25.01.2022 CEPU Tasmania member Bevan Anderson and his wife Kim have been helping lead a community campaign against the Robins Island private wind farm being built on their doorstep. Thursday night locals turned out in force and agreement that the only winners out of a private project like this are rich multinational investors. State Secretary Mick Anderson spoke (15min mark) about the perils of private energy generation and did some myth-busting of the jobs and investment furphy sold t...o local communities. As we’ve learnt from all around Australia, private investors in the essential service of energy generation want to drive down employment costs for higher profit, with the exploitation of workers being a business model. Publically owned generation in tassie is the only way forward where communities like the north-west benefit. 22.01.2022 Not letting the executives have all the fun, Australia Post workers had a laugh yesterday treating themselves to flash new watches! The joke that Post workers aren’t laughing at is a real pay cut (less than CPI) they copped for all their hard work of keeping the essential Post service going through the pandemic. End the corporatisation of Australia Post, punt the board and return it to full public service.

22.01.2022 25th November Is The International Day For Elimination Of Violence Against Women The CEPU condemns all violence against women. Violence and harassment can happen anywhere, including at work.... The ILO Convention 190 is an international convention that recognises that domestic violence can affect employment and health and safety. It states that governments, as well as employers’ and workers’ organizations can help to recognize, respond to and address the impacts of domestic violence. It also recognises the role that collective bargaining, at all levels, can play to mitigate the impact of domestic violence in the world of work. We want the Australian government to ratify this convention. Prior to the pandemic, domestic violence against women was already alarmingly high, with nearly 30 per cent of women worldwide affected by this form of violence according to the WHO. With COVID-19, an increased reporting of domestic violence has surfaced, with a staggering 40 per cent rise in some countries. Domestic violence is not a private issue, it is a structural and societal issue. Although domestic violence starts in the home, it can also impact the world of work. Speak up if you see violence against women. Everyone has the right to feel safe

17.01.2022 "With respect, the debate of if you are 'for coal' or 'against coal' and talking about the transition like it is some kind of conceptual future possibility is seen by our members as a self-indulgent diversion from the fact that they are losing their traditional stable and secure jobs at an ever increasing pace right now," said ETU - The Electrical Trades Union Secretary Allen Hicks. We share the same concerns as other unions about workers losing their jobs but the party's response should be about improving jobs in the renewables sector and supporting fossil-fuel workers through the transition with dignity.

15.01.2022 This Asbestos Awareness Week, 23 29 November 2020, CEPU Tasmania is reminding tradies to be asbestos aware because it lurks in more places than you’d think. Work health and safety (WHS) laws prohibit work involving asbestos apart from in specific circumstances where you are required to follow strict safety rules.... The law may also prevent you from removing asbestos yourself, and if you are allowed, you must follow strict safety precautions and use the right Personal Protective Equipment. Commercial and public buildings built before a certain date are required to have an asbestos register but that’s not the case for homes, even though they are often workplaces too. Where might asbestos be in a home? You can find out here www.asbestossafety.gov.au/find-out-about-asbe/asbestos-home Asbestos becomes dangerous once the fibres are disturbed, become airborne and then inhaled. This can happen if you’re sanding, drilling, cutting or sawing asbestos. Asbestos is a known carcinogen and inhaling asbestos fibres can cause a number of life-threatening diseases including pleural disease, asbestosis, mesothelioma and lung cancer. Don't risk the possible health effects of asbestos exposure. The World Health Organization says there is no known safe level of exposure to asbestos fibres. Watch this video about asbestos exposure in the workplace here. https://vimeo.com/446982099
