25.01.2022 Day 3 of Pandemic Photography at home with the kids was a special one for my youngest, Bubble Photography. Yep, create a huge bubble by mixing liquid soap, water and Glycerol (I believe Gelatine can also work and is heaps cheaper). Lots of patience required to blow up the bubble, but some awesome worldly effects when you light it with a large octabox flash from directly above. Use a straw to blow it up, and then gently blow on it to spin the bubble and create some great effects. This one you will need a large octabox flash but you could also use thin white transparent material spread out with your off camera flash above it.

21.01.2022 So if you were wondering what a photographer does during a Pandemic, teach his kids about "drawing with light", or in Greek terms, "Photo Graphy". This is Spiral Light photography using some twine and a $3 pen light from Supercheap Auto. Super easy to do and great fun, even the 5 year got involved. For those budding photographers that want to try this from home, grab your DSLR, a tripod and a remote trigger. A stop watch or mobile phone is handy to keep the time. Position yo...ur camera low to the ground facing directly up with a wide angle lens, and tie your lens pen directly overhead at about 1m from your camera lens. Make sure you tie the cord to the very centre of the pen light above. Set your focus to manual, focus manually on the light pen when it's in position and light switched off. Next set your camera to manual mode, ISO set to 100, start with an aperture of f22 (or smallest possible aperture on your lens) with a shutter speed of 30 secs, then try it at 1, 1.5 and 2 minute exposures (You will need to set your shutter to BULB mode for anything greater than 30 secs). Experiment with the Aperture as well, but don't go beyond f11 depending on how bright your pen light is (The dimmer the better). Ensure you close the blinds, turn the lights off and darken the room as much as possible. Using black material to surround yourself helps, but not essential. Turn pen light on and try swinging the pen light in circles, ovals and linear. When you release the pen light wait a couple of oscillations before locking the shutter down to give it time to settle, otherwise the wobbling will cause a blurry effect. This is probably the hardest part of this photography. See more

20.01.2022 Day 4 of Pandemic Photography at home with the kids was Smoke Photography + the Harris Shutter Effect. Again all of these were straight from camera with no edit...ing, other than the Harris Shutter Effect images (coloured smoke). We blew out a small lit candle to capture the smoke rising with an off camera speed light flash at right angles. Then we burned some incense and placed items such as the kettle, a finger, hand, etc directly in front of the incense sticks. The Harris Shutter Effect is where you capture 3 different versions of the same image, layer them together in Photoshop and then split the individual RGB colour channels. Very cool effect.

19.01.2022 In this digital age of paperless everything, we too often neglect to print our most cherished memories. Have a read of this post from our weekend camping experience and then read the below quote. "Photography is a way of feeling, of touching, of loving. What you have caught on camera is captured forever... it remembers little things, long after you have forgotten everything" - Aaron Sussman ... We have a fantastic Christmas special this year. An on location family portrait and 11x14 (A3) mounted enlargement print for Only $49. Go to our website www.celebratephotography.com.au for details.

17.01.2022 Day 5 of Pandemic Photography at home with the kids was Custom Bokeh. The Aperture in our camera lenses are general round in shape, or very close to round depen...ding on how many aperture blades it has. Bokeh is defined as "the way the lens renders out of focus points of light. So when you shoot a subject with fairy lights out of focus in the background, you get those fuzzy round lights behind your subject which looks awesome. But what if our lens aperture was not round and actually the shape of various objects. Well that was our photography activity for the day. To make a custom shaped bokeh, you need to change the shape of the aperture on your lens. This is easily done by cutting out small objects on black cardboard just slightly larger than your lens diameter, placing the card over the front of the lens, opening your aperture right up to f2.8 if possible, and ensuring the lights in the background are well out of focus, i.e. focus on something in the foreground. The lens renders out-of-focus points of light and your background lights now appear as the shape cut out on your black cards. We just used the fairly lights on the back fence of our swimming pool and a flash to light up the subject. And no, the new custom shaped aperture card on the lens won’t affect how subjects in the foreground in focus look. Just changed the shape of the out of focus lights in background.

16.01.2022 Simply amazing. What an awesome doctor.

16.01.2022 Day 8 of Pandemic Photography at home with the kids was High Speed Photography. Grab a bow & arrow, some water filled balloons and a camera. We tried shutter sp...eeds of 1/2000sec, then 1/4000sec and 1/8000sec. Great fun either way, but the kids were more keen on shooting the arrow then shooting the camera. But at least I got all of them out for this one. See more

14.01.2022 Day 2 of Pandemic Photography at home with the kids. Today's lesson was Photoelasticty. Photoelasticity describes changes in the optical properties of a material under mechanical deformation. Basically transmitting plane polarized white light from a computer monitor (background). This beam of light has its direction of travel changed by turning a polarising filter on a camera lens, which turns light to dark. We had heaps of fun shooting clear plastic items such as plastic cut...lery, cups and then using a thin plastic sheet to make the background more interesting. I think they enjoyed crunching up the plastic sheet we stuck to the background computer monitor in various ways to create really cool images. Please note, none of these images have been photoshopped. They are straight from the camera, and the change from a white background to black, is simply a turn of the polariser filter on the camera lens. The kids spent hours with this really simple one to set up. No studio or expensive camera equipment required. Just a Polarising lens filter that you can pick up for as cheap as $20-$30 See more

13.01.2022 Day 9 of Pandemic Photography at home with the kids was Fruit Photography. Grab some fruit, slice it, dice it, chop it, or whatever you want with it, then throw... it in a bowl of water, or just take some close up macro shots. I found a small fish tank from Pet Barn for $5, used my flash from directly above. Then placed the fish tank on its side (minus the water), placed my flash below and some tracing paper on top of the glass to shot from above down using a macro lens. The sliced grape was my favourite. One is half a grape, the other is a thin grape sliced. See more

13.01.2022 Day 6 of Pandemic Photography at home with the kids was Abstract Photography using Oil & Water. Using a sheet of glass, colourful balls, colour paper, and some ...oil & water. Manual focus on the Oil & Water and experiment with various apertures. Just need a steady hand and plenty of paper towels and window cleaner. Again no photoshop, just have fun and experiment. 12.01.2022 No matter how beautiful the portrait, mums always seem reluctant to choose images of themselves with their children. Please read if you’re one of these mums.

12.01.2022 During these unprecedented and troubled times, we hope and pray that you and your loved ones will be safe and well. If you’re working from home or isolated for whatever reason, take the opportunity to spend that time with your family and loved ones. Take a selfie and post it up on our Facebook site. We’d love to see what everyone is up to whilst we get through this. As many have already said, We are in this together and together we will get through it. If there is something we can do to assist, whilst we are quiet, just let us know. We can only try. p.s. Don’t forget to support your local businesses that they too may survive this pandemic. Particularly once things settle down a bit.
