17.01.2022 In 1994, Brisbane-based Waanyi artist, Judy Watson created the Koori Floor artwork in our Turbine Hall. This video produced by our friends from the Tate shows us a glimpse into her artistic practice. Her interest in the cultural memories tied to places influences her work, and can be seen in the way she infuses meaningful objects within them. To create the Koori Floor, Watson consulted with local community groups, conducted research in local land councils, museums and librar...ies, visited significant sites in the region, and workshopped ideas with Indigenous children and elders from the area to develop a design for the site. She conducted extensive research with the assistance of elders from the local Gandangarra and Tharawal Land Council to understand the geography and history of the local area and chose the river as the lifeline in her work. 12.01.2022 We have partnered on a very special Aussie installation with renowned artists George Gittoes and Hellen Rose who have been given the keys to their next door neighbour - The Surf Shack. In this video, George Gittoes shares some memories about the Surf Shack and the members of the surfing community in Werri Beach. The Surf Shack a yellow fibro house built in 1947 has been a base residence for the surf community at Werri Beach since 2005. This type of post WW2 house was made... iconic by Reg Mombassa in his Mambo art. It is one of the last of its kind and will be demolished soon after the exhibition ends. The Surf Shack Show will premiere Gittoes' 'Augustus Tower' suite of paintings which he has described "as being about a time when the bad guys have won." It will also feature performances of Hellen Rose's performance artwork, 'Haunted Burqa,' as well as Gittoes' documentation of some of wildest surf parties held at the Surf Shack and the very free lifestyles of his much loved neighbours. Performances will be held on 10 - 11 October 2020 (2pm). For more info, visit our website: http://ow.ly/t5Pp50BML9W
