18.01.2022 Aaaaand we’re still going! With so many obstacles, it’s a wonder we get any practice in at all.... Last two.... Obstacle 8: Alabdhabhumikatva: Missing the Point, Lack of Perserverance, Being unable to Gain Ground, Disappointment. This is biggie. Many of us have a strong desire to achieve - a certain pose, a stage in life, success in our careers, happiness, the perfect family. Correctness. Perfection. But the things we want aren’t always easily attainable, and without fortit...ude in the face of challenge, it can be tempting to lose resolve and change directions as soon as the going gets tough. Maybe we achieve one thing, but something else eludes us. Or then, it’s the next thing. Or too many things. To gain ground seems like a never-ending journey...there is constant striving. But we’re ‘missing the point’- Life IS constant striving. First we have to establish a solid foundation at each level, only then we can move on. There is no end to this journey, of working, living, practicing, figuring things out, until, well..... Everyone wants to (be) on top of the mountain, but all the happiness and growth occurs while you’re climbing it -Andy Rooney Let’s climb the mountain together! #yogasutrasunday #patanjalisyogasutras #perserverance #climbingmountains #overcomingobstacles #growth #yogabowden #yogaadelaide #centredground

17.01.2022 Your Body is Amazing & Wonderously Capable. . So often we focus on what's 'wrong' with our bodies & on what we can't do. We push it to it's limits with our ego, even if we know it's not good for us. . Only when there is pain or limitation are we so acutely aware of that one part of ourselves and might take action to care for our bodies. Then as soon as the pain goes, the restriction eased, how quickly we forget and go back to old habits.... . Don't take for granted the magic of these vessels that carry us around day to day and allow us to connect, to embrace, to move, to experience each other and the world. . Be patient. Be kind. Listen. Learn to approach your body with love, intrigue and affection. . . . . #bksiyengar #loveyourbody #yogabowden #yogaadelaide #bowdenphysio #centredground See more

15.01.2022 In the obvious sense of this yama it’s almost a ‘no-brainer’. On face value it seems the easiest to interpret and apply. But delve a little deeper, there is SO MUCH HERE. . This yama encompasses compassion and empathy toward others, all creatures, nature AND ourselves. Doing no harm. . It can be challenging to fight our natural instincts to protect our own interests. So often we might act out of fear. Think about a time you've been frustrated, lost patience, been fearful or d...isappointed by another persons actions. What was your response? How did you react? What impact might that had on the other person? . It can also be challenging to fight our love for convenience and things. But what impact does that have on our environment, on other creatures? . And what about self harm or violence toward yourself? When we choose to push ourselves in a pose when we know it's not right, or there is pain, or it's more than we can take right at that moment [This, I see so often in class!]. Or speak with harsh words or thoughts about ourselves- our appearance, our bodies, failure to meet our own high expectations or achieve some particular goal. . In yoga, we take a step back and learn to investigate, to act on true reality, and know that all our lives are inextricably linked. Then we can act more out of love for each other and for ourselves. . Could you be a little more gentle? Could you have more compassion? More empathy? . Be Kind. Particularly with Your Own Self. . . . . . #yogasutrasaturday #patanjalisyogasutras #yogasutras #noharm #ahimsa #bekind #selflove #yogabowden #yogaadelaide #centredground See more

15.01.2022 Practice is a metaphor for life: what you can let go of, what you have to contain and hold on to, what you’ve got to challenge and what you’ve got to be humble to - @CarolineCoggins #SeniorteacherseriesIYA . So many gems of wisdom from this gentle soul. I’m so grateful to listen to the stories and be able to learn from our most senior teachers. Thanks @iyengar.yoga.australia ! . To me yoga is self-learning, the journey inwards & yet also outwards. Life is Yoga. And it all t...akes time- it takes time to learn the poses, to work through the layers and to fully understand. It takes time to notice the subtleties and move beyond the physical. . Becoming oneself takes time... (we each have our) own process of growing and learning. (This) practice is the most real thing that you turn up for. . . . . . #iyengaryoga #yogacommunity #seniorteacherseriesIYA #learningyoga #selflearning #yogaadelaide #yogabowden #centredground See more

14.01.2022 Yoga Sutra Sunday: YS 1.30 continued.. . Obstacle 6: Avirati: Indiscipline of the Senses, Lack of Detachment, Moderation or Control Everything is good in moderation. Such a simple statement, but oh so hard to maintain in practice. When something feels good, naturally we want more and we’ll seek to experience that feeling over and over again. But too much of a good thing can become a bad thing.... Take Netflix or our phones for example- I don't know about you, but I seem no longer capable of watching just one episode or looking up that one thing I needed to find in my phone: I binge on whole seasons at a time or scroll endlessly for hours- sometimes forgoing sleep and other basic needs. At the other extreme there’s those of us who are so obsessive that we recoil in horror at a teaspoon of added sugar or a gram of gluten. If we’re bored and feeling dull and sluggish, motivation is hard to muster. On the other hand, if we’re overwhelmed or suffering an emotional crisis, our brain is flooded with stress hormones- we can’t think straight, can't plan or learn and our immune and nervous systems become compromised. But when we’re actively engaged with somethinga little nervous, a little excitedwe reach a happy medium. Optimal levels of adrenaline and cortisol boost our concentration and performance; these hormones protect your body. We are optimally aroused, we’re in flow and everything is juuust right. This is Yoga- a perfect balance between stimulation and relaxation. A means to explore that balance and find the centre ground. To separate ourselves from attachment, listen to & recognise what our senses need as opposed to want. A practice that can be energising, challenging or restorative and calm. That's the 'Zen'. Come and find it ;) #yogasutrasunday #patanjalisyogasutras #moderation #detachment #overcomingobstacles #yogabowden #yogaadelaide #centredground

14.01.2022 Movement Monday: A Pre-Menstrual Sequence After ovulation our energy levels and capacity may change. We can become more sluggish. Each of us is different- some may hardly even notice any changes, while others will experience a gamut of symptoms both physical and mental.... Bloating, weight gain, heaviness, headaches, backaches, irritability, forgetfulness, mood swings, food cravings and the list goes on. Progesterone and estrogen levels begin to drop, and now we lose elasticity in our tissues. There is also an increased tendency toward inflammation in the body. So at this time we need to keep our ego in check & take care not to overstretch as this could result in tissue damage ( tendon injuries). As we develop awareness of our own bodies response to the phases of our cycle, we can start to recognise when poses feel good for us or go against the flow of our energy at that time. For me, I experience mental overwhelm, nervousness, backache, headaches, bloating, sore breasts & fatigue. This is a practice to address these symptoms, plus a few more. For our #endowarriors or those with fibroids or cysts, practice the standing poses toward the wall to keep the abdomen soft. If you have specific symptoms not covered or would like some advice on helpful poses/sequences, feel free to send us a DM or come and see us at the centre. #womenshealth #selfcare #womenswellness #menstrualcycle #endowarriors #endoawareness #premenstrualsequence #inversions #restorativeyoga #yogabowden #yogaadelaide #centredground

11.01.2022 When we hit a hurdle in lifewhether it’s battling challenges at work, in relationships or dragging your feet to get on your yoga mat, meditation cushion, or do those exercises that your Physio prescribed (oh I know!) we can often trace the source back to one or more of these Antarayas | Obstacles. Here is the last of the 9 Obstacles and thankfully the sutras go on to explain ways to overcome them! Obstacle 9: Anavasthitatvani: Inability to Maintain Progress, Concentration... and Steadiness once gained. Along our journeys, invariably, something will come along to interrupt us, unsettle us- illness, injury, life events. Then momentum, concentration, steadiness can be lost. Much like the previous obstacle, when something gets in the way of our progress or consistent practice, we often let go of everything, instead of being able to meet things where they stand. Progress is lost, we drop back and that same ground must be covered again. At the same time, just when we think we’ve reached a goal, mastered something, the goal post shifts and there is a new endeavour. We're always playing at the edges of our capacity. At these times we must practice patience and perseverance. Can we find the calm in the noise, the trouble and the hard work? Can we remain steadfast? Life means to be living. Problems will always be there. When they arise navigate through them with Yoga- don’t take a break - BKS Iyengar #yogasutrasunday #patanjalisyogasutras #overcomingobstacles #steadfast #yogabowden #yogaadelaide #centredground

08.01.2022 Truth. Satya. Perfect truthfulness in thought, word and deed. To live with genuine honesty, without deviation between actions, thoughts and speech (BKS, pp 146 Core of YS). . Could you say that you are 100% truthful in all that you do? No ‘white lies’ or ‘altered’ impressions, no abuse or obscenity, telling tales or ridiculing that which is held sacred. These apparently insignificant misgivings are so easy to make without much thought. . If we ARE being honest, let's face i...t.... complete and utter honesty in everything we do is challenging. It's incredibly hard for us to be completely truthful in every thought, every action, every word, not only with others, but sometimes even more so with ourselves. . We can be such short sighted thinkers that often what seems easier to lie or give false impression from the start, often leads to more damage and disharmony within ourselves in the long run. However, If we work hard at telling the truth, everyone else begins to be honest with us too (Roach & McNally). . Though it can be scary, how could you practice more truthfulness in your day to day? . . . . . #yogasutrasaturday #patanjalisyogasutras #yogasutras #philosophy #satya #truthfulness #honesthumans #yogabowden #yogaadelaide #centredground See more

07.01.2022 Obstacle 7: Bhrantidarsana: False Knowledge; Distorted Perception; Illusion; Confusion Things are not always as they seem- Phaedrus Everything we hear is an opinion, not a fact. Everything we see is a perspective, not the truth- Marcus Aurelius... We view the world through a lens of our own experiences and perception of what is truly happening. And often we can get caught up in our emotions, rather than seeing things for what and as they are. A fight between where we are; where we want to be or where we think we should be. A difference between knowledge & understanding. How many examples of this can you think of throughout history- for sure the earth is flat... what springs to your mind? {let me know below!} And for sure, there are more happening right now- we all have our own beliefs about what is happening with this pesky virus and the decisions that are being made, but who REALLY knows where that actual truth lies? Yoga is a journey of discovering truth. When I first began my yoga journey, it was simply exercise, stretching, movements of the body. Then it became learning- knowledge of the body gained through experience- I discovered conflicts between my learned knowledge of the body through my physio studies and my experiences in yoga. These various ‘parts’ of the body which, of course, don’t exist in parts, but a whole, with each part working together synchronistically. Then it became making shapes, moulding my body to fit the description. But then I discovered the misconceptions between what I think I SHOULD be doing in a pose, what I think I AM doing in a pose and the reality of what is actually happening. I discovered the organic and energetic aspect of our bodies and that the pose had to fit me, my body. And it wasn’t until much much later in my journey, when I suffered with anxiety, that I perceived and acknowledged the emotional, mental and spiritual aspect of yoga. Yoga and Meditation allows us to peel back the viewing screen and discover the truth underneath. Come and discover your truth. #yogasutrasunday #patanjalisyogasutras #illusions #discoveryourtruth #overcomingobstacles #yogabowden #yogaadelaide #centredground

01.01.2022 Utthita Trikonasana | Extended Triangle Pose. . A staple pose in most yoga sequences- I would practice this almost daily. You’d think it would become rote or uninteresting. And yet, look at that intense focus- my mind is in the edge of my foot, the front of my thighs, my back waist, my abdomen, front and back of my chest, my bottom arm, my top arm, the crown of my head. . It’s never a ‘casual’ pose. Never uninteresting. There is so much to be found- every single time is diffe...rent. Maybe it’s a different time of day, or there is stiffness from some other activity the day before, maybe the mind is a little bit scatty... . Generally Trikonasana strengthens the legs, improves flexibility in the hamstrings, ITB, increases hip mobility, relieves tension in the lower back & further along the spine. Energetically it brings warmth & grounding. . Practice - play with the distance of your feet, how low you take the arm, take the feet on different planes to each other, practice with a foot to the wall or your back to the wall... . What other variations can you think of? . . . . . #trikonasana #yogasana #asana #spotlighton #bowdensa #yogabowden #bowdenyoga #physiobowden #bowdenphysio #yogaadelaide #physioyoga #centredground See more
