25.01.2022 September 10 is World Suicide Prevention Day, which aims to raise awareness around the globe that suicide can be prevented. Andy Hamilton SJ writes, "Doctors and psychologists have warned of the threat the coronavirus and the response to it pose to people’s mental health, with a particular focus on the risk of suicide. The link between the time of coronavirus and suicide is not surprising. Many people who take their own lives have found it difficult to make connections with p...eople and society due to mental illness. The pain they endure can make it hard to maintain close relationships with their friends and families. It also threatens their ability to connect with society through courses of study and through employment." 16.01.2022 "There are those who deny the existence of God claiming that the whole belief system is merely a human projection. However, the image of God that we see in the owner of the vineyard could not be further away from a human projection. A human god would never care for the poorest and most broken and would seek to reward believers for their effort and success, but according to the parable, Paul from St Kilda would have found a place in the vineyard and would have been rewarded. T...hat is how it will be in God’s kingdom - there is a special place for Paul." Fr Joe Caddy, Episcopal Vicar for Social Services in the Catholic Archdiocese of Melbourne shared a personal encounter during his homily on 20th September, a day that marked Social Services Sunday. It is a day where we give particular thanks, and pray for those who are the visible and practical signs of God's love in our communities. 13.01.2022 Today, November 20, is World Children’s Day. It is a timely reminder of the vulnerabilities of children and the need to ensure primary school aged children are in the playground not in prison. Jesuit Social Services' #WorthASecondChance campaign has just released a new animated short film about why Australian states and territories must raise the age of legal responsibility from 10 to 14. 600 children aged 10-13 are arrested, charged and locked up in Australian prisons ever...y year, despite there being a wealth of evidence from Australia and abroad showing that children under 14 years do not possess the neurological maturity to form criminal intent. We are asking supporters to send a letter to their local MPs asking them to raise the age. There is a pre-written letter here which allows you to easily email your lower and upper house MPs: https://worthasecondchance.com.au/raisetheage-1 Read more: bit.ly/35JU9rC #RaiseTheAge #WorthASecondChance Catholic Social Services Australia Catholic Diocese of Sale Catholic Diocese of Sandhurst Catholic Archdiocese of Melbourne https://youtu.be/eRvFl7mg7nA

11.01.2022 "The international day of peace is always timely. Unfortunately so. There is no end to wars and disputes between nations and between groups within them that take lives, devastate towns and impoverish nations. Peace is something that everyone wants, but most wars begin when one group or another tries to impose peace on its own terms. "To build peace you need to go further back and ask those who claim to want peace what they are willing to do and what interests they are prepare...d to sacrifice in order to build it. A test of their seriousness might be to ask what they are willing to do to support the people destroyed by wars in which their own nations have been involved." Andy Hamilton SJ writes on this International Day of Peace - 21 September. https://melbournecatholic.org.au//Please-sorry-thank-you-I

11.01.2022 "The truth is, slavery touches the lives of most of us in this room every day through the supply chains of the goods and services we purchase. Do you own a telephone or a computer, clothing, shoes? Do you drink coffee or tea? Do you wear jewellery or makeup? Do you buy seafood, pet food, meat, fruit, vegetables or eat fast food?" "I’m afraid you and I cannot deny that we benefit from the exploitation of other human beings in large part because they are invisible to us." 07.01.2022 "During this year of virus, isolation and loss of income, health workers have constantly expressed concern about its impact on mental health. They have also warned about a heightened risk of suicide. The time is now approaching when economic supports will be reduced, and we shall experience more deeply the painful effects of recession." Andy Hamilton SJ writes in Eureka Street about Jesuit Social Services' Support after Suicide program and a report it recently released. See:... bit.ly/32RtqIn "The report illuminates the devastating effects that suicide has on family and friends, and what needs to be addressed if they are to find help for the person at risk, and to find support and assistance for themselves during their ordeal and after the death of the person they care for. At the heart of the report is its insistence on the importance of the human face in health care." 04.01.2022 I’ve always wanted to be a foster carer and one day last year, I found myself driving behind a bus with a poster about the shortage of foster carers and I decided not to put it off any longer and put my hand up to see what I could do to help." - Jackie Naughton from North Dandenong. We are in the midst of Foster Care Week (13 19 September). Member organisation MacKillop Family Services pays tribute to the foster carers who stepped up in the midst of the pandemic to ensure children and young people at risk have a safe place to stay when they need it most. Perhaps you're thinking of being a foster parent? This inspiring story may just be the key.

04.01.2022 The proposed legislation that would enable the Federal Government to confiscate phones and other items in immigration detention has been debated in Federal Parliament during the first week of September and subsequently passed the House of Representatives. Aside from the other issues that are ongoing in immigration detention, some of which are outlined in this 2019 report by our member organisation Jesuit Social Services (https://jss.org.au/the-harsh-reality-of-onshore-immigr...atio/), the ability to connect to family and friends is important to uphold the dignity of those who have been placed in immigration detention. Phones and credit, which are often provided by friends in the community, are a lifeline for many. Behrouz Boochani's 2019 Victorian Prize for Literature winning book 'No Friend but the Mountains' was written on his mobile phone using WhatsApp. Senator Jacqui Lambie is likely to hold the decision making power in the Senate for this bill and has set up a poll asking for input on the issue: https://www.senatorlambie.com.au/advise_jacqui https://catholicleader.com.au//refugee-detained-in-brisban

03.01.2022 All are invited to join an online prayer vigil for Aboriginal Deaths in Custody led by Aunty Ravina Waldren, Brooke Prentis and Bianca Manning on Saturday 26th September between 5:30-6:00pm AEST. Two years ago we met as a movement to pray on the anniversary of Wayne Fella Morrison's Aboriginal Death in Custody. This year,... we are calling you to prayer once again, online and in your home. There have been over 540 Aboriginal Deaths in Custody since 1980 - over 440 of these since the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody released their report in 1991 with 339 recommendations, with only a handful of these recommendations being implemented. On Saturday September 26th, the 4th anniversary of the Aboriginal Death in Custody of Wayne Fella Morrison, we invite you to take time to learn the names and stories of three Aboriginal Deaths in Custody, and to pray, taking a minute silence at 5:40pm - representing the over 540 Aboriginal Deaths in Custody.
