23.01.2022 Our penultimate award for 2020. From 2011/12 to 2018/19 there has been complete domination of the PNSW Female Paddler category by Australia's leading paddler an...d arguably the best slalom athlete on the globe. Eight time winner the remarkable Jessica Fox. 2020 is a year of change and we crown a new queen - PNSW Female Paddler of the Year NAOMI JOHNSON. Naomi had a huge 2019/20. Serious focus on training led to Naomi competing in 2019 as part of the Australian Team at the ICF Canoe Marathon World Championships in Shaoxing China where she paddled a double kayak with Windsor paddler Laura Lee competing against Olympic level female paddlers. A key local achievement was the 2019 Hawkesbury Canoe Classic seeing Naomi cross the finish line at Mooney Mooney just before 2:45am in an official time of 9hrs 28 mins 55 secs. In doing, so Naomi achieved a number of firsts:- i) Broke the existing HCC Women’s Open K1 record by almost half an hour. ii) Set the fastest EVER Womens time in the HCC’s 43 year history iii) Was the fastest finishing woman on the night iv) Was fourth fastest single boat on the night (male competitors in first three positions) v) Was fourth fastest on handicap for the night. Naomi whilst particularly pleased to have set this record is keen to see more female paddlers competing in the HCC and kayak racing generally. Before it's ultimate cancellation Naomi was instrumental in promotion and publicity for the 2020 HCC event. Her outstanding achievements in 2019/20 were recognised by Paddle Australia when Naomi was announced PA Open Female Marathon Paddler of the Year, and now leading female paddler in NSW & ACT can be added to the CV. Congratulations Naomi. Lane Cove River Kayakers PaddleNSW - Marathon Paddle Australia Hawkesbury Canoe Classic

19.01.2022 Race 6 27th September Hi Members and Friends, Windy day, and cool early, but warm sunshine later. In a return to form, Warwick was first home in a close finish with Greg and Sue, who recorded a PB! David also reveled in the testing conditions, to get within seven seconds of his best time! Cam managed a PB, and Aidan just kept out the fast finishing Andrew, who did exactly the same time as last race, despite the conditions. Though not his favorite distance, Clive finished s...trongly today. Rob, and John, did not let the conditions beat them either! Alan treated us to a rare sight these days, not seen on Wyong River for quite some time, by paddling a C1! We welcomed a New Member, Philip, who piloted the sleek Zulu OC1 in his debut race. His turn at the half-way mark was extraordinary! Sandy, who also usually paddles OC1, was pretty happy with her PB in the Fenn V8 Ski - a PB by 48 seconds! Congratulations all! "Thank you" to our Timekeepers, Diana and Margaret, who also had our Lucky Prizes drawn - won by Greg, Cam and Aidan. And thank you to all for continuing to observe the Covid 19 restrictions without complaint - so necessary to ensure our good health. The relaxed travel restrictions were appreciated! See you next race? Regards, Nick. [email protected] See more

18.01.2022 New Member, Philip Ward, OC1, in the Morison 50 on the Hawkesbury yesterday. Hunter Valley Paddlesports Club's Alan Pierson, C1, was there also! And , on Wyong River today, Rob McPherson gave Cam Mehmet a minute start in the Virtual 7.62km - Cam held him out!

17.01.2022 It’s not every day you happen to bump into a prospective trans-Tasman kayaker on the water, only once in a Blue Moon. Here’s some pictures of Richard in Cowan Waters (Hawkesbury River) returning from a four-day sea trial.

16.01.2022 In 2020 we received a single nomination from our affiliated clubs and paddlesports for a long service award. In 2018 we recognised five such stalwarts. The 2020... PNSW Long Service Award recipient is SHARON HUGHES of Northern Beaches Outrigger Canoe Club. Sharon is a Foundation Member of NBOCC, formed in 2000. In all those 20 years she has been Club Secretary, and also Women Coach for 18 years. Sharon was honoured with Life Membership in 2018. As a competitor Sharon has won many state, national and international titles including part of the 2005 Women’s Masters team that won the Molokai Outrigger World Championship. She is also a former record holder of the Hawkesbury Canoe Classic (Master Women’s Sea Kayak division). Congratulations Sharon and thanks for the wonderful service to our sport over numerous decades. 16.01.2022 Virtual 7.55km Series Hi Members and Friends, The Virtual Series continues to be well patronised, with most Members not missing a one! Mick has the best showing, with consistent improvement. John Wood also! Cam and Rob have been consistent, while Clive has been variable. Jim's times have shown slight decline, though unfavourable conditions are most likely responsible. I can offer no acceptable reason for my decline - well, none that I want to accept! I see PaddleNSW are condu...cting a Virtual Ultra Series, beginning with the "Wyong Marathon". You have about a week from later this week, to submit a "Time." Enter, by email, (with me) by Thursday, if you are from Central Coast or Lake Macquarie Council regions, for the actual 29.5km Wyong Marathon, on the beautiful Wyong River, starting at Lions Park, from 9:00am Sunday. Two Laps of the original 15km Course! (Well, just missing the "snaggy" bit at the top end!) Keep fit, and keep safe! Regards, Nick. ps. results - [email protected]

15.01.2022 Some silver linings from 2020...! Although it's been a year unlike others, as we close out the year it's important and positive that we reflect on some of the p...ositive things that 2020 brought us.. and recognise the efforts of many people who have made it all possible for us to enjoy doing what we love - paddling, outdoors, adventures and community. In February, Rob Law kindly delivered the new club website. We're sure you've all checked it out at www.rivercanoeclub.org.au If not, make sure to enjoy when you get a chance. The old website had served the club well but then with time, it needed a technology refresh/migration onto a new digital platform (wordpress) Thanks Rob for making this possible for everybody to enjoy. Just one of the many positive things that 2020 delivered, setting the club up for a great future and much paddling!

14.01.2022 Hunter Valley Paddlesports' Alan Pierson, C1, in the Morrison 50, on the Hawkesbury, yesterday.

12.01.2022 A close finish for second and third, after 29 kilometres!

10.01.2022 Hi Members and Friends, A complicated, and busy, "New Year" already, but I was privileged to witness a unique performance at this week's Virtual Race 8 on Wyong River! Intense friendly rivalry gave Cam the incentive to record a PB which was an amazing 55 seconds quicker than his previous best! Rob also did a Series PB in the dead heat, but did not equal his overall best of 42:36!... I had mixed feelings as they overtook me - then, lost sight of them as they rounded the last bend in the run home to the finish at Lions Park! "Virtual Racing" certainly gives the best of both worlds! Allowing paddlers who might otherwise be unable to participate, to compete, while retaining the opportunity for "head to head" contests! Often though, when paddling away from Wyong River, conditions are not as good, with sometimes open, tidal, or shallow, water to contend with, which makes for complicated handicapping! We have optimistically planned our Race Calendar for the year - hoping for the best! We hope that those who have suffered this past year, will have a better 2021! Happy Paddling! Regards, Nick. ps. Results - [email protected] and, attached, some of the "Toukley Paddlers" on Wyong River this Tuesday morning!

10.01.2022 Improving the health of the Tuggerah Lakes estuary has long been a priority of mine, because I know how important the lakes are to our community. 10.01.2022 From the young of age to the young at heart. Happy Father's Day to all our dads and grand-dads..... and a very special one for our 2020 PNSW Masters Paddler of ...the Year - ALLAN NEWHOUSE Allan really embodies the spirit of masters marathon paddling in NSW. Despite living on the South Coast, he is a regular at marathon races and in the 2019 series was one of only a handful of paddlers to achieve a 100% participation medal. He won his division (Div 12) in the series, lining up alongside much younger paddlers in the process, and while he clearly has a competitive edge is always adamant that the best bit about paddling is the community and camaraderie. He is an unmissable sight out on the water in his handcrafted wooden C1. If 2020 Marathon Nationals had taken place, he would have been the oldest NSW paddler at 74, yet was already drumming up friendly rivalry with interstate C1 paddlers up to 10 years younger than him! Congratulations Allan and we hope all the Dads are enjoying their day. Burley Griffin Canoe Club (BGCC) PaddleNSW - Marathon

10.01.2022 There are three awards remaining to be announced by PaddleNSW in 2020 - Female Paddler, Male Paddler and Coach of the Year. All incredibly worthy nominations. C...oaching first. The judging panel simply couldn't split the high quality and so for the first time in PNSW history we have two winners. Nominated by Sutherland Shire Canoe Club is 2020 PNSW Coach of the Year BOB TURNER. "Bob gives a significant amount of his time to develop many paddlers. He runs regular training sessions as well as working with individuals including giving stroke corrections when he paddles past us. He pays particular attention to developing our junior paddlers. Along with Kaye Laurendet, Bob runs the very popular SSCC time trials which helps us have fun on the water and improve our racing skills. Rain, hail or shine, Bob spends the early hours of Tuesday mornings working with paddlers of varying abilities and aspirations. Whilst some are focused on improving their racing performance, Bob’s primary goal is to improve our paddling so we can paddle injury free well into the future. When Bob goes on holidays he provides a coaching plan to keep the sessions going. Bob is encouraging some of our senior paddlers to progress into coaching. He holds special development sessions for these paddlers. His aim is to make sure they coach the same technique, so they don't confuse paddlers. Bob actively and responsibly communicated with paddlers during the COVID restrictions to keep us on the water and paddling safely. He had us training in small groups as soon as the guidelines permitted. Bob stood for hours in the cold on the bank of the Woronora River yelling drills and stroke corrections while we kept our distance out on the water." Congratulations Bob. Tune in tomorrow to discover the joint 2020 PNSW Coach of the Year winner. Sutherland Shire Canoe Club PaddleNSW - Marathon Paddle Australia Surf Ski Australia

10.01.2022 Hi Members and Friends, We made it to the last race in the weekly "Virtual" series, this year! No need to comment on the "year" - I believe everyone on the Coast has conducted themselves admirably! But, we will need to continue our "good habits" in the New Year!... Cam and Rob have made the most of the "Virtual Racing," by using the flexibility of the concept, but retaining the rivalry of racing each other! Congratulations, Rob - a Series PB - under less than ideal conditions! Please be careful this NYE! All the best for 2021. Regards, Nick. ps. I'm still learning to "drive" facebook, so if I have not acknowledged a message, etc, I apologise! If you need info, email at [email protected] n.

08.01.2022 We love a good before-and-after pic! As the weather warms up we’re sure a few of you will be out-and-about on the water. Did you know this year we completed... upgrade works at the Picnic Point Boat Ramp? The works have delivered improved infrastructure with a safer access to the river for our boaties! Another great community project delivered by Council, working in collaboration with the Picnic Point Management Committee. . . This project was proudly supported by the NSW Government, under the Boating Now Program.

08.01.2022 Let our rivers flow... naturally. Plans to dam the Mole River on the New England Tablelands will destroy a large section of this beautiful and ecologically impo...rtant river, plus impact on flows downstream in the Macintyre, Barwon and Darling-Baaka rivers - to the detriment of river health and paddling opportunities. The Mole River dam project is part of a number of new dams that are being proposed across the Murray-Darling Basin, threatening native fish, platypus and rakali, all of which require natural high and low flows, not regulated by dams. There are few unregulated major rivers left in the Murray-Darling Basin... The Mole River Protection Alliance is holding a day of fun and information on the Mole River - bring your kayak and a picnic lunch and see why the locals love their river and want to stop plans to dam it - Sunday 24th January. #NoNewDams

08.01.2022 CCP Race 5 13.9.20 Hi Members and Friends, A glorious Spring day! A slightly longer course now, as the Council water monitoring Buoy has been replaced, after repair, in an altered position. So, all PBs will have to start again!... However, it does appear that two Members have set a record speed for this approximate distance - Andrew Wilkinson and Rob McPherson - with Marg and Rob Cook very close to their best! Visiting BWP Member, Michael Day, had a close finish with Mick Carroll. A warm welcome to new Member, Sandy Hauraki! Sandy usually paddles Outrigger, but used her V8 Ski, for her first paddle with us! One of our "newer" Members recently purchased a new craft from a well known Hunter Valley manufacturer. Our Member was a bit surprised when the gentleman remarked that he was harshly treated by the handicapper when he last raced at Wyong - almost fifty years ago! He didn't add that he had an enviable reputation as a white water competitor and was handicapped on that ability! So, when another Hunter Valley Member presented for Race 5, the Handicapper was careful to not make the same mistake with Alan - especially as he was paddling a borrowed Ski - with only a few weeks experience - and having transitioned from C1 - (single blade paddling). Alan had correctly predicted that he could achieve about 10 kph, but was given a more favourable start time - to the Handicapper's embarrassment! Anyway, congratulations Alan - well done! Our weekly Virtual 7.5km races have been well attended, with the "Regulars" only missing the occasional race. Next Race - 27th September - see you there? Regards,Nick.

06.01.2022 A tough week having to close our business during the busiest week of the year Glad I have my MMP stubby cooler to get through this Northern Beaches lockdown I hope everyone is well

04.01.2022 Results Wyong Ultra Marathon 30th August 2020. Hi Members and Friends, We are grateful to be granted permission to hold our 46th "30km" Marathon, the first while observing Covid 19 conditions. Conditions were perfect for Competitors, Workers and Spectators.... Despite restrictions allowing only residents of Central Coast and Lake Macquarie to enter, thirteen Paddlers completed the Marathon, and five the half distance. I would like to thank our Timekeepers, Diana and Margaret, for their dedication, and "a job well done!" Also, the Lakes Surf Club Members, led by Sean Leister, who manned the four Safety Craft, and Tuggerah Lakes Marine Rescue who supplied two Safety Craft. There were two powered pleasure craft, who responded favourably to the request by SLSC, to "slow down," and caused no significant disruption to the contestants. There was one capsize however, by the K2 crew, for "no apparent reason," at the top turn, after successfully rounding the bottom turn, at the same time as a boat wash! A pretty courageous effort to complete the course after a dunking in the cold water! Let's hope next year's Marathon can be held under normal conditions, but it will require self discipline and observance of simple "rules!" Thank you to all who contributed to a successful day! Nick Naughton. Secretary, CCP. ps. some pics from the finish, plus a non-competitor, for the girls!

02.01.2022 We have seen many amazing athletes and wonderful volunteers recognised during the past few weeks as we've announced the 2020 PNSW Annual Award winners. The bril...liance continues as we close the chapter with our final award - 2020 PNSW Male Paddler of the Year DYLAN LITTLEHALES. Dylan is no stranger to our awards, winning the PNSW Adaptive Paddler trophy in each of the past four years. Some of Dylan's achievements in 2019/20 include: * GP1 made 500m B final in open 500m event (racing in his para boat) * GP2 made B final in open K1 200m (racing in para boat) * Won all para events over the year. * Nationals qualified for para Olympic team before the games committee changed selection criteria and made it that everyone needs to re qualify again next year. * Race at Nationals PB time in 200m looking to improve his performance at world level (currently 4th) Dylan is a marvellous ambassador for paddling at club, state and national level. PaddleNSW is extremely proud to ink Dylan's name alongside fellow sprinters Murray Stewart and Lachlan Tame who have dominated the category over the past decade. 02.01.2022 Next 2020 PNSW Award Winner - Event of the Year - MAKAI CUP The 2020 MAKAI Cup was awarded the honor of hosting the PA Australian Ocean Racing Championships, an...d the selection race for the 2020 Australian Team. In its 9th year, 2020 proved to be the events biggest and one of our most challenging. Not only ramping up logistics involved in hosting 200 competitors from all over Australia, MAKAI also had to deal with several weeks of devastating fires that ravaged the entire district including many club members losing property. Next on MAKAI’s list was an East Coast low pressure system that combined with an ex tropical cyclone from Queensland to produce the ‘perfect storm’ scenario that pounded the entire east coast from the Victorian border through to Queensland. The lead-up week ran like clockwork as we hosted many groups from Queensland, Tasmania, Perth and beyond to show them our unique waterways and coastline. Race day was horrendous! Massive seas, and gale force winds battered the coastline, however MAKAI adapted and were able to produce a lap event that proved to be an absolute brilliant spectacle for competitors, support, and spectators. The out and back course set partly within the Ulladulla Harbour proved the only safe and viable option in regard to competitor safety and well-being. Despite the conditions, the race was a huge success and is this year's PNSW Event of the Year. MAKAI Paddlers Surf Ski Australia Paddle Australia

01.01.2022 PaddleNSW is absolutely delighted to announce our next winner who is one of the most popular volunteers statewide and nationwide - 2020 PNSW Volunteer of the Ye...ar EILEEN CALLAGHAN. 01.01.2022 Wyong Ultra Marathon went ahead on Sunday in a limited local capacity only for Central Coast and Lake Maquarie paddlers due to C19 restrictions. 01.01.2022 30km Wyong Marathon update. Dear Potential Entrants, and those interested, This year's "30km Marathon" will be simplified due to NSW Govt. Covid 19 Restrictions.... Entries cannot be accepted from Paddlers outside the Central Coast and Lake Macquarie Council Areas. Recent Covid 19 Restrictions such as Physical Distancing and use of Sanitiser, (when appropriate - not before Paddling!) will continue. There will be no Briefing, or Awards, to avoid "mingling" etc. You should not attend and compete if you develop any "Covid 19 like" symptoms - you will be asked to leave the area, if signs are obvious, and advised to "be tested." As there will be significantly less Paddlers eligible, we have decided to have our "Headquarters" (Starter/Timekeepers, etc) at Lions Park, Panonia Road, Wyong. Consequently, Late Entries will be accepted to CCP email/Nick, until Saturday morning. As per the enclosed Maps, the Top Turn will be one yellow Buoy 1.6km Upstream, of the Start. The Bottom Turn will be the usual 11.35km "Red Channel Marker." Two Laps for 29.1km, one Lap for 14.55km. A short course, of approximately 7.65km will be available, if there are entrants, as the Council Buoy has recently been repositioned about 150m downstream of the Tacoma Fish Co-op. We have not had the chance to measure the distance, yet. Passing under the "Twin Bridges" - Paddlers will use the Northern Spans when travelling Upstream - the Southern, or right hand Span when travelling downstream Finish between the Blue Buoy and the Right Hand Shore/Timekeepers at Lions Park. There will be one Marine Rescue Safety Craft at Tacoma, (unless needed for an emergency), and another near the Wyong Bowling Club. There will be one SLSC Safety Craft at the Top Turn, and two more, strategically placed along the Course. Competitors are required to assist any Paddler in distress and/ or seek assistance if needed. Nick Naughton, Secretary, Central Coast Paddlers. [email protected]
