25.01.2022 MVA training tonight for our weekly get together. We had our newest members on the tools tonight, getting used to how the equipment works. The weight, performance and limitations of each tool will determine the decision on which to use in a particular scenario. There was a lot learnt regarding stabilisation and performance of the STABFAST system. When we arrive on scene, it’s also important that all volunteers know how to turn on the PTO ( power take off) to run pumps and ...lights etc on the truck, this was also demonstrated tonight. Well done to the appointed team leaders, and a big round of applause to the newest members for not being afraid of jumping in and having a go, that’s what training and learning is all about. #vrarescue NSW Volunteer Rescue Association Inc. 23.01.2022 At approximately 1415 this afternoon our squad was activated to a motor vehicle collision at Laguna. A motor cyclist had lost control and gone down an embankment. NSW Police Force, NSW Ambulance , Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopters and Laguna Rural Fire Service were also activated to the scene. Working alongside these other amazing crews, it was soon established the rider had suffered relatively minor injuries. The helicopter was stood down, but the patient was still tr...ansported by road Ambulance to hospital for further assessment, while our team and the remaining services assisted with traffic control whilst our 4wd was used to winch the motorcycle back to the road. #vrarescue NSW Volunteer Rescue Association Inc. 23.01.2022 A busy 24 hour period for our volunteers with 4 activations. 1) 25/10/20 at approximately 1700 we were activated to a motor vehicle collision at Heddon Greta. As volunteers arrived at base they were stood down as it was confirmed no persons were trapped. 2) 25/10/20 at approximately 2250 we were activated to assist NSW Ambulance on the outskirts of Wollombi with a patient who had fallen down some steep, slippery terrain on his way home. ... When our volunteers arrived, the male had been assisted out by NSW Police Force and was being treated and transported by NSW Ambulance to hospital for further assessment. 3) 26/10/20 at approximately 1220 this afternoon our squad was activated to a motor vehicle collision in Cessnock. Arriving on scene is was confirmed no persons were trapped. Our volunteers stayed on scene for a short while and assisted NSW Fire and Rescue with removing small branches to reduce the chance of further damage being caused to an awning. 4) 26/10/20 at approximately 1450 we were activated to assist NSW Ambulance with an elderly patient at Abermain who had fallen over in the shower. The restriction of movement due to the confined space made it difficult to manoeuvre the lady into a position to be lifted in a safe and gentle manner. To make the extrication less difficult, the glass sections of the shower screen were removed to enable our volunteers to work alongside NSW Ambulance personnel and implement lifting slings to raise the lady from the shower/ bath. With a great team effort, she was manoeuvred safely and smoothly onto a stretcher and taken to the awaiting ambulance for further assessment. #vrarescue NSW Volunteer Rescue Association Inc.

22.01.2022 When our squad is activated to assist our community, our volunteers leap into action. Sometimes we don’t know how long it will be before we return home. This means often we don’t get to eat dinner with our loved ones, kiss our family goodnight, cuddle up with our pets on the lounge, and this can be hard some times on our volunteers and their families. So it appears sometimes they will sabotage us so we cannot leave.

21.01.2022 During sustained periods of wet weather, one of the key safety messages is simple: don’t drive through floodwaters. Doing so will likely severely damage your vehicle and could also put your life at risk. The temptation is understandable it’s been a tough drive and you’re within minutes of the comforts of home when you’re confronted with what looks like a relatively shallow and steady flow of water across the road. As the SES will tell you, still waters can run deep and the ...flow in front of you could pack a punch of a tonne per metric metre, which can tear away the road surface and result in a much deeper gully than is apparent. A typical car will lose power in depths greater than 15cm as water enters the exhaust and washes into the air intake, causing it to float once flood levels exceed 30cm. Modern cars with electrically powered windows and locks are almost impossible to escape from once water finds its way into wiring and motors, disabling switchgear and pressing on bodywork. Owners of off-road vehicles shouldn’t assume they are immune, as the fast-flowing force can overcome four-wheel drive or any other tool at their disposal. Even if you have the good fortune to survive getting caught in a flood in your car, the damage your vehicle will certainly suffer will make you regret taking the chance.

21.01.2022 The aftermath of the storm cell that ripped through the lower Hunter yesterday evening was in full view this morning once daylight arrived. Our team was asked to assist our good friends at NSW SES with the clean up in the Cessnock LGA, our dedicated volunteers gladly obliged. Well done to everyone involved, not just in our local area, but all over the Hunter and surrounds for their efforts. #vrarescue NSW Volunteer Rescue Association Inc.... 20.01.2022 A couple of animal rescues over the past 24 hours. This afternoon our volunteers were called to assist with retrieving some fury felines from underneath a house. 2 adult cats and 3 kittens were under a house in Cessnock. Our volunteers crawled under the premises which saw the adult cats relocate under their own steam, whilst the kittens needed to be assisted. At the end of the process, all cats were cleared from under the house and all seemed to be unharmed. ... Yesterday our squad was called to assist with relocating a diamond python from inside a chicken coop at Black Hill primary school. The reptile managed to find a nice hiding spot underneath the ridge capping of the coop. Once the capping was removed, the reptile was relocated to local bush land unharmed. After speaking to the principal, it was decided that no disciplinary action was to be taken against the reptile. Another top effort by our volunteers. #vrarescue

19.01.2022 At approximately 1000 this morning our squad was called to Cessnock Hospital to assist with removing a ring from a female patient. Our manual ring cutter was used cut through the gold to enable the ring to be removed. It was instant comfort for the woman once it was cut and she let out a sigh of relief. She did very well as the finger was very sore. #vrarescue

18.01.2022 In Flanders Fields This poem by John McRae is written from the perspective of dead soldiers lying in their graves. In Flanders fields the poppies blow... Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below.

18.01.2022 Our squad has been involved with a couple of animals over the past week. A red-bellied black snake was relocated from the back yard of one of own volunteers. The reptile had been seen on numerous occasions, it was not posing a threat to anyone but had made shelter in some rocky ground in a park where children and dogs frequently attend. One of our qualified handlers relocated the reptile into nearby bush land. We were also asked to assist with rescuing a cat from inside a... chimney. The feline was unsure of its new surroundings and found itself trying out for a new position with Santa Claus. After being persuaded to a point where it could be reached, it was removed from the chimney and materials put in place to stop it happening again. Another top job by our volunteers. #vrarescue NSW Volunteer Rescue Association Inc. See more

17.01.2022 Today our squad was called to Heddon Greta to relocate a snake slithering around in a residential back yard. The reptile, which is a type of non venomous snake not usually found in this area has more than likely escaped from captivity. It is currently in the care of one of our contacts and will be hopefully returned to where it did the Houdini from.

16.01.2022 At approximately 14:35 this afternoon our squad was activated to assist NSW Ambulance at a residential property in Nulkaba. The paramedic team had searched to find an entry point to the premises but to no avail. Our team were getting tools ready to enter when the next door neighbour said she knew the code for the lock box at the front door. They had recently had discussions with their elderly neighbour about this exact situation and the information was exchanged. This is a... great idea, please have discussions with you neighbours about family contacts or gaining access in the case of an emergency. Once entry was gained, the paramedics and our volunteers were confronted with the elderly woman lying injured on the floor. Whilst they assessed her injuries, our recent interagency training came into effect, and our volunteers offered to obtain their stretcher and other equipment from their vehicle for them, which they gladly accepted. With all of the required equipment inside , we assisted the medical team with rolling the casualty onto a lift blanket, followed by a short lift onto the stretcher. She was then loaded into the ambulance where further assessments were carried out and she was then transported to hospital. Another case of great teamwork on scene. #vrarescue NSW Volunteer Rescue Association Inc. See more

14.01.2022 Just prior to 1700 this afternoon our squad was activated to assist NSW Ambulance with the extricating an elderly male who had fallen down a concrete culvert and injured himself. Working alongside NSW Ambulance and Fire and Rescue NSW 254 Station Cessnock personnel we worked together to remove the man from his predicament. Whilst the ambulance staff treated the man for his injuries, our volunteers worked in combination with the Fire + Rescue crew to prepare the stokes litte...r and ladder to prepare to perform a ladder slide to lift the man out. He was placed on a spine board to make it easier to lift him into the stokes. Once lifted inside, he was secured into the stretcher before slowly being slid up the ladder to the safety of the ambulance stretcher, where further assessments could be performed. The whole process was made a little more difficult due to the slipperiness of the drain the man found himself in. The man was transported by ambulance to hospital for further treatment. A great display of emergency agencies working together to achieve the one goal. #vrarescue NSW Volunteer Rescue Association Inc. See more

13.01.2022 During the end of year BBQ, we had a few presentations to make. Both Doug Styles and Nathan Price received their 2019 Bushfire Citations, as well as a long service award to Bill Calderwood. We were also invited to the NSW SES - Cessnock City Unit base last week for a BBQ, and this week we returned the deed. We have been working very closely with this team for a long time and it was great to get together in less stressful situations and socialise, before they went and tarped more roofs. thank you for your invitation, and accepting ours. Congratulations to our volunteers for their awards, well don’t to you all.

Both reptiles were relocated unharmed into local bush land. NSW Volunteer Rescue Association Inc.... #vrarescue See more

11.01.2022 At approximately 2300 last night our squad was contacted to assist with a child that had locked themselves inside a house in Kurri Kurri. The mother of the three-year-old went outside for a short moment, as she went to re-enter she noticed that the door was locked. It seemed the child had locked the door and then put themselves to bed. Our volunteers assisted and gained entry to the house without causing any damage and mum and child were reunited. #vrarescue NSW Volunteer Rescue Association Inc.

11.01.2022 A short slow motion release video of this educated little yellow faced whip snake, that was relocated from a school today.

08.01.2022 This week our squad held and end of year BBQ where we invite the families of our volunteers to come and celebrate Christmas with us. Without our families support we would not be able to do what we do. It was a great evening, we even had a visit from the man in the big red suit. We also had a Christmas raffle with the prizes donated by local businesses. We would like to thank the following businessman’s persons for their donations for the raffle. ... 07.01.2022 At approximately 0715 this morning, our squad was activated to a residential property in Abermain where a toddler had managed to lock themselves in a car. Arriving on scene, the child was pretty calm considering the situation and it was relatively cool, so there was no need to urgently break the glass to get her out. Our volunteers had time to utilise our small hand held air bags which open the door far enough to be able to insert a thin metal rod with a hook on the end, th...is enables us to lift the electrical lock button and open the door. 04.01.2022 This week our squad held its bi-monthly general meeting. During this meeting we are given the operational and non-operational statistics for our squad over the two previous months. The operational statistics for the jobs we have attended are as follows. September ... 4 x motor vehicle collision 9 x animal rescue October 3 x motor vehicle collision 11 x animal rescue 4 x assist ambulance 2 x domestic rescue.

01.01.2022 Whenever we post a picture of a motor vehicle collision we have attended, we try to take the picture so that the vehicle has no distinct features in the shot so that it reduces the chance of the vehicle being recognised. We do not post them as a way of gaining or chasing praise for what we do. There are 2 main reasons we post pictures of the collisions we attend... 1) if showing these pictures changes the driving behaviour of just one person and saves their life, then it has been worth it. 2) to show people in the community who make donations to our squad, what the tools they help provide can do, how we use these tools to free someone from a collision and how we go about doing it. Please take the images we post and use them for good. Take care on our roads and hopefully we never meet by accident. #vrarescue
