14.01.2022 I have been asked by a number of people lately , what I am looking for when judging the WE side step . Ultimately we are looking for the horse to be in a half ...pass position. The horse should be bent in the direction of travel with the shoulders slightly leading . I am looking for the horse to melt to a walk, perform a fluid turn onto the pole ( no stopping before the side step ) . The horse should show clear crossing of both the forelegs and hind legs maintaining a lovely flow across the pole . The transition on departure should be crisp and uphill . In saying this , I believe it is to high a degree of difficulty for young or lower level horses to execute the side step in the half pass position. We need to remember half pass is quite a high level dressage movement. I ride my young horses slightly flexed away from the direction of travel, this facilitates ease of shoulder movement. If we initially make the exercise to difficult for the greener horses they will become tense and tighten through the body, this is not good training. Remember our levels are building blocks on the way to masters level. Up to and including elementary, I will give quite a high score for horses that are slightly flexed away from the direction of travel and have a good approach, show harmony , fluidity and clear crossing of their legs . I have noticed many horses stop before the side step , this will lower the marks somewhat . At a recent comp every horse managed to negotiate the poles, but only three had clear crossing of their legs . We need to train our partners to have a good mentality and elasticity when it comes to the side step. Remember to have crisp balanced transitions on approach and departure to set yourselves up for the ultimate score of ten. Remember a ten is excellent not perfect! See more

13.01.2022 My Working Equitation Journey by Riley Gordon Working Equitation is something that not only challenges the horse and rider but builds a strong trust and bond. It allows both (horse and rider) to feel a true sense of achievement and joy. I started Working Equitation when I was 14 and there was no better feeling than doing the obstacles, like the gate for the first time on Woody or cantering for the first time on Folie July this year.... In Working Equitation, you don’t need a trophy or ribbon to feel like you have won but simply the joy of succeeding and achieving your goal. Central Vic Working Equitation Club allows you and your horse to grow and change as it offers you new challenges every rally. I never thought that I would be able to do garracha dancing on Woody but by the end of the day we were both surprised that we did it with ease and had fun while doing it. My new horse Folie, and I went to our first rally together and she did better than I ever thought, she attempted most obstacles very well and by the end we were both a lot more confident. I hadn’t realised how much we were both relying on each other to guide one another through each obstacle strengthening our trust, bond and friendship. If I were to describe my journey in Working Equitation in four words it would be fun, exciting, uplifting and grateful. By Riley Gordon

09.01.2022 AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL WORKING EQUITATION LTD PARTICIPANT RULEBOOK - AUGUST 2019 The Dressage Phase Dressage is the first phase of the competition. Dressage encourages harmony between horse and rider through their understanding of the language of the aids. Humane and correct training of the horse is encouraged and promoted.... Dressage promotes physical soundness and mental well-being through relaxation, lateral suppleness (bending), longitudinal suppleness (roundness) and progressive conditioning. 13.1 Guidelines 13.1.1 The Dressage arena must be a 20 x 40 metre area clearly marked as the competition arena. 13.1.2 It is not required to close the entrance to the dressage arena. If closed it must be closed for all riders in a class/test. 13.1.3 Spectators must be at least 5 metres from the competition arena. 13.1.4 The rider will enter the arena when signalled by either a bell, car horn or whistle. 13.1.5 Riders are not required to start their Dressage test before their scheduled time. 13.1.6 A caller is allowed with a five point penalty. 13.2 Eliminations for Dressage (See also General Eliminations) 13.2.1 Resistance of more than 10 seconds 13.2.2 More than two errors of course (EOC). 13.3 Errors of Course/Test for Dressage (See also General Errors) An error or failure to perform an element of the Dressage test does not immediately eliminate the competitor. It is not always necessary to ring the bell for an EOC/Test. The Chief Judge will decide whether to ring the bell. In deciding not to ring the bell the Chief Judge must be aware of the effect of one movement on the next and where mirror images occur and should be prompt in notifying the competitor. The Chief Judge makes the final decision on how many errors occurred. If the Judges have not noted an error, the competitor has the benefit of the doubt. First error of course = 5 point deduction. Second error of course = 5 point deduction Total = 10 points. Third error of course = e See more

09.01.2022 Our first experience ever learning how to work with cattle up at Oxley with Andrew Simms. He is an amazing all round Working Equitation instructor. I was terrified of the cattle, my pony was good for his first time and Andrew’s instructing made me feel like a champion. I was hooked, from then on.

09.01.2022 October 2020 Write up by Wendy It was a beautiful day for our first ridden rally since the last lock down. Following regulations rider numbers were limited but those who attended thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The format was a practice day where riders got the chance to try out all the obstacles with the help of our wonderful rally coordinator, learning about the accuracy of riding each section. We all had a chance to try the bell corridor, slalom, bridge, barrels, gate and Garrocha with various degrees of success! We welcomed some lovely new members and caught up with current ones in a lovely relaxed atmosphere. Hopefully now we will be able to continue our rallies and enjoy our beautiful grounds.
