22.01.2022 Did you know the TL Robertson Library sits at the beating heart of our Perth campus? Opened in September 1972, the Curtin University Library was designed b...y architect Vin Davies and named after Dr Thomas Logan Robertson, a key player in the establishment of WAIT (Curtin, before it was Curtin). It’s since been a base for library operations and favourite study spot enjoyed by many of our students over the years. Currently, the Library is undergoing a re-design aiming to respond to the contemporary needs of the Curtin community and transform the library into a place for digital innovation and social collaboration. 18.01.2022 Farewell to Harry Rolf, CAUL Communication and Policy Officer. CAUL would like to acknowledge the contributions of Harry Rolf for his contributions in the last 4 year. "Harry will shortly be leaving CAUL to undertake the role of Senior Policy Analyst at the Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering (ATSE).... Over the last 4 years, Harry has certainly made his mark on CAUL. Harry brought a breath of fresh air to the CAUL National Office in 2016 along with a wide-range of in-demand skills, deep knowledge of higher education and research and much-valued experience in governance matters in the not-for-profit associations sector. Never short of an informed opinion on just about any topic, Harry could always be relied upon to stimulate conversation and discussion and provide a variety of fresh ideas and perspectives. Together with Alisha, Cicy and Angus, I wish Harry all the very best in his new role at ATSE and we are pleased to have an ally, former co-worker and friend in one of the major academies." ---- Mark Sutherland, June 2020

13.01.2022 25 years of CAUL at ANU On behalf of the CAUL Board, all members of the Council as well as current and former staff of the CAUL National Office, Jill Benn, Chair of CAUL, has taken the opportunity to formally thank ANU for hosting CAUL over the past 25 years. 2020 marks a significant milestone as just over 25 years ago an office for the Council of Australian University Librarians (CAUL) was established in 1995 with Diane Costello seconded from ANU as the inaugural Executive O...fficer. CAUL has also occupied office space on the ANU campus since then. Of course, the history of CAUL goes way back to 1928 when the first meeting of Australian university librarians was held, through to the formation of the Committee of Australian University Librarians in 1965. But in many ways the establishment of the CAUL office 25 years ago marked a coming of age for CAUL in its goal of ensuring a common voice and representation for all university libraries. After many years as an unincorporated association, 2019 saw many changes for CAUL; becoming an association incorporated, the retirement of Diane Costello, and significant changes to the office structure. The COVID-19 pandemic then resulted in the progressive development of a virtual CAUL office. As 2021 dawns, CAUL is embarking on a new chapter as a direct employer, operating a connected virtual office with staff across three states and a small physical presence at ALIA House in Deakin, Canberra.

06.01.2022 During the last few months, some of our librarians have been supporting frontline health workers with their information needs during the COVID-19 pandemic. Ch...ristine Dalais has contributed to an open access paper on COVID-19 that has been published in the BMJ (British Medical Journal). Lars Eriksson has been working with School of Medicine academic title holders at the Queensland Children’s Hospital, creating and compiling a range of search queries on COVID-19 topics and running regular updates. The summary of updates is added to an evidence summary. David Honeyman has assisted Mater Education with several specialised searches relating to adapting and delivering training, from face-to-face to online delivery within the hospital. And librarians at Herston and Mater sites have conducted literature searches for staff on various aspects of COVID-19. Hospital staff have requested this information for informing clinical practice, developing protocols or guidelines to evaluate current services, design/redesign of future services, or for research or publication. These examples represent a cross section of areas we’re supporting in the clinical, educational and research areas of the hospitals. Don’t hesitate to get in contact if we can help you. https://web.library.uq.edu.au/contact-us

03.01.2022 [ Welcome on board! ] On Monday 4th February, CAUL welcomed Robert O'Connor to the office as new CAUL Executive Director. Message from Rob: "February means coming back from holidays, gearing up for a new school or academic year, finding bags and lunchboxes and maybe the iron, and generally getting back into harness. For me, this year, February has brought the excitement the terror? of a new job, and stepping into a role that’s a mix of the familiar and the unknown. I’m de...lighted to join CAUL as Executive Director and I’m looking forward to working with CAUL’s members, the team in the office, and our affiliates, partners and friends. While the position of Executive Director is new, the goal remains the same: promoting and reinforcing the importance of university libraries in teaching and learning, discovery and communication. Through this newsletter, and other channels, we’ll endeavour to keep CAUL members and others up-to-date with information, opportunities and ideas, seek your views on issues of common interest, and lead the conversation about the discovery, use and sharing of knowledge in Australia. For now, though, hello from me, and I look forward to meeting many of you over the coming months." https://www.vision6.com.au/em/message/email/view.php
