages and local information and contacts. The dashboard also offers checklists and resources to help residents prepare. Residents can also access free sandbags from their local State Emergency Service (SES), which are located in Innisfail, Mission Beach, Tully and Cardwell. For assistance with sandbags or storm damage, the SES can be contacted via phone on 132 500, Councillor Nolan said. Please stay safe, think before you drive anywhere, be aware of the flood risk and remember, if it’s flooded, forget it. The updated cyclone and storm guide is available at Council offices, post offices at Cardwell, Tully, Mission Beach and Innisfail. An electronic version is also available on our website. 24.01.2022 What goes into my wet and dry waste bin? This Christmas help us reduce contamination of dry waste by learning what waste goes into which bin.

22.01.2022 WASTE WEDNESDAY Did you know that you can dispose of your white goods (fridges, washing machines and air conditioners) for FREE at any of our Transfer Stations? All white goods are then separated based on metal type and recycled for reuse. How cool is that! ... So instead of dumping your white goods, dispose of them with us. It could save you a $2,000 fine. 22.01.2022 Guyji, the Archibull has moooved to the Innisfail Library and can be viewed from Monday 4 January 2021. Guyji is the Innisfail State College entry into the Archibull Prize. The artworks on display are the final outcomes of a cross-faculty collaboration between Year 9 Art and Agricultural students. The word ‘Guyji’ translates to ‘determined to do the right thing’. The students identified that ultimately it is the consumer who can drive change in the way we manage agricultural ...land, and the management of healthy, safe and sustainable catchments is everybody’s business. Students from both disciplines were taken on a learning journey, albeit ‘two different paths, all leading to a ‘common future’ of increased awareness of our local and global environments, the impact of human activities and agricultural enterprises and conservation of local natural capital and resources. Guyji, the Archibull is the visual representation of the research investigation conducted by the Year 9 agricultural students. The research was presented to the Year 9 Art students in which they then reinterpreted this into visual language to communicate to an audience. Grade 7 students explored a similar program named Kreative Koalas and their art work will be in display alongside Guyji.

21.01.2022 OUTER TOWN BLITZ HELPING TO BEAUTIFY THE CASSOWARY COAST The Work Camp Program has finished well ahead of schedule with an outer town blitz to maintain and beautify our regional areas. Cassowary Coast Regional Council Councillor Kylie Farinelli said Council has had a long relationship with the program and has provided many benefits for our outer areas.... Work commenced in November 2020 and was completed a month ahead of expected completion date. Works were undertaken in South Johnstone, Wangan, Mourilyan, Silkwood, Moresby, Cowley Beach, Kurrimine Beach and El Arish. The Work Camp Program allows low risk prisoners from Lotus Glen Correctional Centre Farm to perform community maintenance and beautification projects in regional areas of the Cassowary Coast. I have been an advocate for this program in our region as participation in the program allows prisoners to give back to the community, improve their work skills and job readiness and also promotes successful prisoner rehabilitation. 19.01.2022 NOTICE TO CASSOWARY COAST RESIDENTS TO CONSERVE WATER A spokesperson for the Cassowary Coast Regional Council said the current heavy rainfall associated with Ex-Tropical Cyclone Imogen is creating water supply issues across the Cassowary Coast water supply systems and residents are requested to minimise their water usage until the current weather event has improved. The new Bulgun Reservoir commissioned in late 2020 has already assisted Council in avoiding multiple boiled w...ater events in the Tully supply system, however current high water consumption is placing that at risk. Heavy rainfall has increased the turbidity (‘dirtiness’) of the water at our Tully intakes and they have been closed. The intakes for Cardwell and Nyleta are also closed. Council is now relying on water storages in our reservoirs to supply clean water. If the creek systems run dirty for an extended period there is a risk that our storages will be depleted before our intake creeks run clean again. This would force the implementation of widespread boil water alerts. The Innisfail water treatment plant is also being challenged by this weather event and our request to conserve water applies to all properties within the region, they said. Council asks residents to conserve water so we will have enough clean water storage in our reservoirs to get us through this period of heavy rainfall. Residents can reduce their water usage by turning off sprinklers that are set on a timer, reduce the length of time spent in the shower, turning off the tap while you brush your teeth or shave, wait until your dishwasher or washing machine is fully loaded before turning it on and choose shorter, economy wash cycles. Further advice will be issued if boil water alerts are implemented.

13.01.2022 MEET YOUR STREET BBQ INITIATIVE Cassowary Coast Regional Council is encouraging residents to Meet Your Street and get to know your neighbours to ensure that you can support each other during times of need like the lead up to and during cyclone and storm season. Division 3 Councillor and Community and Culture portfolio holder Councillor Trudy Tschui said knowing our neighbours turns the place where we live into a home.... To encourage neighbours to meet their street, Council is offering each division in the Cassowary Coast a chance to win a meat pack to hold an event. Each BBQ pack will be up to the value of $200 and Council will be supporting various businesses around our region to purchase these packs. Times are tough, so looking out for each other is more important than ever. Social distancing doesn’t need to mean social disconnection, Councillor Tschui said. This initiative is about turning streets into neighbourhoods. It isn’t about large scale events, but smaller localised events that adhere to current COVID-19 rules. Getting to know our neighbours helps us build better relationships in our community and encourages supporting each other. We can share resources, like borrowing some tools or helping during the preparation of the upcoming storm season. With Cassowary Coast Clean Up Week running from 7 to 15 November, there is no better time to get to know your neighbour and give each other a helping hand. To go in the running to win one of six BBQ packs, organisers will need to hold a clean-up activity in your street with participating neighbours, take a minimum of three images as evidence of activity and for Council promotion, forward images to Council with completed application form by Friday 27 November 2020. The winning BBQ packs will be drawn Monday 30 November with winning BBQ activities to be held anytime up until Friday 18 December 2020. Please remember to stay safe and adhere to COVID-19 regulations, such as keeping 1.5 metres apart and not exceeding the gathering limits set by the State and Federal Government. Stinger nets are scheduled to be installed across the region from Wednesday 28 October 2020, weather permitting. Nets will be situated at: Etty Bay... Kurrimine Beach Mission Beach South Mission Beach During the warmer months, marine stingers may be present in our tropical waters. You can minimise your risk of getting a nasty sting by always swimming in stinger nets where provided, wearing protective clothing, and not swimming when beaches are closed. Call for medical help (ring 000). 2. Assess the patient and perform CPR if necessary. 3. Douse the sting site with vinegar as soon as possible. Vinegar inactivates the stinging cells, preventing them from injecting more venom. 4. Reassure the patient and keep calm until medical help arrives. 5. Wait at least 45 minutes before re-entering the water as symptoms of Irukandji syndrome can take a while to develop. 6. If in doubt, treat as Irukandji sting. #stinger #beach #cassowarycoast #ettybay #kurriminebeach #missionbeach

06.01.2022 Be Crocwise What should you do if you spot a crocodile in the wild? Reporting helps build information on crocodile’s location, size and behaviour all important considerations in making a decision on how to manage crocodiles according the QLD crocodile management plan.... If you see a crocodile in Queensland, you should report it to the Department of Environment and Science via: QWildlife app ( you can also view reported and targeted crocodiles through the app) Report a sighting online via (insert link) Call 1300 130 372 We are now in crocodile breeding season. During the breeding season, male crocodiles become more mobile as they look for a mate and smaller animals are pushed out of rivers due to competition. The breeding seasons typically runs from October to April. However, no waterway in Northern Queensland can ever be considered crocodile-free. That’s why being croc-wise is so important. Just because you can’t see a crocodile, it doesn’t mean there is not one close by. Crocodiles can stay underwater for more than an hour. Even large crocodiles can be completely concealed in knee-deep water. For more information, visit https://environment.des.qld.gov.au//l/crocodiles/croc-wise

If you have family visiting over the Christmas and New Year period, I’d encourage you to pick up the ‘102 Things to Do’ on the Cassowary Coast’ and explore our beautiful region. The coast has many hidden gems and is the perfect spot to get away from it all and end the year on a high note. This time of year our many waterfalls, fresh water billabongs, and coastal islands are ripe and ready for people to enjoy. The local tourism industry has been significantly affected by the international and interstate border closure and Council has been proud to work collaboratively with Tropical Coast Tourism on a number of initiatives this year.
