20.01.2022 5:12pm PETER HANNAM: Insurers continue to tally the cost of the bushfires across south-eastern Australia. The Insurance Council of Australia said that as of this morning some 420 claims for losses had been lodged from the fires in Tasmania, with insured losses estimated to be $42 million at this point. The losses in Tasmania range from destroyed homes to holiday shacks and small businesses, with assessors continue to inspect damage, said Campbell Fuller, a spokesman for the I...CA. So far, other states have avoided fire losses of the same scale even as conditions for fire remain extreme across large regions of the country. At this point, weve had no significant property losses in NSW, Mr Fuller said, adding that the ICA is monitoring fire events closely. 16.01.2022 Is my kitchen fire safe? The fire services recommend this simple safety checklist: Keep children away from hotplates and ovens whilst cooking and consider installing a stove guard. ... Heat cooking oil carefully and slowly in the right size saucepan to avoid fat splatters. Turn pot and pan handles inwards so they wont be knocked over. Clean your stove grill after each use and clean the range hood filter and all kitchen appliances regularly. Install a fire extinguisher and fire blanket in the kitchen and know how to use them. They should be situated at least 1 metre away from the stove and between the stove and the nearest exit. Install non-slip matting around the stove and sink area. If cooking oil catches fire, turn off the hotplate and slide the lid over the pan or use the fire blanket to smother the fire. If a kitchen fire occurs and you dont feel confident you can put it out, switch off the appliance, leave the premises and call the fire service on Triple Zero (000) from a safe place. Ensure that all cooking appliances are turned off after use. Dont leave your cooking unattended. If you must leave the kitchen whilst cooking, turn off the hotplate. Dont wear clothes with loose fitting sleeves. Dont keep your tea towels, oven mitts and other flammable items near the stove or cook-top. Dont use water to put out fat and oil fires. Water can cause the fire to spread rapidly and cause horrific burns. Dont carry pans of hot or burning oil through the house as this may spread the fire and cause serious injury.

12.01.2022 The following FIRE PREVENTION TIPS are all common-sense things but it always pays to double-check these basic things are in place. Consider the placement of garden beds, trees and other flammable objects. You should aim to keep the area around your house and other structures free of plants that can easily catch fire and then ignite the buildings. Dense shrubs should be kept away from a house, especially windows. If these burn closely, they can cause windows to crack and ember...s can then enter the house. A hedge trimmer is useful for this task. Objects such as timber patio furniture and plant boxes burn quickly; store these away from the house. Many people believe that trees are the major threat during a bushfire; however, the fire front is carried by the undergrowth including grasses, leaf litter and shrubs. Make sure you clear out accumulated debris such as loose flaky bark, dead twigs, leaves or needles commonly found in gutters and roof areas, but also your wider backyard. Clear fallen leaves, grass trimmings and other debris around the property. Fine fuels that continue from the ground to the tree crown are known as ladder fuels because they help the fire climb up into the tree tops. To limit this happening, take note of what is growing under the trees and consider how easily fire might be able to climb upwards, and remove or chop back accordingly. Keep grass mowed to less than 10cm as fire can travel quickly through long grass. Regular mowing, weeding and raking are important to remove potential fuel. Use pebbles or rocks in your garden, not mulch, which is highly flammable. Keep wood piles away from the house, as embers can easily ignite these. Store flammable liquids away from the house. If possible, store in flame proof containers. See more
