24.01.2022 This week is NAIDOC week. NAIDOC Week celebrates and highlights the rich and diverse cultures of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, the First Australians. NAIDOC Week celebrations and community events are a great opportunity for all Australians to come together and acknowledge the histories, cultures, customs and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People. This years NAIDOC theme is always was, always will be. Always Was, Always Will Be , ackno...wledges our nation’s story that began at the dawn of time long before documented contact from European settlers. NAIDOC 2020 invites all Australians to embrace and acknowledge the true history of this country a history which dates back thousands of generations. The very first footprints on this continent were those belonging to First Nations peoples who have maintained an ongoing spiritual and cultural connection to the land and sea. The Indigenous Australian Culture is the oldest known Culture on the Planet. All Australians need to celebrate and embrace the fact that we have the world’s oldest oral stories and that our First Peoples engraved the world’s first maps, made the first paintings of ceremonies, invented unique technologies and engineered structures that predate well-known ancient sites such as the Egyptian pyramids or Stonehenge. What an amazing history. Always was and always will be.
24.01.2022 This week is National Child Protection Week. This year National Child Protection Week will celebrate its 30th year with the theme of Putting children first Putting children first was front of mind when the National Child Protection Week campaign was launched in 1990, with the aim of bringing abuse and neglect out of the shadows and putting child wellbeing on the national agenda.Since then, the need to put children first has been recognised time and time again as an impor...tant pillar for boosting the wellbeing of all children in Australia. Last years National Child Protection Week campaign was based on research that shows the importance of putting children first when talking about parenting, and continued the message that conversations are a key part of engaging the whole community in caring for children. This year may not see a massive opportunity for Community Events but each and every one of us can take an opportunity this week to think about our children and the Children in our Community. Are they being put first? Are we putting our own children first? Life may get hectic, particulary in these trying times but its important as adults we take the time to put into perpective how we prioritise our lives and whether our children and the children around us are coming first. Lets all stop and set things right. All that adulting stuff can surely wait a bit longer. What does putting children first? Putting children first means prioritising the safety and wellbeing of children. To grow up well children need to feel safe and loved, have a chance to play and explore, have a say in decisions that affect them, and access to essential things like food, shelter and healthcare. For children to thrive we need to come together as a community and put childrens needs first not just during National Child Protection Week but each and every day.

23.01.2022 Today is International Mens day. International Men’s Day encourages men to teach the boys in their lives the values, character and responsibilities of being a m...an. Mahatma Gandhi said, We must become the change we seek. It is only when we all, both men and women, lead by example that we will create a fair and safe society which allows everyone the opportunity to prosper. You might also like to use this day as an opportunity to thank some men who are positive male role models in your community.

22.01.2022 Perinatal, antenatal and postnatal depression what’s the difference? You might hear some of these different terms used and wonder what they all mean. Antenatal depression is when you experience depression during pregnancy, and affects up to one in ten women in Australia. Up to one in six women experience postnatal depression, which develops between one month and up to one year after the birth. Because depression can start before or during pregnancy and continue after childbirth, we often use perinatal depression to cover the whole period from conception until your baby is 12 months old. Depression may also return in a following pregnancy or after the birth of another child.

20.01.2022 Today some of the staff members from CFSS WA LTD attended The Womens Health and Wellbeing DivaZ Day. This was an event for all women in our community. CFSS WA LTD created a banner in which everyone was encouraged to put their hand prints on it in paint. These hand prints represent solidarity and support for women and families affected by Domestic Violence. Thanks to Sophia Nelson for coming up with this idea and thanks to all staff who attended and assisted with this event today.
20.01.2022 A new hand signal is being used by domestic violence victims to alert their friends to the fact that they could be in danger! ... While a women is talking to her friends on video chat and a man can be in the back ground. The women can hold up her hand, with her palm facing the camera l, tucks her thumb to her palm and fold all four fingers over it. It’s a safe way for domestic violence victims to reach out to others in a non verbal way. #blackdotcampaign #whiteribbonday #someoneyouknowneedshelp #speakout

19.01.2022 An early warning signs poem, written by an 8 year old who was feeling unsafe at School. Pounding Heart Goose Bumps Dry Mouth... Tight Lump Blurred Vision Cant See Wide Eyes Need a Wee Frozen Limbs Fluttering Tum Sweaty Palms Squelchy Bum Jelly Legs Cant Move Feel Sick Wheres the Loo Muddled Thoughts Hair on End Fight or Flight? I Need a friend. Its important for Children to know what their early warning signs are and what they should do when they get them. They are our bodies automatic, natural response to an unsafe situation and if they get them they need to talk with an adult. Lets educate our children to safety

17.01.2022 Today is National R U OK Day. Its our national day of action when we remind Australians that every day is the day to ask, Are you OK? if someone in your world is struggling with lifes ups and downs. 2020 has been a challenging year for everyone and circumstances have made it even more important for us all to stay connected and, for those who are able, be willing to support those around us. If you feel like somethings not quite the same with someone you know theres something going on in their life or you notice a change in what theyre saying or doing - trust that gut instinct and take the time to ask them Are you OK? If someone says theyre not OK, make time to listen, encourage action and check in. That conversation could change, or even save, their life.

16.01.2022 I got flowers today. It wasn't my birthday or any other special day. We had our first argument last night. He said a lot of cruel things that really hurt me. I ...know he was sorry and didn't mean the things he said. Because I got flowers today. I got flowers today. It wasn't our anniversary or any other special day. Last night, he threw me into a wall and started to choke me. It seemed like a nightmare. I couldn't believe it was real. I woke up this morning sore and bruised all over. I know he must be sorry Because he sent me flowers today. I got flowers today. It wasn't Mother's Day or any other special day. Last night, he beat me up again. And it was much worse than all other times. If I leave him, what will I do? How will I take care of my kids? What about money? I'm afraid of him and scared to leave. But I know he must be sorry Because he sent me flowers today. I got flowers today. Today was a very special day. It was the day of my funeral. Last night he finally killed me. He beat me to death. If only I had gathered enough courage and strength to leave him, I would not have gotten flowers today. This poem is dedicated to all the victims and survivors of Domestic Violence. You ask, why didn't she leave? I ask, why did he hit? #JusticeForEmeraly #IHaveAStoryToTell #StopDomesticViolence

14.01.2022 This week is Postnatal Depression Awareness Week which is now be known as Perinatal Depression and Anxiety Awareness Week. This change reflects the importance of recognising and supporting parents’ mental health right through the perinatal period (during pregnancy and after birth). Antenatal anxiety and depression are strong risk factors in developing postnatal anxiety and depression. Early treatment during pregnancy can reduce these risks. We need to consider a parent’s well...being across this entire continuum, rather than viewing these periods as separate. Perinatal Depression and Anxiety Awareness Week was started 15 years ago in a bid to raise awareness about perinatal anxiety and depression, including what signs to look for and where to go to seek support. In this most unusual and difficult year we firmly believe that 2020 Perinatal Depression and Anxiety Awareness Week it is more important now more than ever. Thats why the theme of this week in 2020 is tell someone who cares. What does this mean? It means that with many expecting and new parents struggling due to COVID-19 and associated restrictions, it’s critical that we work together to support families facing mental health challenges at this time. It’s vital that expecting and new parents who are struggling know they’re not alone and can reach out for help. And just as importantly, they can know that when they do reach out, they will be supported by those they confide in, whether family members, health professionals, PANDA or other perinatal mental health specialists. 13.01.2022 Hi All, We are seeking an expression of interest in another free online Parents Protective Behaviours session. We would like to offer a morning and an evening session as I know some people are busy in the evenings or vice versa. This will be subject to numbers. For those who are unsure of what Protective Behaviours is; it is a life skills program for children that aims to educate and empower. It teaches children about their rights, how they may feel if they are feeling uns...afe, what to do if they are feeling unsafe, who they can talk to if they are feeling unsafe, body awareness and personal space. Parents who attend the training session can learn about the program and discover ways that they can talk to their children about Protective Behaviours, as well as talk with other parents to gain further insight and ideas. This is available for anyone in any location as it is done online via Zoom. Please, if you are interested send us a message on Facebook or you can email [email protected] Thank you and have a lovely day.

11.01.2022 Day 2 of #16DaysofActivism Destroyers, today is Day 2 of the Centre for Women’s Global Leadership’s 16 Days of Activism against Gender-B...ased Violence. This year’s international theme is Orange the World: Fund, Respond, Prevent, Collect!’ Today sees publication of the UK Femicide Census report, produced by Karen Ingala Smith and Clarissa O’Callaghan, which analyses 1,425 killings of women and girls, from the age of 14 to 100, at the hands of men, over a 10-year period, 2009-2018. As reported by Yvonne Roberts for the Observer, it seems impossible for activists to communicate the extent of the killings: People say, ‘It’s only a few women a week that die’, Gemma Aitchison says. But it’s been a few women a week ever since I was born, and I’m 34. It’s a huge systemic problem. The census says these women matter. https://tinyurl.com/y4up5k7t Here in Australia, Destroy The Joint was very aware that women’s deaths - ‘just domestic’ deaths, deaths of sex workers, transwomen, Indigenous women, or women with disability - did not ‘count’ for much in Australian society to politicians, police or the media. The political, legal and media response to coward punch deaths as compared with the silence surrounding deaths due to violence against women (VAW) indicated which members of our society ‘count’ as most valuable. Destroy The Joint has been Counting Dead Women since August 2013, after initial discussions with Ingala Smith in UK. We now maintain registers which honour all known women dead due to VAW in Australia since January 2012. By researching and registering the names of women victims of VAW, we aim to make the deaths ‘count’, and to bring about social and legal reform to eliminate VAW. By adopting a stringent set of criteria for our count, we show that development of a national database is possible despite the vagaries of a federal system. We are very careful to add to our Registers only when charges are laid, or there is sufficient known detail to define the death as being due to targetted violence against women. Our count differs from the UK census in counting only adult women i.e. those over 18 unless they are living independently of their parents or guardians. We adopt an extended definition of Family Violence to accommodate Australian social and cultural conditions, most specifically Indigenous and other non-Anglo cultures which have complex extended family relationships. We are also informed by the United Nations Declaration on the Elimination of Violence Against Women (1993), which encompasses violence occurring within the general community or in institutions. We include VAW committed by women against women: such crimes reflect the lateral violence (also called horizontal violence, internalised misogyny) generated among women by patriarchal oppression. The UK Femicide Census identifies that each death is treated by various agencies as an isolated incident and giving no cause for wider public concern. It concludes with a series of recommendations, including the thorough collection of sex-desegregated data. Our Counting Dead Women Australia campaign calls on federal, state and territory governments to establish and fully fund a standardised national database and nationally integrated death review boards to gain a better understanding of the circumstances surrounding violence against women and improve systemic responses. You can access our Annual Registers here: https://tinyurl.com/y6ew3a8f Destroyers, we have taken up the challenge to ‘Respond, Prevent, Collect’ but we desperately need help to ‘Fund’ our research. Increasingly, the local and national reporting we rely on is locked behind paywalls. Can you help us take action to eliminate Violence against Women? Every donation helps our researchers to access the reputable, timely reports they rely on. Donations, however small, are welcome and can be made via this paypal link: https://tinyurl.com/y678ttmj Or direct deposit to: BSB 032-249 Account number: 316752 (Destroy The Joint). ====================== - If you or someone you know is impacted by sexual assault, domestic or family violence, call 1800RESPECT on 1800 737 732 or visit https://www.1800respect.org.au/ - For information about local services download the free Daisy App https://www.1800respect.org.au/daisy/ - Accessible information and support is available via the free Sunny App which has been developed for and by women with disability https://www.1800respect.org.au/sunny/ - For Aboriginal Family Domestic Violence Hotline, call 1800 019 123 - For legal information, visit the Family Violence Law Help website: https://familyviolencelaw.gov.au ** In an emergency, call 000.

10.01.2022 Today is National sorry day. Some of you may ask, what is National sorry day or why do we have National sorry day. National Sorry Day is an Australia-wide observance held on May 26 each year. This day gives people the chance to come together and share the steps towards healing for the Stolen Generations, their families and communities. Its a chance for us to learn, reflect and understand the impact, that the Stolen Generations had on Indigenous People and the continued impact it has on Indigenous People today. Its a chance for us to move forward towards reconciliation and healing across our country.
10.01.2022 This little pre primary star, updated her network at home all by herself! A Network is a list of people kids choose that they can talk with, about anything, no matter what. Doing our Network hand is an important part of The Protective Behaviours Program that CFSS WA provide. Someone on her old network had left town so we needed to update. Its important to keep our networks up to date as things change, and people who were once easily available to our little ones may not be so... available anymore. Understanding also that she is still learning to write but after discussion, she knows what she has written and thats all that matters,as it is her Network. Encourage discussion around our childrens Network. Its a great way for kids to acknowledge just how many adults they have in their lives that care for them. Well done! This is a wonderful Network. 10.01.2022 Theme One: Protective Behaviours. We all have the right to feel safe all of the time. A simple concept for an adult but not quite so simple for a child. We all means WE All, EVERYONE. Not all kids know this. They may think that if they or someone else has done something naughty their right to feel safe is void. Of course this is not the case and its important kids know that this is a right they are born with that cannot and shouldn't be taken away from them. Its not OK for a...nyone to make another person feel unsafe for any reason at all regardless of who they are, where they are from or what they have done. If anyone makes them feel unsafe they must: STOP THINK TALK WITH AN ADULT Lets empower our children and ensure they are capable of standing up for their rights.
