25.01.2022 Sometimes some very strange things block our sewers, which means dirty work clearing the pipes! Things like nappies, kitty litter, ear buds, baby wipes, goldfish, sanitary pads To help keep our sewer pipes clear, there’s only three things that should be flushed down the loo poo, pee and (toilet) paper. Not even so-called ‘flushable wipes’ and tissues should get the royal flush!... Thanks for helping by doing your bit not to clog the system! See more

22.01.2022 Attention Coasties: Make sure your bins are on the kerb the night before as collections will start earlier than normal over the festive season. If Santa’s gifts have caused some excess rubbish, remember to place all your wrapping paper, envelopes, cards, party hats, bon bons, biscuit tins, fruit mince pie trays and cardboard packaging in your yellow lidded bin. If you’re engaging in a little festive cheer - make sure those bottles and cans find a home inside your recycl...ing bin too! Cellophane and foil wraps CAN’T be recycled, they belong in your red lidded bin, as do ribbons, bows and twist ties. For more information on what can and can’t go in your household bin visit 1coast.com.au

21.01.2022 NSW Health update: New Year's Eve will look a little different this year. Instead of heading out, many of us will be settling in for the evening. Given the current situation on the Northern Beaches and increasing concern about transmission of COVID-19 in other parts of Greater Sydney (which includes Wollongong) new restrictions will be in place on New Year’s Eve. For New Year’s Eve in Greater Sydney (including Wollongong, Central Coast and Blue Mountains) the following will a...pply; - Household gatherings will be limited to 5 visitors (including children). - The limit for outdoor gatherings will be reduced from 50 to 30. These changes come into effect from midnight tonight (Wednesday 30 December) and will be in place until further notice. People are encouraged to limit non-essential gatherings over the New Year period where possible to further minimise the risk of transmission in the community. -- Stay up-to-date on the latest information about COVID, including local testing clinics, at NSW Health https://preview.nsw.gov.au/covid-19

20.01.2022 Are all weeds created equal?...not quite. Weeds can be a polarising topic for our community - for every weed that one person says is invasive, another will counter that it has medicinal properties. Lantana might drive you mad, while others will recognise its habitat value. There are many factors that have to be taken into account when determining what weeds are listed for requiring control and which don’t. Instead of a blanket rule, the NSW Government use a ‘weed risk assess...ment’ to determine priority weeds. A weed risk assessment is a scientific tool asks a rang of questions to understand the potential impact of the weed. These include: what is its distribution? is it poisonous? is it causing environmental, economic or health problems does it have positive attributes? in what ways does it spread? how much will control cost? (both initially and long-term). Once the assessment is completed, it will give a recommendation ranging from monitor the weed through to eradication. Catching new weeds early and stopping them before they become widespread is a big focus - the return on investment can be substantial both in a monetary sense, but also from an environmental sense. To see the current designated priority weeds for our area visit NSW DPI Biosecurity’s Weed Wise page https://hubs.la/H0BS58G0 #weedswednesday

15.01.2022 The final countdown to Christmas is on, but we have some community members #SummerSwaps to share that you could also use for birthdays and other celebrations all year round. **** The Floral Case... If you’re like me and a little weary of heading to Sydney markets this week. Some of our local fruit stores are stocking the most amazing bulk buys of flowers!! Aren’t the colours stunning!! I made this arrangement up using local Christmas bush, purple bachelor buttons and spruce from #freskofruit Kincumber and then added some fresh Eucalyptus from a friend’s backyard. What floral arrangements will be on your Christmas table this year? #summerswaps #keepitlocal #christmasflowers *** @theycallmemum This year we’re using the bark of our grand lemon eucalyptus tree as gift tags on our presents - and oh-my-gosh I love it! The girls and I were inspired while cleaning up some of her yearly shed from the deck one day and have been collecting pieces ever since. Flick through the pics to see her from top to bottom, she’s magnificent! We’re using all the bits and pieces of wrapping paper we have left over from last years and of course recycled gift bags for wrapping this year. Looking for more sustainable options next year, but I can assure you the gift tags will be back! #SummerSwaps #sustainablechristmas #lemoneucalyptus #theycallmemum #theycallmemuuum
