25.01.2022 Interesting read: Aus-Meat to Register a Trademark on Fodder. From ABA’s point of view, we are rather puzzled as to why anybody would want to trademark the word, Fodder Fed.... But this seems to be the case as Aus-Meat has applied to register a trademark on fodder, which will give them exclusive rights to use the trademark. Again, I can’t see the reasoning, unless it’s for a financial benefit? Anyone using Fodder Fed will have to be audited by Aus-Meat, which may create an income stream, adding yet another layer of complexity and cost to producers. Currently anybody using hay pellets or any other fodder, are obliged under the national vendor declaration (NVD), to have a vendor declaration supplied by the people selling the feed. During the drought producers were buying feed from hay merchants and regularly having to ask for NVDs on the fodder they were buying. If they insisted, they were told to get their feed elsewhere, which left producers in a dreadful quandary, do they risk using feed that doesn’t have an NVD accompanying it to keep their stock alive, or not? Fodder includes hay, straw, silage, compressed and pelleted feeds, oils and mixed rations, seeds and grains and sprouted grains and legumes. Aus-Meat advised that the Proposed CTM Rules are intended to certify that meat products marked with the Fodder Fed CTM have met a number of standards relating to systems management, product integrity, and environmental management. Sounds like more unnecessary red tape to me. The ACCC will be consulting with potentially interested parties on the certification trademark (CTM) rules, prior to making an initial assessment later this year.
