24.01.2022 Beautiful Christmas outing in Darwin for the little kids

21.01.2022 CREATING YES SPACES A yes space is simply a space where you don’t feel like you have to always be saying no, don’t touch and don’t climb to your child...ren. Creating yes spaces in your home allows everyone to feel more relaxed. Your children are free to touch, explore, move, climb, and look after their own needs, and you feel more at ease knowing they are unlikely to do serious damage to anything including themselves. What these spaces will look like will depend on your home and your family. Keep reading here https://bit.ly/2Ka7lh6 . . Our Mama Village . . 20.01.2022 Mums don’t need to justify themselves, their worth, their use of time, their financial position, or their decisions. Asking what mothers ‘do’ all day, usually p...oints to a lack of understanding about what it’s actually like to be looking after babies and children all day It also reveals how little we as a society value caring-work. And yet, our society relies on unpaid caring-work like mothering. In fact, in Aus it is valued at around $650 billion, and that figure is from 2012 research so it’s likely much higher now. But value isn’t determined only by what can be quantifiably measured. Nourishing, nurturing, guiding, and loving human beings is not only important, but it is critical. If we say we care about children as the next generation to be running our world, then we need to start caring about and valuing the people who are raising them, rather than asking them to justify what they ‘do’ all day. . . . If you want to join a community of mothers who are talking what it means to be a ‘mother’ in our society today, msg me about The Liberated Motherhood Membership

17.01.2022 When a child tells you that something as awful as abuse has happened to them or someone that they know - it can be really hard not to react from a place of shoc...k or even disbelief. However we need to stay calm and collected so that the child feels comfortable sharing so that we can work to stop the abuse. Protective Behaviours Expert, Holly-ann Martin, has 4 statements that should inform how you respond and she suggests learning it by heart - sort of like a mantra that will come out automatically should a child ever disclose abuse to you. Need more support? This must-watch #ParentTV video from Holly-ann of Safe4Kids does an excellent job at unpacking what to do if a child tells you they've been abused - check it out here: https://parenttv.com//what-do-i-say-if-a-child-tells-me-t/

16.01.2022 I was definitely not told this when I had an epidural with my first birth. #Repost @birthuprising Were you told that epidurals contain opioids & narcotics?... . According to the American Pregnancy Association, in order to keep the amount of anesthetic in an epidural lower, opioids or narcotics (such as fentanyl) are often added. . This is important information, especially for those in recovery who want to completely avoid this type of medication. . Epidurals can affect the baby by causing a slowed heart rate, "sleepiness" after birth, and trouble breastfeeding (all noted in the package insert). The anesthetic can also be found in the breastmilk of the mother, which has been shown to pass to the baby (https://evidencebasedbirth.com/effect-of-epidurals-on-brea/). . So the same people who just told you to spend 10 months avoiding alcohol, mercury from fish, and most medications are now the ones pushing an epidural and they probably didn’t tell you what was in it. . You deserve to know the risks, benefits & alternatives of all procedures that are proposed to you. It's the only way that you can make the best choice possible in your unique situation. . No matter what you choose during your pregnancy, birth & postpartum, having all of the information presented to you beforehand is crucial. This is the best way to avoid regret & reduce your likelihood for birth trauma. . When I received an epidural during my first birth, I was not informed about its contents. 10.01.2022 And here's where it starts. Right from the NSW Health government's "Blue Book" which every new parent gets when their baby is born in hospital. The information ...I have highlighted here is their opinion based on Western cultural norms rather than science, evidence based information and the biological norm. Science shows us that breastfeeding to sleep is the biological norm. Science shows us that our milk is filled with components in them which help relax our children and put them to sleep. Science shows us that mothers and babies instinctually feel that breastfeeding their babies and young children to sleep feels right and works for their child, and for them. Science shows us that forming secure attachments when we are babies and small children leads to secure, independent children and adults. Breastfeeding to sleep, mid-sleep and awake from sleep helps to form these secure attachments as we mother through breastfeeding. Breastfeeding to sleep is the biological norm. It is not a bad habit. It is what we have been doing since forever. Since the beginning of time. And we will continue to do because we choose to listen to our instincts and science. Not cultural influences based on opinion.

09.01.2022 This brand new documentary is screening in Darwin in March next year. It’s about birth, confident mothering and mother/ baby bonding. See you there

01.01.2022 Baby checks can be done right there on your chest so your baby doesn’t need to be separated from you. I’ve learnt so many things this year from @megclein and @...maetscott the midwives from @ittakesavillagemidwifery Things that I’m now using in my own practice as a midwife. I’ve always considered myself to be a very woman centred midwife but no matter how long you have worked as a birth keeper you will always have more to learn.
