15.01.2022 PATIENT OF THE WEEK This weeks patient of the weeek is BUDDHA. Buddha was a very brave boy for his desexing and cherry eye surgery. Cherry eye is a common term for prolapse of the third eyelid gland. The third eyelid gland is responsible for about half of the eyes tear production so without it animals will develop dry eye which is irritating and can lead to infection or even vision impairment! The cause of it isnt know but brachycephelic breeds like bulldogs are more suspectible to developing cherry eye. Thankfully Dr Corin repositioned the gland and hes now resting up at home after plenty of attention and cuddles with the nurses! Keep an eye out for his "after" photo, coming soon!

12.01.2022 PARALYSIS TICKS ARE OUT AND ABOUT Paralysis ticks affect an estimated 20,000 pets every year. When it first attaches it is very small and can go unnoticed for a couple days while it feeds and injects paralysing toxins into the bloodstream. Timing is vital in these cases as often by the time symptoms start to develop, the tick has been attached for a few days. Prevention is the best cure! Make sure that your pet is up to date with tick prevention (e.g. Bravecto, Bravect...o Plus, Nexgard, Nexgard Spectra). Due to our warmer climate we see paralysis ticks all year round so ensure that you use tick prevention products throughout the entire year. Even if your pet is "inside only" it is important that they are protected as well as ticks can still find their way into your home by hitchhiking on your clothes and shoes! Signs of tick paralysis include: - coughing and/or gagging - breathing difficulties - vomiting - changes to vocal sounds - wobbly legs (particularly the back legs) or inability to stand - loss of appetite If you notice any of these symptoms please call us immediately

He was very nervous for his procedure, but we did our best to help settle his nerves. This included; Spraying some Adaptil calming spray on a towel for him to lay on when he arrived Giving him some sedation before putting his catheter in, so he felt calm and relaxed for this part of his procedure Getting him to come into the clinic a bit later in the d...ay, so he wasn't waiting for too long before his procedure Cuddles! Her owner found her with the toad and brought her down to us where we wiped all the toxins out of her mouth and monitored her condition. Good news! She didn't develop any other symptoms and after a brief hospital stay, she got to go home with a clean bill of health! ... Cane toads secrete a toxin that is poisonous to dogs, an adult toad has enough to kill a dog in 15 minutes! If you think your dog has licked or mouthed a cane toad, gently and thoroughly wipe their gums, tongue and mouth with a wet cloth for 10-15 minutes, rinsing the cloth in between wipes, and call your vet for medical advice and treatment. Obsessive licking Red, irritated skin Shaking their head or scratching ears Hairloss Watery, red eyes Redness inside the ears The most commonly affected areas are the paws and ears. Itchy skin is not only irritating but constant scratching can lead to secondary infections! What you can do to help ease the itchiness: Regular baths (try a soothing shampoo such as Aloveen or Nutriderm) Wash their bedding and vaccuum their regular spots Transition to a special diet that helps with environmental allergens (e.g. Hill's Derm Defense) Wash their paws after being outside and leave your own shoes outside to avoid bringing allergens into the home Book a consult with one of our vets to discuss allergy medications

04.01.2022 Meet sweet Nobe, a Muscovy duck belonging to our hydrobather Aubri. Nobe was brought in with puncture wounds to her head and neck after her flock were attacked by a predator. She was treated for shock, her wounds cleaned and flushed, had some good pain relief and a course of antibiotics. Aubri has been a great nurse to Nobe, and we are happy to report she has made a full recovery!
