We want to keep you and your pets smiling for longer .

11.01.2022 GRASS SEEDS AND YOUR DOG!! Dog owners please be vigilant for grass seeds! These commonly affect longer coated dogs but can be seen in all dogs exposed to grass seeds. Usual sites for grass seeds are feet, eyes, ears, mouth, noses but can also been seen elsewhere on the body. They are extremely uncomfortable and can be a source of potential fatal septicaemia. Generally early intervention is most successful at avoiding complications and ongoing treatment.

10.01.2022 CLINIC UPDATE Some of you may already be aware but we are pleased to say that we are transitioning back to having our clients in the building as well as reintroducing our after hours service!! We can’t thank our lovely clients enough for their understanding during what has been a difficult few months. Remember this is a transition period, meaning things are not yet back to normal so we still ask for patience as our staff adjust to these new changes. ... Key Points: All clients will still be required to remain in the vehicle and call upon arrival. The front gates will be closed during our busiest times (ie first up in the mornings) but will then open after. Some consulting may still occur from the safety of your car. You may be invited to bring your pet into the clinic by the attending veterinarian but you do not have too. There are strict limits on the number of persons in the consult rooms/waiting area/reception. Please use the hand sanitiser provided upon entry. Follow the yellow social distancing stickers of the floor. Continue to practice good hand and sneeze/cough hygiene. Cashless payment is preferred however we now accept all methods. For all after hours emergencies please call the clinic on 4092 2311, listen to the message provided and then leave your details so that a veterinarian can return your call. If you don’t leave a message they will not call you back. And remember, if you are unwell or have any flu-like symptoms, please respect our staff’s health and safety by not entering the building. If you have any questions or concerns about the above update, don’t hesitate to get in touch with our friendly team. We are looking forward to seeing everyone again, at a safe distance of course!! Cats social distancing!!

05.01.2022 FLEA ALLERGY DERMATITIS (FAD) IN YOUR PETS . Flea bites can cause more complicated skin conditions such as flea allergy dermatitis (FAD). Bites from just ONE flea can be enough to trigger intense itching in a pet with FAD. Your vet may diagnose FAD even if fleas or flea dirt (flea faeces) aren't visible. Pets with FAD can damage their skin by constantly scratching, biting or licking, which can lead to secondary infections. Fleas can lay between 40-50 eggs every day, and ...once they've infested your home it can take months to get rid of them. In some cases, they can even transfer to humans, so it's not just your poor dog or cat that will be itchy and uncomfortable! A preventative flea treatment for dogs and cats is the easiest and most convenient way to break the flea life cycle and remove the risk of infestation. Here at Central Vets we offer a wide variety of flea and tick control for cats and dogs of all sized, age and breeds. Call in to our clinic and discuss the newer generation flea treatments we have available. See more

05.01.2022 Don't forget to head on down and see Dr Cassie, Dr Hanah and Nurse Tegan at the Sausage Sizzle fundraiser for the Mareeba Animal Refuge.

04.01.2022 PLEASE BE PREPARED FOR THE HOT TEMPERATURES IN THE NEXT FEW DAYS.

04.01.2022 What are the most common worms in dogs? --> ROUNDWORMS: these are zoonotic worms - they can be passed on to humans - especially children. The eggs can survive in the environment for years. Symptoms include: vomiting, diarrhoea, pot-belly and colic. Very common in puppies. --> HOOKWORMS: Most dangerous of intestinal worms. They burrow into the pet's intestinal wall and suck blood to survive. Symptoms include: enteritis, diarrhoea, dehydration, anaemia and even DEATH. These are... zoonotic also and can affect humans by the larvae burrowing under the skin (see picture) --> WHIPWORMS: live in the lower bowel of pets. Symptoms include: pain, diarrhoea and weight loss. --> HYDATID TAPEWORMS: Found in areas where sheep, kangaroos or wild pigs are in contact with dogs. Dogs become infected when they eat the hydatid cysts from infected intermediate hosts (i.e. kangaroo, sheep, etc). Serious risk of humans also if we swallow the eggs from a dog's coat. --> COMMON FLEA TAPEWORM: Larvae develop in fleas. Not a major health risk, however causes itching when the dogs rub their backsides on the ground. Intestinal worming schedule: Puppies are the most at-risk age group and need to be wormed every 2 weeks from 2 weeks of age therefore this means worming at 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 & 12 weeks of age. From 12 weeks of age we recommend worming monthly until 6 months of age. The pictures outline the LIFE CYCLE of the two major worms - Roundworms and Hookworms. Make sure your dog is up to date with worming prevention! For more information or to come in and worm your dog call the clinic today! See more
