Learning through play, experimentation, classroom practice and social interaction, children begin to make sense of their world and their place within it. A team of researchers led by Menzies School of Health Research have found that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children in the Northern Territory are missing out on the important early years of schooling due to hearing loss. Find out more about this world first study via our blog!

14.01.2022 "My film is for all Aboriginal kids. It is about our dreams, our hopes and our rights. I hope you think of me when you are telling the Australian Government how to treat us better." ~ Dujuan. Powerful words from Dujuans speech to the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva calling for the age of criminality in Australia to be raised from 10 to 14 years. This article shines a light on the inequities Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander kids face in accessing an education.

13.01.2022 Professor Amanda Leach delivered the World Hearing Day Menzies Seminar, providing a timely reminder that Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander children continue to share a disproportionate burden of ear disease. During an 18 year period (2000 - 2018) only 10% of Aboriginal children living in remote NT communities had normal healthy ears. The World Health Organisation states that 4% is a public health emergency. #WorldHearingDay

13.01.2022 Important findings released today from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, in partnership with Dr Scott Avery from Western Sydney University show that under-reporting of hearing impairment is a substantial issue for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 7 years and above across Australia participated in the voluntary hearing test as part of the 201819 National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Surv...ey. The independent hearing test found that at least 4 out of 10 people tested had a hearing impairment on the day of testing, but 79% of those found to have an impairment did not report having long-term hearing loss. The survey also found that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adults with a moderate to profound hearing impairment experience greater inequality in educational, employment and health outcomes compared to those with no hearing impairment.
