24.01.2022 Heres one reason why induction for being post due date isnt a great idea, in and of itself....

24.01.2022 The Breastfeeding Association in Hobart is holding an online meeting next week to talk about preparing for breastfeeding - whether you're a first-timer or a more experienced feeder, it's always great to build your tribe of support! Follow the link to find out more https://www.breastfeeding.asn.au//ev/preparing-breastfeed

24.01.2022 Ahhh yes. All the things we didnt know and nobody told us!! What do you wish you knew before having kids? Me: how you can love them completely and yet at the same time be totally infuriated by them. Also, that fear increases my perception of pain, and fear can be reduced by acknowledging it and by getting good information.

24.01.2022 Nearly made it!

23.01.2022 Heres where the Apgar Score came from!

23.01.2022 ‘Transgender people aren’t trying to erase women, that’s the work of the patriarchy. Trans people are simply saying, We exist too. These policies are about embracing a new language, not erasing the current language. We are bringing more people into the room, not kicking anyone out.’

23.01.2022 TW Post partum depression and anxiety and suicide. We need to do better for new Mums and their families.

23.01.2022 Ron Hastie hosts Beer & Bubs in Tasmania. Ron was my midwife for the birth of our son, Tom, 11 years ago, and he was BRILLIANT. I was so thrilled when I found out Ron is doing Beer & Bubs sessions for Dads-to-be to have a crash course in what to expect during birth and afterwards. Many of my doula clients partners/husbands have been to Rons sessions and found them invaluable. Get along, even though its online for the time being, still well worthwhile!

23.01.2022 Wow!! What a week!!!! And its only Tuesday!! On Sunday my darling twin grandbabies, Benjamin and Matilda made their early arrival, theyre doing beautifully. And then today I had the absolute honour of supporting Maegan and Toby, for the second time, at the birth of baby George. The new birth suites at the Royal Hobart hospital are lovely and the birth pools excellent! #ilovewhatidoula

23.01.2022 Wonderful to see this service for our First Nations women, wouldn't be great to have something like this in Tasmania?

23.01.2022 Having the cord wrapped around the babys body or neck isnt automatically cause for concern.

23.01.2022 Do you want to make a difference to the maternal health care services you use? Or your sisters, daughters, nieces, aunts, siblings, loved ones use? Change begins with action. Write to your local MP to help improve our maternal health care services.

22.01.2022 Really interesting article. And so relevant for labour and birth. How we think about the pain of labour makes a world of difference about how we feel it. As Educator, speaker and doula Rhea Dempsey says understanding the purpose of labour sensations and re-framing contractions as pain with a purpose is important for coping during labour. The article states: ... Incoming signals can be amplified, attenuated or reappraised by the brain, which can dramatically change the individuals experience. So, being sad about your pain or being anxious at the dentist really will make it worse emotions are like amplifiers in your brain, turning up the volume of pain See more

22.01.2022 From Rachel Reed at MidwifeThinking: 2018 Australian maternity indicators report has been published. "This is this data examines a group of women whose characteristics suggest they have a lower risk of such complications. This gives a better indication of what can be expected in ‘standard’ cases. Selected women are those that meet all of the following criteria: Were aged between 2034 years Gave birth between 3741 completed weeks of gestation Had a singleton baby who p...resented in the vertex (head down) position" For women birthing their first baby the low lights include: 45% induction only 43.8% birthed vaginally without instruments (30.1% CS) Episiotomy rates for non-instrumental vaginal birth have risen to 22% while 3rd and 4th-degree perineal tear rates remain the same. It gets worse every year https://www.aihw.gov.au//national-core-maternity-i/summary

21.01.2022 This is a US article, but the questions to ask your care provider about cesareans are good ones, as is the section about ‘red flags’ in their response.

19.01.2022 Such an important thing to remember, especially in late pregnancy and early motherhood. Its just too easy to get swept along with all the things we should be doing and miss out on the precious joys of being in the moment. Connecting with your baby in the last weeks and days before they make their incredible journey into your arms. Absorbing their newborn nuances, and marvelling at their beautiful exploration of this world.

18.01.2022 The first day of spring. A wonderful day for a beautiful water birth. Welcome to the world, little one.

18.01.2022 Ready to drop USBs of birth photos to my last round of beautiful clients (along with a little gift I like to leave for the babies - one of my favourite books!) I love catching up with families about 6 weeks after the birth, (as well as our meeting soon after the birth) to check in and see how everyone is (and maybe have a cuddle) With my clients permission I will share a couple of these photos in the coming weeks.

17.01.2022 Yesterday I saw one of my doula babies in town with her Mama and big sister. Today this gorgeous little being turns one! Her birth was an amazing, healing, respectful, beautiful experience for her whole family. (And me!) It makes me so joyful to see these families thriving, knowing I played a small role in helping such fabulousness.

16.01.2022 Midwives rock!!

16.01.2022 Spinning Babies is a brilliant resource. I use its principles with my clients during pregnancy and labour. Check it out and hit me up if you have questions

16.01.2022 Identical Quadruplets!!!

14.01.2022 Partner support is one of the most important factors for successful breastfeeding. Here’s a great session to discuss what that might look like

14.01.2022 Where you birth and who is on your team can significantly influence how your birth goes. A recent study shows women having a home birth after a previous cesarean were 39 % more likely to have a vaginal birth than those having a VBAC in hospital. ‘Home births for those eligible for VBACs and attended by registered midwives within an integrated health system were associated with higher vaginal birth rates compared with planned hospital VBACs. Severe adverse outcomes were relatively rare in both settings’

12.01.2022 Arent human bodies amazing?

12.01.2022 Ive said it before, SIZE DOESNT MATTER!

12.01.2022 This is at the core of my doula work. Which is why it is so profoundly joyful and satisfying!

12.01.2022 These fabulous workshops are well worth doing if youre pregnant.

11.01.2022 Its here!!! The Royal Hobart Hospitals new pregnancy assessment and birthing ward has opened!! Im so looking forward to supporting my wonderful doula clients in this new space!

11.01.2022 I know its late in the day, but Im hoping you had a lovely Mothers Day. Even if it wasnt all about breakfast in bed or homemade cards or the perfect present. Especially if your day wasnt like that. Sometimes the special part of Mothers Day is a fleeting moment, a quick hug, a minute of quiet reflection of mothers loved and lost, or a brief glimpse of calm in the chaos. I see you. And I know all you do to keep it all together. What it takes to keep all the plates spin...ning. And how you feel when you believe youre not the best mum you can be. But, trust me on this, I know you are amazing, you are doing a brilliant job. Your kids love you, and the mothers who have gone before us are so proud of you. Youve got this, mama xxx Pic of my daughter Savannah, her oldest daughter Sophie, my Mum, Daphne, and me.

10.01.2022 Beautiful and everyday amazingness!

10.01.2022 Tuesdays are a good day for a birth Especially when your gorgeous couple has a fabulous midwife and excellent obstetrician, who steps back so midwife and Dad catch the baby.

10.01.2022 Some babies like to take their sweet time to arrive in this world, others are in a bit more of a hurry!! I knew as soon as I got to Christy & Steves home this morning at 1.30am that there was no way this baby was going to wait for the drive to hospital 20 minutes away!! Things had ramped up pretty quickly in the 40 minutes between when Christy texted me to say that her tightenings were definitely not a false alarm and when I arrived. As Steve called 000, I helped Christy s...tay calm and focussed, glad that the first part of our Birth Mapping is what do you, the parents, need to feel safe and confident if baby decides to come quickly at home? 17 minutes after I arrived, paramedics Mel and Tahlia were there, and three minutes later Baby Quinn joined us!!! Im thrilled to say Mum, baby Quinn, Dad and big brother Jensen are all well, if a little surprised at this mornings early arrival. See more

09.01.2022 This is exciting! My first three children were all born at the Canberra Birth Centre, (a lifetime ago!!) this is a wonderful option u der the public health system. Id love to see this in Tasmania.

08.01.2022 Our First Nations birthing women and their babies need our support! Last year while working with Yolngu women in Galiwinku, a remote Aboriginal community in Ea...st Arnhem Land our Founder Renee Adair saw a huge need within the community for basic products for newborns and new mothers. Yolgnu mothers do not have access or cannot afford what most of us take for granted, hence the YOTHU (Baby) Basket Project was born! Through our charity arm, Doula Heart Network, we want to supply 50 baskets of basic supplies for mums and bubs each year to Galiwinku, as 50 is the average birth rate per year in that community. We then hope to replicate this project in all remote First Nations Communities across the Country. The ADC is committed to continuing to provide much needed training and products for Yolgnu women and babies, and hope to do so for all of our First Nations communities across Australia but we can't do it without your help! To learn more about the YOTHU Basket Project visit: https://australiandoulacollege.com.au/social-community-pro/ To learn more about Galiwinku Djakamirr Project visit the link in our bio.... What's needed For Baby Wraps Baby blankets Onesies Baby clothes, up to 6 months Nappies Wipes (bio degradable) Baths Baby Towels Nappy Rash Creams Face cloths Baby washes Nail clippers For Mum Nipple Creams Maternity Pads Body washes Moisturisers (face and body) Shampoos and conditioners Hair ties Hair brushes Toothbrushes and toothpaste Washing powder/laundry soap Please help us urgently gather these much-needed products. If you can offer any assistance, can donate goods or can make a cash contribution to help us get the baskets to Darwin, we want to hear from you. Email: [email protected] Phone: 02 4286 0089 This is a life changing project for the families of Galiwinku and we need your help to make this happen. We would be grateful if you could please share our project among your families, friends and communities. 08.01.2022 Our words matter. Even the headline of this story ‘delivery’ is an outdated term which suggests the doctor or midwife delivers the baby from (or to) the waiting parent. I think pregnancy and birth are more appropriate terms.

07.01.2022 Flight, fight, freeze or fawn. Whats your response to perceived danger? How might that influence the path of your birth? What can you do about it?

06.01.2022 Ooohh!! Ive just purchased Rhea Dempseys new book for my lending library resources. Rheas knowledge is incredible and Im really looking forward to reading this and sharing with my doula clients

06.01.2022 This is such a beautiful piece. What song would you sing for your children? My youngest would definitely be Dont Stop Me Now!

05.01.2022 #truth It is your body, your baby, your birth. You are the decision maker. It is your right and responsibility to be well informed...not with bullshit scaremongering, misinformation, half-truths or outright lies. But with evidenced-based, unbiased information. ... #doulasupport See more

05.01.2022 Why would you choose to have a doula? Because this is the state of our current maternity system. Midwives are brilliant. They provide expert medical care. But you’re probably not going to have met them before your birth and they may not be able to provide the physical and emotional support you (and your partner if applicable) need. ... Because if you want continuity of care, support, someone by your side who knows what you and your family need, you need a doula. They'll all get cared for, but whether or not it's the care that meets their needs is another whole kettle of fish and I think that's what's happening a lot of women are just surviving pregnancy, labour and birth rather than thriving through it."

04.01.2022 One of the great things about living out of town is I spend a lot of time in the car, and I get to listen to some fantastic podcasts. Like this one with the legendary Australian childbirth educator and doula, Rhea Dempsey. I just received her latest book Beyond The Birth Plan: getting real about pain and power. Such a brilliant resource for my doula clients. ... We need to rethink the value of functional pain, and the complex hormonal symphony of labour. And what happens when we disrupt our Millenia of biological development. (Im not saying we should never use pain relief of course! But it is essential to be properly informed about its implications) Have a listen to this podcast about fear of pain in labour. https://podcasts.apple.com//s1-ep4-rhea-demp/id1445098838

04.01.2022 Theres a reason the toilet is called The Throne its so Birthing Queens can use it to be upright and supported and get Bub in an optimal position for birth. Watch this Birthing Queen welcome her baby into the world with her own hands.

03.01.2022 What a birth!! This beautiful little soul joined us this week. Her mama and I have worked together for most of the pregnancy, and our thorough Birth Mapping was put to full use! A Birth Map helps you to understand the myriad of ways a birth might take you to get to your destination of holding your baby in your arms. The Birth Mapping process ensures you are familiar with the terrain of birth. When you come to a deviation in your path, should you go left or right, or shoul...d you stay on the same path a bit longer? Which way will each path lead you? What might be the consequences of following that path? Those are not decisions you should make in a vulnerable and potentially exhausted state during the birth of your baby, without having worked through the all possibilities previously, when you are feeling stronger and more clear-headed. You wouldnt go for a bush walk in Tasmanias stunningly beautiful, but challenging wilderness without thorough planning, preparation and a map, so why on earth would you go into your birth unprepared? Birth Mapping is an essential part of planning for your babys arrival and key to being satisfied, and not traumatised, with your birth experience, which ever way it pans out.

02.01.2022 Great news that COVID-19 restrictions have eased in Tasmanian hospitals ensuring doulas can support women at their hospital births.

02.01.2022 Wondering what Spinning Babies is all about and how it can help you have an easier birth? Have a listen
