17.01.2022 Everyone in Victoria who lives near dense forest, bush, grassland or the coast needs to prepare their property for bushfire. Below are some tips from Captain Koala on preparing your property: Roof gutters - Keep gutters and roof areas clear of leaf litter. Leaf litter in guttering is a ember ignition point. Keep grass short - Keep grass cut to less than 10cm. Fire can ignite and travel quickly through long grass. Mowing and slashing can greatly reduce fine fuel levels.... Leaves and Twigs - Get rid of dry grass, leaves, twigs and loose bark. Less fuel = less fire. Prune shrubs -Prune lower branches of shrubs to separate from surface fuels underneath. Prune shrubs well away from branches of mature trees. Cut back branches - Cut back overhanging tree branches close to property no branches in 10m space. For more information on preparing your property please see here: https://www.cfa.vic.gov.au/plan-prepare #CKDoesSummerPreparation #LessFuelEqualsLessFire #PlanAndPrepare #CleanUpBeforeABushfireDoes

07.01.2022 Last summer one of our CFA Strike Teams saved the life of a NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service firefighter on a remote fireground in NSW. For over an hour, Strike Team 1304 (8th rotation) crews performed CPR and used AED’s (defibrillators) to save their colleagues life. All this occurred on the side of a remote mountain whilst the crews were surrounded by fire and smoke. It was a super human effort by our crews that day and what’s even more amazing, our NSW colleague wa...s up and talking on national TV just a few days later!! One of the members of the NSW crew that was there that day, sent us the below photo to let CFA know that NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service has now put AED’s in all their Fire Response vehicles as a result of what happened. It was a great outcome to save a life, and a great outcome to see our northern firefighting family is a little safer now! CFA want to remind you - only 1 in 10 Australians survive a cardiac arrest! We can all help improve survival rates by knowing how to perform CPR and use an AED. Please take a moment to watch the following Ambulance Victoria video, it could save a life: https://youtu.be/oH7KciZ3UAQ BTW: Some of the AED’s used by our CFA crews to save that life in NSW, were paid for using donations from the public. So, if you’ve ever dropped a coin in a CFA tin or donated to your local CFA, THANK YOU! #ProudToBeCFA #LearnCPR #LearnToUseAEDs
